Fast-moving water below dam creates dangers for fishermen

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The fast-moving water flowing out of Gavins Point dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border will create dangerous fishing conditions on the Missouri River this fall. The Sioux City Journal reports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is warning fishermen to take precautions and stay out of restricted areas because of the high volume of water in the river.

The paddlefish snagging season begins Tuesday. But the Corps plans to continue releasing 80,000 cubic feet per second of water from the dam throughout October. All fishermen should wear life vests and be careful of their footing. The Corps says boaters should not anchor their boats in the area near the dam because of the turbulent water.

Nodaway Valley competes at Steve Johnson XV Invite

The Nodaway Valley Cross Country teams competed at the Steve Johnson High School Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Wartburg College.

The girls finished in 15th place. Sophia Broers was the top finisher for the Wolverines in 19th place overall, Reagan Weinheimer was 65th. Sioux City North won the team title and Kora Malecek of Onalaska was the individual winner.

The Nodaway Valley boys team finished 8th in the team race. Josh Baudler led the way with a 9th place finish. Toby Bower came in 39th. Sioux City North won the team title and had the individual winner in Jaysen Bouwers.

TJ boys and Harlan girls win at Harlan XC Meet

The Thomas Jefferson boys and Harlan girls cross country teams were winners on Saturday at the Harlan Meet. Wimach Gilo of Thomas Jefferson was the boys individual winner and Lucy Borkowski of Harlan won the girls race.

Mon. Night: Mostly cloudy w/a 60% chance of showers & thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1am. Low around 68. S @ 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 72. Our Low 48. We received .25” rain Saturday evening into early this morning (as of 7-a.m.). Last year on this date our High was 49 and the Low was 45. The record High in Atlantic on this date was 96 in 1953. The Record Low was 17 in 1899.

CAM School Board to hold a Workshop session, Monday evening

Members of the CAM School District’s Board of Education will hold a board workshop with Boyd Jones, Monday (Sept. 30th). Their session includes discussion with regard to the initial findings of the Facility Study. The meeting in the CAM High School Superintendent’s Office, begins at 7:00 p.m.

During their meeting this past August, Superintendent Paul Croghan reports assessments of the building facilities were making progress.  The initial focus, he said, is to limit access to the entire building by changing the main entrance. The assessments have included everything from color schemes to roofs and other infrastructure concerns.  That includes systematically organized classrooms, backstops, fields, concessions, etc.

Cass County Supervisors to discuss/act on vacant township position

The Cass County Board of Supervisors will meet 9-a.m. Monday (Sept. 30th), in a regular session. The meeting takes place in their Board Room at the Cass County Courthouse. On their agenda, in addition to Department Head reports, is discussion and possible action on a township position.

The Brighton Township Clerk’s position is vacant as of Oct. 1st. Both the clerk and trustee are appointed by the Board of Supervisors.

The Supervisors will also continue their discussion, with regard to the County Employee Handbook and Safety Policy.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns, Toren Young added a career-high 131 yards rushing and 14th-ranked Iowa throttled Middle Tennessee 48-3, moving to 4-0 for the third time in 10 years. Brandon Smith caught both of Stanley’s TD throws for the Hawkeyes. Iowa gained 644 yards, its most in coach Kirk Ferentz’s 21 seasons in charge.

WACO, Texas (AP) — John Mayers kicked a 38-yarder with 21 seconds left for the first field goal of the redshirt freshman’s career, lifting Baylor to a 23-21 victory over Iowa State after the Bears blew a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. The win in the Big 12 opener for both teams was the second in a row for the Bears. They won their sixth straight game going back to last season. The Cyclones lost their conference opener for the 16th time in 18 seasons.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — No. 5 Ohio State was supposed to get its first big test of the season at Nebraska. It hardly turned out that way. Justin Fields threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez was intercepted on three of the Cornhuskers’ first four series, and the Buckeyes turned in their most impressive performance of the season in a 48-7 win.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Chuba Hubbard ran for 296 yards and a touchdown on just 25 carries, and Oklahoma State shut down No. 24 Kansas State’s own vaunted rushing attack in a weather-delayed 26-13 victory Saturday night. Hubbard finished with runs of 53, 84 and 44 yards in his dominant performance. Skylar Thompson was 11 of 23 for 118 yards for the Wildcats, who were coming off a bye following their big win at Mississippi State.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals’ push for a division title will go down to the final day of the regular season following an 8-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Adam Wainwright allowed four homers for the first time in his career, but the Cardinals maintained a one-game lead over Milwaukee for the NL Central lead when the Brewers lost 3-2 in 10 innings at Colorado. If the teams are tied after Sunday’s regular season finales, they will play a tiebreaking Game 163 in St. Louis on Monday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins lost third baseman Luis Arraez to an apparent right leg injury in the seventh inning of their 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Arraez collided with first baseman Willians Astudillo while he was chasing Hunter Dozier’s pop fly at the mound. Astudillo caught the ball and Arraez grabbed the back of his right leg as he tumbled to the ground.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Freshman Max Duggan led touchdown drives on all three of his first-half possessions as TCU scored on every first-half possession and was never threatened in a 51-14 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play. TCU (3-1, 1-0) dominated in every area of the first half against Kansas (2-3, 0-2), which ended a 48-game road losing streak to Power 5 opponents earlier this season at Boston College.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Rev. William Joensen has been ordained as the 10th bishop to lead the Roman Catholic Diocese of Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports that more than 1,500 parishioners witnessed the ordination Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in West Des Moines, the diocese’s largest. Pope Francis selected the 59-year-old Joensen, an Iowa native, to replace former Bishop Richard Pates, who retired after holding the role for more than a decade.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a man who witnesses reported was sitting in a Des Moines street has been hit by a vehicle and killed. Police Sgt. Paul Parizek says the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Friday on SW 9th Street. Medics arrived to find a 62-year-old Des Moines resident had been hit by a southbound vehicle as it crossed the Racoon River. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he died. The man’s name had not been released by late Saturday morning.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa health officials say more vaping-related illnesses have been reported in the state. The Iowa Department of Public Health says in a news release that 23 cases of respiratory illness associated with vaping have been reported in Iowa _ up from 15 last week. There have been no deaths in the state. Of the 23 Iowa cases, ages range from 17 to 60, and most of the patients were male. Officials say 18 have reported vaping some form of THC.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Applications are being sought to fill a vacancy on Iowa City’s Human Rights Commission. The vacancy is an unexpired term that runs through the end of 2020. The group meets monthly and is charged with educating the public on civil and human rights. That includes planning programs and activities to eliminate unlawful discrimination.

Absentee Voting in Adair County begins Oct. 7th

The Adair County Auditor’s Office reports Absentee Ballots will be available October 7, 2019 in the Auditor’s Office, for: Adair, Bridgewater, Casey, Fontanelle, Greenfield, Orient, and Stuart cities and the Adair Casey, CAM, Nodaway Valley, Orient Macksburg, and West Central Valley School Districts.

Adair County voters may vote in the Auditor’s Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (beginning Oct. 7th), or they may request a ballot be mailed to them. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2019. The last day to vote absentee in the Auditor’s Office is Monday, November 4, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Absentee Ballot request forms are available in the Auditor’s Office or they can be downloaded at the Secretary of State’s website at http://www.sos.iowa.gov.
