Exira-EHK pushes away from Boyer Valley in 2nd half

Sports

February 14th, 2019 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans were able to take over the game in the second half and defeat the Boyer Valley Bulldogs 59-43 on Thursday night in Elk Horn. The Spartans only led by a point at the end of the first quarter but got the lead to 12 by half. The lead stayed near the 10 point margin for most of the second half but the Bulldogs did climb within 6 at one point of the third quarter. The Spartans took full control early in the fourth quarter to advance on in the postseason.

Senior point guard Cole Burmeister had a nice night for the Spartans, dropping in 20 points to lead all-scorers in the contest. After the game Burmeister said the Spartans did a better job of trying to push the ball of the floor against the resistance from the Bulldogs.

The Spartans improved to 20-2 on the season and will now face the Audubon Wheelers in the Class 1A District 15 Semifinals next Tuesday night. Burmeister said the Wheelers will be a tough challenge.

Boyer Valley finishes their season with a record of 10-12. Lucas Berens was a force inside for the Bulldogs, finishing with 17 points.

We’ll have coverage of that Exira-EHK vs. Audubon game on Tuesday night. That game will be the second half of the Semifinal doubleheader at 8:00pm. The first game of the night will feature the AHSTW Vikings against the Ar-We-Va Rockets and we’ll have that game as well, set for a 6:30pm start.

Audubon beats scrappy Logan-Magnolia team 51-44

Sports

February 14th, 2019 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers fended off a scrappy Logan-Magnolia squad to come away with a Class 1A District 15 Quarterfinal win 51-44. The Wheelers held a lead from the mid point of the second quarter through the end of the game but the Panthers kept within striking distance throughout. Logan-Magnolia led 15-12 at the end of the first and Audubon rallied for a 4 point edge by halftime. The Wheelers made it a 7 point lead by the end of the third and Logan-Magnolia got within three points with :30 left in the game. Audubon senior Tate Killeen came up big at the free throw line, hitting back to back one-and-bonus opportunities to seal the win.

After the game Killeen talked about heading to the free throw line in that big late game moment.

Audubon Head Coach Colleman Mullenix thought the Wheelers did a much better job with ball movement on offense in the second half.

Killeen led all-scorers in the game with 18 points. Kaiden Smith and Lane Lawson both finished with 12 for the Wheelers who improve to 16-6 on the season. Audubon advances to the Class 1A District 15 Semifinals and will face the Exira-EHK Spartans next Tuesday night at 8:00pm back in Elk Horn.

Logan-Magnolia was led by 12 points from Matt Soetmelk. The Panthers finish the season with a record of 11-10.

Accident in front of Creston High School – 1 hurt

News

February 14th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

A chain-reaction collision in front of the Creston High School this (Thursday) morning, resulted in injuries to a female juvenile. Creston Police report a 2009 Ford pickup driven by 75-year old David Wayne Mullin, of Afton, was traveling west on W. Townline Street at around 7:42-a.m., and was following to close to a 2017 Chrysler van driven by 31-year old Sarah Lynn Stephens, of Creston . The pickup struck the van at a high rate of speed. The impact caused the van to strike a 2009 KIA, driven by 36-year old Christopher WAyne Wiltermood, of Creston.

The KIA then ran into a 2002 Chevy S-10 pickup, driven by 16-year old Keagan Lee Trembly, of Creston. His pickup then ran into a 2008 Chevy Equinox driven by 20-year old Hannah Paige Thompson, of Prescott. An airbag in the van deployed, but a juvenile in the vehicle – who was not wearing a seat belt – hit her head on the front window. She also suffered from a cut to her lip. Stephens, the driver of the van, complained of leg pain. No other injuries were reported.

Creston Police cited Mullin for Following too close. Damage from the collisions amounted to $27,500.
