DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state of Iowa and a group of doctors at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City will pay a Fairfield woman $2.5 million after she lost both legs to amputation and became paralyzed after what she claimed was a misdiagnosed spinal problem. The State Appeal Board on Tuesday approved a settlement with Isabeau Norwood.

Under the settlement, University of Iowa hospitals doctors will pay more than $833,000 and the state general fund will pay $1.67 million. Both say the settlement doesn’t mean they admitted wrongdoing.

Norwood, who is 55, began complaining of back pain in May 2014. She was seen by several doctors in Fairfield, at University of Iowa hospitals and the state-run Cherokee Mental Health Institute. She finally collapsed, prompting doctors to order a magnetic scan of her spine. They discovered a spinal abscess and other problems.

The settlement resolves her dispute with the state but the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield and four of its doctors go to trial next week. They claim they’re not at fault.

Red Oak Police arrested a 63-year old woman for Theft and Interference with Official Acts, Tuesday. Sheryl Lynne Franzen, of Red Oak, was arrested at around 5:45-p.m. in the 900 block of N. 4th Street, for Theft in the 5th Degree and the Interference charges, after she allegedly resisted arrest. Her bond was set at $300.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — In a story Sept. 3 about a northwestern Iowa man entering a plea in a driving-related death, The Associated Press reported erroneously in a headline that Darrick Toel had pleaded guilty. He pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular homicide and operating while intoxicated.

A northwest Iowa man has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the July death of a man injured in a car crash. The Sioux City Journal reports 38-year-old Darrick Toel, of Le Mars, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Woodbury County District Court to charges of vehicular homicide and operating while intoxicated. Toel was the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a tree on the evening of July 1. His passenger, 37-year-old Ryan Toel of Struble, was injured and died two days later.

Sheriff’s deputies in Montgomery County, arrested 42-year old Jerome Keith McCallum, Tuesday afternoon. The Emerson man was arrested at around 3:55-p.m. for Driving While Revoked. He was taken into custody following a traffic stop in Stanton. McCallum was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

The Harlan Police Department reports four recent arrests. Last Saturday, 34-year old Joseph Rheinhart Smith-Kidd, of Harlan, was arrested following a traffic stop. Smith-Kidd was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with driving while suspended and no seatbelt. On Friday, 29-year old Cameron Stuart Cunningham, of Harlan, was arrested following a call for service. Cunningham was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with public intoxication and supplying alcohol to a person under legal age. And, 37-year old Kristina Marie Namanny, of Harlan, was arrested following a call for service. Namanny was transported to the Shelby County Jail where she was charged with domestic abuse assault.

On Aug. 29th, 35-year old Aubree Jasmine Cline, of Council Bluffs, was arrested following a traffic stop, in Harlan. Cline was transported to the Shelby County Jail where she was charged with operating while intoxicated, driving while suspended, no insurance, and speed.

Police in Glenwood report several arrests took place over the past week: On Aug. 28th, 57-year old David Richey, of Glenwood, was arrested on a Mills County warrant. On Aug. 29th, 19-year old Dylan Janssen, of Harlan, was arrested on a Mills County warrant. And, 52-year old Michael Smith, of Glenwood, was arrested for unlawful possession of prescription drugs and possession of a controlled substance.

On Aug. 30th, 20-year old Reagan Green, of Glenwood, was arrested on a Pott. County warrant. This past Sunday, 52-year old John Meyers, of Glenwood, was arrested for Public Intoxication and Assault causing bodily injury. Today (Tuesday), 36-year old Zachary McCord, of Glenwood, was arrested for public intoxication, interference with official acts bodily injury, interference with official acts, and assault use/display of a weapon. 29-year old John Pepper, of Glenwood, was arrested on a Mills Co. Warrant.

Iowa Republican Governor Kim Reynolds,  Republican Senator Tom Shipley and Representative Tom Moore, along with other dignitaries, were in Atlantic, Tuesday afternoon, to help celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Brocker-Karns and Karns Insurance (BKK).

Chris Karns, BKK President who’s been based out of the Anita office for more than , gave a brief history of the company, prior to introducing his partner, Kip Harris, and then Governor Reynolds. When it was time for the Governor to speak, she called celebrating their 125th Anniversary as a business, a “Major accomplishment.

She said B-K-and K has been here through all the changes, good times and bad, the State has endured. Chris Karns spoke afterward, about what it takes to be in business for 125-years and continuing to expand the opportunities to serve their customers. He hinted they will be adding another location, but didn’t want to reveal where. Karns also acknowledged his competition in Cass County, by saying “They’re all good people and we’re friends with them, and there’s enough business for all of us.” Speaking with reporters after her brief speech, Gov. Reynolds talked about the Trumps Administration’s efforts to reduce the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline, and getting them to reverse that decision.

She was also asked about talks on the trade tariff’s, but said there’s been no date set on resuming those talks.  She said the priority right now should be to ratify the USMCA (U-S, Mexico-Canada trade Agreement).

She said “Everyone of our congressional delegations should be putting a lot of pressure if they want to help not only our farmers, but our families and small businesses and manufacturing.” She said “Let’s get it done.” Prior to attending the event in Atlantic, Tuesday, the Governor was in Council Bluffs, for Google’s 10th Anniversary in Iowa event.

Authorities in northwest Iowa, Tuesday (today) said a Remsen woman missing since Monday contacted enforcement and advised she was in Vermont. Law Enforcement requested she go to the nearest Law Enforcement Agency and positively identify herself.  About an hour later, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Vermont confirmed that they spoke with NICOLE TROMETER and positively identified her by her Iowa Driver’s License.  Franklin County authorities advised NICOLE was in good health. She told Vermont authorities she traveled with DANIEL KITTREDGE willingly to Vermont. At this time the missing person’s investigation will be closed.
