The National Weather Service says three short-lived, but highly visible landspout tornadoes touched-down across northern Iowa Wednesday afternoon and evening, as a line of thunderstorms slowly progressed southeast over the area. The tornadoes caused no reported structural or tree damage with only crop damage being reported.

The first report of a tornado came in from Kossuth County, where a small and brief landspout touched down five-miles west/northwest of Algona, at around 5:15-p.m. A funnel cloud was also seen going up and down toward the ground 5-miles west of Algona, a few minutes later.

In Winnebago County, a funnel cloud was reported 4 miles west/northwest of Scarville, at around 6-p.m. About 12 minutes later, multiple social media pictures showed the funnel extending close to, if not touching, the ground in the same area.

In Humboldt County, a funnel cloud was seen forming half-way to the ground, two-miles west/southwest of Bode. A moment later, the same twister briefly touched down.

DES MOINES—Recent rains have improved groundwater levels across Iowa, while the National Drought Monitor shows about a third of the state still rated as abnormally dry. Heavy rains that fell on July 19 will be reflected in the next update.

Substantial rainfall during July has improved shallow groundwater conditions in central Iowa and most of southeast Iowa from slight drought to normal.  A small region of southeast Iowa continues to be in slight drought conditions.  Shallow groundwater levels in most of northwest, southwest and northeast Iowa continue to be above normal for July.

In the past two weeks, the average statewide rainfall has been about 4.02 inches, nearly double the normal amount for this period. Two-week rain totals varied from a 1.56 inches at Akron up to 9.01 inches near Red Oak.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed at least three tornadoes moved across eastern Iowa during Saturday’s storms. KWWL reports the tornadoes developed in rural areas of the state. They damaged some farm buildings, trees and crops, but mostly avoided towns.

One tornado was reported near Lake Delhi in Delaware County around 4:20 p.m. Saturday. It generated winds up to 80 mph. The second tornado struck near Worthington in Dubuque County. It generated winds up to 70 mph. The third tornado was reported near Farley in Dubuque County. Details of that tornado are still being determined.
