New report details low staffing, high turnover in Iowa nursing homes

News

May 4th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Iowa Capital Dispatch) – More than 43% of all Iowa nursing homes do not meet upcoming federal mandates on staffing levels, a new national report shows. According to the Iowa Capital Dispatch, the report also indicates 21 Iowa care facilities each cycled through three to five nursing home administrators during 2023. Using newly published data collected by the federal government, a nonprofit advocacy group called the Long-Term Care Community Coalition issued a detailed report this week outlining the staffing levels at every Medicare-certified nursing home in the nation during the fourth quarter of 2023.

The report compares actual staffing levels with the Biden administration’s new rule mandating specific staffing levels in Medicare-certified nursing homes. That rule requires the presence of a registered nurse 24 hours per day, seven days a week in all facilities, as well as 3.48 hours per day, per resident of total nursing-staff time. The rule will be phased in over the next five years and includes exemptions and waivers for facilities in rural areas that are making a good-faith effort to meet the new mandates.

The coalition’s report shows that 6 in 10 of all U.S. nursing homes would have met the new nurse-staffing standard of 3.48 hours in the fourth quarter of 2023. Iowa homes fell below the national average, with 56.5% of them meeting the new standard.

The report indicates the Iowa homes with the lowest nurse staffing levels in the fourth quarter of 2023 were Arbor Springs of West Des Moines, Midlands Living Center of Council Bluffs, Linn Haven Rehab & Health Care of New Hampton, Pleasant Acres Care Center of Hull, Northbrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center of Cedar Rapids, Crest Haven Care Centre of Creston and Aspire of Perry. All reported less than 2.5 hours of total nursing care per resident, per day, according to the report.

A separate set of data published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services indicates that 14% of Iowa’s 422 nursing facilities were cited for insufficient staffing in fiscal year 2023. That’s more than double the national average, which was 5.9%.

The report also highlights a problem in many nursing homes nationwide: high staff turnover, which disrupts continuity of care and leads to errors by workers who aren’t familiar with residents’ needs.  The Iowa homes with the highest rate of nursing-staff turnover, ranging from 85% to 100%, were Risen Son Christian Village of Council Bluffs, Sunrise Retirement Community of Sioux City, Wesley Acres of Des Moines, Arbor Springs of West Des Moines, Dunlap Specialty Care, Azria Health Park Place of Des Moines, Sunny Knoll Care Centre of Rockwell City, and Montezuma Specialty Care.

The report also identifies the Iowa nursing homes that had the highest number of administrators who left employment with the facility during 2023. The Elmwood Care Centre of Onawa and Heritage Specialty Care of Cedar Rapids, are each reported to have had five administrators who left the facility in 2023. Azria Health Park Place of Des Moines, Sunny Knoll Care Centre of Rockwell City, Crest Haven Care Centre of Creston, Cedar Falls Health Care Center, Premier Estates of Muscatine, Westwood Specialty Care of Sioux City, Casa De Paz Health Care Center of Sioux City, Wesley Park Centre of Newton, and Garden View Care Center of Shenandoah each are reported to have had four administrators leave during the year. Ten other Iowa nursing homes had three administrators leave during the year.

Hawkeyes Win Game 1 Against Wildcats

Sports

May 4th, 2024 by Seth Tiegs

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team used an eighth inning two-out rally to defeat Northwestern, 4-3, on Friday night at Duane Banks Field.
“Northwestern played really well,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Pitched us tough, and it was one of those nights where you wonder if you were going to burn both of our pitchers and not get the win. The pitching was key.”
The Hawkeye trailed the Wildcats, 2-1, after the first inning. The teams were locked in a pitcher’s duel holding each other scoreless for the next six innings. In the top of the eighth Northwestern plated a run to take a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the eighth the Hawkeyes rattled off four hits with two outs capped by a two RBI single from Cade Moss to take the 4-3 lead.
“We stuck with our approach,” said Moss. “We hit a lot of hard balls tonight just right at guys. Didn’t get a chance to break it open in those middle innings, but when the time came everyone stuck with what they were doing. Ended up hitting the ball hard and four two-out hits, couldn’t have written it up better.”
Jack Young would take the ball for Iowa in the top of the ninth and strikeout the side to earn the save and close the door.
Anthony Watts got the start on the mound for Iowa. He threw 4 2/3 innings and struck out seven and allowed two runs on four hits and three walks.
Watts turned the ball over to Aaron Savary who threw 3 1/3 innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Savary allowed one run on three hits and struck out three.
Davis Cop, Will Mulflur and Michael Seegers joined Moss as Hawkeyes with two hits on the night. Moss had the two RBIs and Reese Moore and Ben Wilmes each plated a run.
“They didn’t give us anything,” said Heller. “Aside from the error in the first that allowed us to get a run when Reese doubled. They played really stingy baseball, and only had four free bases on the night. It was a strange night for us offensively, I felt like we were getting some good barrels that we didn’t get rewarded for. You don’t see that very often.”
All four of Iowa’s runs came with two outs and the Hawkeyes hit .429 (6-14) with runners on base.
The Hawkeyes and Wildcats square off in game two of the series tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. RHP Brody Brecht is set to matchup with RHP Jack Dyke.

AMES, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Hayden Kuhn climbed to third on Iowa’s all-time list in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday at the ISU Alumni Invite.

Kuhn clocked an 8:50.99 in the event and placed second. The Marion, Iowa, native made a nine-second improvement on his previous best.

“Hayden (Kuhn) had a fantastic performance tonight in his 3,000-meter steeplechase,” associate head coach Randy Hasenbank said. “He went from 61st in the NCAA West Region rankings to 34th, which locks down a qualifying mark. I am proud of Hayden and how far he has come in this event. He has such high expectations of himself, and I am really excited about his breakthrough performance tonight.”

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Iowa softball team fell to Illinois in game one of a three-game series, 2-1, in 10 innings on Friday night at Eichelberger Field.

Jalen Adams got the start for the Hawkeyes and allowed just three hits through the first five innings.

Freshman Jena Young had a one out double in the top of third. Iowa had runners on the corners with two outs but were unable to capitalize.

Sophomore Tory Bennett put the Hawkeyes on the board first in the fifth with a double to left, scoring Grace Banes. Illinois responded in the home half scoring on an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at one. Iowa had a scoring opportunity in the sixth as freshman Devin Bowman got to third after a two out double but was left there as the Illini recorded the third out. Both teams were retired in order in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

Adams continued to keep the Illini hitters off the base path as she faced just seven hitters through the eighth and ninth. The Hawkeyes were able to get runners on the corners with one out in the top of the 10th but once again left the stranded. The Illini ended the game in the bottom of the 10th after a leadoff double came around to score on a single.

Iowa finished the game with one run on eight hits and three errors. The Hawkeyes left 11 runners on base.
