KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dee Gordon got three hits and drove in two runs as the high-scoring Seattle Mariners extended baseball’s best record with a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The Mariners improved to 11-2 and have scored at least five runs in 12 of those games. The Royals lost their eighth in a row. Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 30 games, tying a Royals record set by George Brett in 1980.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Whit Merrifield has extended his hitting streak to 30 games, matching the Kansas City Royals’ team record set by George Brett in 1980. Merrifield led off the bottom of the first inning with an opposite-field triple to right against Seattle. Merrifield ended last season with a hit in 20 straight games, and has gotten a hit in all 10 Royals games this year. The major league record is a 56-game hitting streak by Joe DiMaggio in 1941.

UNDATED (AP) — The Iowa Hawkeyes have a long pipeline to the pros for tight ends and this year they have a pair of prospects expected to be first-round selections in the NFL draft. T.J. Hockenson is the reigning Mackey Award winner as the nation’s top tight end. His teammate Noah Fant says the two of them have a friendly but fierce competition going to see who will be the first tight end taken in the draft.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina drove in three runs, Paul Goldschmidt homered and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0, overcoming an embarrassing play by Marcell Ozuna. St. Louis already had a 4-0 lead when Kiké Hernández led off the eighth with a drive to left. Ozuna went back and climbed up the wall, but he misjudged the ball and tumbled onto the warning track as he tried to make the play. Hernandez’s drive bounced over for a ground-rule double, but the Cardinals escaped the threat.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 10-day injured list with a strained left groin. The same injury sidelined Ryu for more than half of last season, but he said Monday night that this injury did not feel as serious. Ryu left with two outs in the second inning of a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Dave Roberts said Ryu did not undergo an MRI and that Ryu “did feel a little better” on Tuesday.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CDT

GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) — Young voters, many of whom reside in delegate-rich areas of the state and can be powerful multiplying forces if they’re engaged enough to convince friends and family members to show up and support their candidates, could be a major force in this cycle’s Iowa caucuses. So the Democratic presidential candidates are already making an early effort to court this voting bloc and get students to turn out to caucus this fall.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman faces up to 35 years in prison when she’s sentenced in May for hitting and killing a pedestrian while she was driving drunk. The Des Moines Register reports that 23-year-old Oleaf Teoh was found guilty Friday of vehicular homicide by operating while intoxicated and vehicular homicide by reckless driving in the February 2018 death of 33-year-old Matthew Otto, of Des Moines.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Plains and Midwest states are bracing for another massive winter storm and the prospect of renewed flooding. The National Weather Service says the storm moving east out of the northern Rockies Wednesday and Thursday will pack heavy snow and strong winds. It brings the specter of renewed flooding to a part of the country where massive flooding over the past month has caused billions of dollars in damage, though rivers aren’t likely to rise as much as they did last month.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa social worker has been charged with perjury for giving false testimony in a court proceeding in which a judge removed four children from their parents. Criminal complaints allege that former Department of Human Services case manager Chelsie Gray lied repeatedly during a 2017 hearing in which she recommended a judge terminate the parental rights of a mother and father and be placed in foster care. Gray was arrested and released from jail on bond.

Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “Really proud of the effort given by whole team tonight. Baylee started out hot with a long putt for birdie, her first of the season. Alyssa recovered nicely from an uncharacteristic round at Kuemper last night where one hole spoiled her game. That shows the type of competitor she is. Anna, Hannah, Lauren, & Belle keep bringing their scores down too. That is important to the continued success of our team. As Reagan & Halsey play the game more i look for them to score more consistently as well.”

Cyle Renaud, 4th, 79
Braden Smith, 6th, 79
Drey Newell, 13th, 83
Tate Den Beste 93
Garrett McLaren 97

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “Temps were good in Shenandoah today. Wind was a little strong and the greens were fast. We had several that took many holes to get used to greens. Matt had a great front. Shot one over. Then started the back with a triple and went on the boggy run until the last few holes with pars. Cyle was two over on the front and also went on a boggy run on the back. Had 7 holes that he couldn’t get thing going. Braden played pretty consistent today. Good round for him. Drey started rough with a triple and a double two holes later. However, he rallied and had a good score of 83. Tate was playing pretty well. Hole 7 he lost a ball and lost some focus. He parred the next but then took an 8 on 9 and a triple on 10. Still worked to finish in the 90s. Garrett had never see the course so he was learning as he played. Had some good holes and parred his last which was good to see. it is one of the toughest holes on the course.”
