News

November 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CST

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — A northeastern Iowa man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail _ all but seven days of it suspended _ for torturing the family dog and making his children watch a video of the torture. The Buchanan County prosecutor’s office says in a news release that 42-year-old Jason O’Neil Johnson, of Independence, was sentenced Tuesday. He was found guilty by a jury in August of animal torture.

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — An Iowa woman charged in the hit-and-run fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in northeastern Nebraska is set to stand trial in the case. The Sioux City Journal reports that 19-year-old Maria Gonzalez-Diego, of Sioux City, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. She now faces arraignment Dec. 3 on charges of vehicular homicide and failure to stop at the scene of a fatality crash in the June 24 death of 62-year-old Antonia Lopez De Ramirez.

RUNNELLS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say six people, including children, have escaped a house fire in Runnells. Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Heath Osberg told KCCI the fire broke out Tuesday morning. Several agencies responded, and Osberg says one person was taken to a hospital. Others were treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Members and employees of the governing board for Iowa’s public universities could soon be barred from gambling on the college teams they help oversee. A policy proposed by the Board of Regents would bar board members and staff from betting on games involving the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Iowa State Cyclones or the University of Northern Iowa Panthers. The board will consider adopting the policy at its meeting next week.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior Michael Jacobson led seven Cyclones in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds and Iowa State throttled Mississippi Valley State 110-74 in its season opener. Tyrese Haliburton had 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals for the Cyclones, who improved to 7-0 against the Delta Devils.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Reserve DJ McDonald scored a career-high 15 points, Dragan Elkaz added 14 and George Willborn III had 13 as UC Riverside upset Nebraska 66-47 to spoil Fred Hoiberg’s coaching debut with the Cornhuskers. The Big West’s Highlanders, who went 10-23 last season and have had one winning season since joining Division I in 2000, won for the first time over a Power Five opponent since beating California in November 2017. Nebraska lost a season opener at home for the first time since 1980.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — No. 18 Iowa is preparing for this weekend’s visit to No. 16 Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes have one of the top defenses in the country. It will be challenged by Badgers running back Jonathan Taylor. Wisconsin has the nation’s top-ranked defense, and the Hawkeyes say they know it will be a physical road game on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State entered this season with its highest expectations in years. The next two weeks will determine whether the Cyclones can meet those lofty goals. Iowa State which had a bye last week after an upset loss to Oklahoma State, is facing one of the more important two-week stretches in recent memory. The Cyclones play at No. 9 Oklahoma before hosting Texas.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals manager Mike Shildt has been given a new three-year contract through the 2022 season. Shildt was hired in 2018 and his initial deal ran through 2020. St. Louis also announced president of baseball operations John Mozeliak received a three-year extension through 2023. The Cardinals exercised a 2020 option on general manager Mike Girsch and gave him a two-year extension through 2022.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs and team President Mark Donovan have signed a long-term contract extension. Terms were not disclosed. Donovan joined the Chiefs as chief operating officer in 2009 and was promoted to team president in 2011.

Jacobson scores 20, Iowa State pounds MVSU 110-74

Sports

November 5th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Point guard Tyrese Haliburton stuffed the box score in a spectacular opener for Iowa State. It likely won’t be the last time the Cyclones’ sophomore dominates multiple aspects of a game in 2019-20. Senior Michael Jacobson led seven Cyclones in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds and Iowa State throttled Mississippi Valley State 110-74 in its season opener on Tuesday. But Haliburton stole the show with 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals for the Cyclones. Led by Haliburton’s elite distribution, Iowa State had 32 assists, three shy of the school record, on 45 made baskets.
UP NEXT
Iowa State plays at Oregon State on Saturday.
The Delta Devils continue their bye game tour with a trip to Utah on Friday.
