Paul Goldschmidt also hit a home run for the Cardinals (29-28), who have won three straight for the first time since a five-game streak in late April.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo hit a tie-breaking home run for the second straight game before leaving in the fifth inning due to injury as the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Scott Parel shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to extend his lead to five strokes in the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic. Parel had a 15-under 129 total at Wakonda Club to break the tournament 36-hole record of 13 under set a year ago by eventual winner Tom Lehman.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Boston Bruins have taken a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final with a 7-2 win in St. Louis. Patrice Bergeron opened the scoring on a power play in the first period and Boston jumped to a 4-0 lead before Ivan Barbashev put the Blues on the board 11:05 into the second period. It didn’t matter much as the Bruins chased goaltender Jordan Binnington, who gave up five goals on 19 shots. Game 4 is Monday night in St. Louis.

Flood barrier at Burlington fails, flooding downtown

News

June 1st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A temporary flood barrier at Burlington has failed along the swollen Mississippi River, sending floodwaters rushing into the city’s downtown. The National Weather Service says Burlington officials have confirmed that a large, sand-filled barrier failed Saturday afternoon, forcing some businesses in the downtown area to evacuate.

The weather service had issued a flash flood warning for the area through late Saturday night, saying a four- to six-block area of downtown Burlington is being affected. Authorities urged people in the area to seek higher ground and avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.

The barrier breach is reminiscent of a similar breach April 30 at Davenport, about 75 miles upstream on the Mississippi River. That breach also sent floodwater rushing over several blocks of downtown Davenport.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials are warning people to stay out of the state’s swollen streams. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says water levels in rivers and streams across the state are high because of recent heavy rains. That causes fast currents, dangerous debris and bacteria in the water caused by runoff.

The department says more than 70 wastewater discharges into streams and rivers were reported over Memorial Day weekend.

The department asked Iowa residents to avoid streams until the water recedes
