Wild parsnip found in some Atlantic Parks

Ag/Outdoor, News

June 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department reports the Parks Department has found wild parsnip growing in some of the City parks. Crews are working on getting it all cut down and sprayed. However, please be aware to not expose yourself or your children to it as it will have long lasting hazardous effects on your skin.  Officials with ISU Extension say conditions have been especially favorable this year for wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), a common roadside weed in Iowa.

Wild parsnip plant parts contain a substance called psoralen, which can cause a condition known as “phytophotodermatitis”. This reaction occurs when plant juice gets on the skin and then the skin is exposed to sunlight.

The results are skin reddening, rash development and in severe cases, blisters, skin discoloration, and burning or scalding type pain. Wild parsnip burns often occur in elongated spots or streaks. Dark red or brownish skin discoloration develops where the burn or blisters first appeared and can last for several months, possibly up to two years. Extra care should be taken to wear protective clothing before working with or exposure to wild parsnip.

Wild parsnip is found in open places such as roadsides, pastures, and disturbed areas throughout most of the United States and Canada

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — An eastern Iowa police captain is accusing her police chief and the city she serves of gender discrimination. The Telegraph Herald reports that Dubuque police Capt. Abby Simon filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Iowa District Court for Dubuque County alleging her rights have been violated under Iowa’s Civil Rights Act. Simon is also suing for harassment and retaliation. The lawsuit names Police Chief Mark Dalsing and the city.

The 20-year police veteran’s lawsuit says she was passed over for promotions, even though she scored better in tests and interviews than the men who won the promotions. She says Dalsing also emailed derisory comments about her to several colleagues. Speaking on behalf of Dalsing, spokesman Randy Gehl and City Attorney Crenna Brumwell said legal counsel is reviewing the lawsuit.

(Radio Iowa) — A special investigation by the state auditor’s office has identified more than half a million dollars worth of improper spending by the former office manager of an eastern Iowa organization that promotes economic development. Sharon Jelinek worked for the Iowa City Area Development Group for 15 years. Officials discovered she had taken out a credit card in the organization’s name, used it “almost exclusively for personal purchases” and used the organization’s checking account to pay the bills.

The auditors’ review flagged about 514-thousand dollars worth of spending connected to Jelinek. Auditors found she used the economic development group’s money to pay her monthly cell phone, satellite radio and cable T-V bills. She also bought items on the Home Shopping Network, Amazon and at Walmart with the economic development group’s money.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will challenge Syracuse on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, as part of the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It will mark Iowa’s first-ever visit to the Carrier Dome.

ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event and all games will be available to stream via the ESPN app. Tip times and network designations will be announced at a later date.

Iowa has won four of its last six Challenge games by five points or less. Iowa topped Notre Dame (98-93) in Iowa City in 2013; won at No. 12 North Carolina (60-55) in 2014; outlasted Florida State (78-75) in overtime in Iowa City in 2015; and edged Pitt a year ago in Iowa City (69-68). The Hawkeyes lost at Notre Dame (92-78) in 2017 and fell at Virginia Tech (79-55) in 2018.

This will be Iowa’s fourth all-time meeting against Syracuse and the first as part of the Challenge. The Hawkeyes are 2-1 against the Orange, with all three previous games contested on neutral courts. Iowa won in Buffalo in 1957 (58-52) and Philadelphia (88-77) in 1980 in the Elite Eight. Syracuse was victorious in the last meeting in New York City in 2014 (66-63).

This will mark Iowa’s 19th appearance in the 21-year history of the Challenge.

Both Iowa and Syracuse finished in sixth place in their respective conference standings a year ago. The Hawkeyes finished the 2018-19 season with a 23-12 overall record and advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. The Orange posted a 20-14 overall record and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Last year’s Challenge resulted in a tie, with each conference winning seven games. In the 20 years of the event, 10 of the challenges have been decided by a single game. Since 2009, the Big Ten has won five challenges (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015), the ACC has won two (2016, 2017), and there have been three ties (2012, 2013, 2018).
