  • Creston 188, Atlantic 210 (Medalist: Rylie Driskell, Creston 41) (Atlantic Scores: Alyssa Ginther 41, Baylee Newell 45, Hannah Alff 61, Anna Weiser 63, Belle Wickman 67. From Coach Kathy Hobson: “Alyssa’s 2nd and 3rd shots on first hole were very atypical of her but she played well after that. Baylee was consistent with some good shots into the green. We had to take some penalty shots for lost balls and balls in the lake. And we weren’t focused on our individual games like we should have been. I look for that to improve as we practice and play more. To be competitive in our conference and meet our goals the entire lineup has to focus and when we do have those shots we don’t plan on shake them off and go on.”

Iowa’s Gustafson is AP women’s college hoops player of year

Sports

April 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Megan Gustafson of Iowa is The Associated Press women’s college basketball player of the year. She led the nation in scoring for the second consecutive year and is the first player from the school and the Big Ten to win the award.

The 6-foot-3 star received 15 votes Thursday from the 28-member national media panel that selects the weekly AP rankings. Balloting was done before the NCAA Tournament.

Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon received seven votes while Napheesa Collier of UConn three. Asia Durr of Louisville had two votes and Teaira McCowan of Mississippi State one.

Gustafson averaged 27.9 points and helped the Hawkeyes reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1993. She became only the fourth Division I player to score more than 1,000 points in a season. She tied the NCAA record for double-doubles in a season with 33.

Senate Republicans kill governor’s felon vote bill

News

April 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Senate panel has failed to pass a constitutional amendment to restore voting rights for felons, killing one of Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’s priorities for this year. In a statement, Reynolds expressed disappointment but said she remains committed to changing the law.

The House voted 95-2 last week to approve the resolution. It must be approved by the Senate and passed again by the Legislature in 2021 or 2022 before it would go to the voters.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Brad Zaun pulled the measure from the Thursday afternoon committee agenda, saying he didn’t have votes among his own Republican caucus. Some want to require total repayment of restitution and exclusion of those convicted of murder, rape, or child molestation.

Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen says it’s shameful that Zaun and other Republicans killed one of Reynolds’ priorities. People convicted of felonies now have voting rights revoked unless restored by the governor. Only Iowa and Kentucky have such strict requirements.
