Pott. County Sheriff’s report (3/9/20)

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports three recent arrests. Saturday night, 35-year old Tyler Blake McCreary was arrested in Council Bluffs, following a reported disturbance. McCreary booked into the Pott. County Jail for Interference with Official Acts and later released. At around 12:10-a.m., Saturday, 22-year old Brittnee Marie Chase was arrested following a traffic stop at Highway 92 and 220th Street, near Council Bluffs. Chase was pulled over for failure to have her vehicles’ rear license plate lamp illuminated. She was arrested for Driving While Barred/Habitual Offender, and later released from custody.

And, at around 10:40-p.m. on March 4th, 21-year old Wyatt Dean Baldwin, of Council Bluffs, was arrested for a Sex Offender Registry Violation, stemming from an incident on March 3rd. Baldwin remained in the Pott. County Jail at last report.

Atlantic Archers fare well at NASP Iowa State Tournament

The Iowa State National Archery in Schools Program Tournaments were held over the weekend at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

The Atlantic High School team finished 7th out of 33 teams in the Bullseye Tournament with 3,364 points. They finished 11th out of 16 in the 3D Tournament with 1,643 points.

Cooper Jipsen finished 5th out of 404 High School boys in the Bullseye Tourney with 292 points. Carter Smith was 10th with 290 points. Halle Copeland finished 11th out of 341 girls with 287 points.

Zach Colton was 21st our of 124 High School boys in the 3D Tourney with 281 points. Dayna Dreager was 21st out of 96 High School Girls with 277 points.

The Atlantic Middle School team went 18th out of 33 teams in Bullseye, and 11th out of 21 in 3D.

Keegan Kemp finished 25th out of 485 Middle School boys with 276 points in Bullseye. Mariah Hadley was 38th out of 402 Middle School girls with 274 points.

Kemp also finished 12th out of 161 Middle  School boys in 3D with 275 points. Connor Johnson was 35th with 263. Kaydee Pedersen was 36th out of 117 Middle School girls with 259 points in 3D.

Ringgold County man arrested for carrying weapons on school grounds & other charges

The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office reports 56-year old Thomas Scott Kinton, from Ellston, was arrested Friday night after authorities received a 9-1-1 call about a man with a gun at Mount Ayr High School. Deputies arrived at the school shortly after the call.

Kinton was subsequently arrested for carrying weapons on school grounds, possession of a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, and consumption of alcohol in a public place. He was being held at the Ringgold County Jail until seen by the magistrate.

And, a woman from Kellerton was arrested Friday night for Domestic Abuse Assault-1st Offense. 23-year old Baylee Kolene Stark was booked into the Ringgold County Jail and held without bond until seen by a magistrate.

Ex-top judge at Iowa agency pleased to settle reprisal claim

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The former top judge at Iowa Workforce Development says he’s pleased to settle a long-running lawsuit alleging that his 2013 layoff was retaliatory and unlawful. Joseph Walsh said the $99,000 payment recently approved by the state to settle his lawsuit could have been higher had he not been able to return to state employment shortly after his layoff. Iowa Workforce Development eliminated Walsh’s job shortly after he opposed an attempt to make his position a political appointment.

Walsh contended, correctly, that federal law required his position to be merit-based and insulated from politics. The agency’s then-director Teresa Wahlert withdrew that plan but then abruptly laid him Walsh weeks later.

Griswold annual Audit report released

Auditor of State Rob Sand today (Monday) released an agreed-upon procedures report on the City of Griswold, for the period covering July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. The agreed-upon procedures engagement was performed pursuant to the Code of Iowa. Sand reported eight findings related to the receipt and disbursement of taxpayer funds. The findings address issues such as a lack of segregation of duties, the Fire Department bank account held outside of the City’s control, Fire Department questionable disbursements and moneys provided to non-profit corporations in violation of Article III, Section 31 of the Constitution of Iowa.

Sand provided the City with recommendations to address each of the findings. Six of the eight findings discussed above are repeated from the prior year. The report noted the City Council has a fiduciary responsibility to provide oversight of the City’s operations and financial transactions. Oversight is typically defined as the “watchful and responsible care” a governing body exercises in its fiduciary capacity.

Haliburton, Bolton recognized by Big 12

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State men’s basketball sophomores Tyrese Haliburton and Rasir Bolton have been recognized by the Big 12 coaches with all-conference honors.

Haliburton earned All-Big 12 second-team accolades, while Bolton earned honorable mention recognition.

Haliburton, an Oshkosh, Wisconsin native, played 22 games before missing the final eight games of the regular season due to a broken left wrist. Haliburton led the Cyclones with 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.5 steals. He reached double figures in 18 games this season, scoring 20 or more points six times.

Prior to his injury, Haliburton was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award. In addition to his league-high 6.5 assists, Haliburton also boasted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.3. He ranked among the top-10 in the league in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, steals, three-point field goal percentage, three-point field goals made, assist-to-turnover ratio and minutes played before the injury ended his season.

Bolton averaged 14.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in his first season as a Cyclone. The Petersburg, Virginia native reached double figures in 23 of 30 games played, including a season-high 29 points against Florida A&M. Bolton has recorded double-digit points in 12 of the last 13 games, missing yesterday’s season finale due to injury.

Bolton is one of the Big 12’s best free-throw shooters, connecting on 84.8 percent of his team-high 138 free-throw attempts.

The Cyclones return to action Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship when they face Oklahoma State.

ISU has two Big 12 Wrestling Champs, Cyclones team Runner-Up

TULSA, Okla. – Redshirt junior Ian Parker and redshirt freshman David Carr earned individual Big 12 titles on Sunday night at the Big 12 Championship at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively. As a team, No. 21 Iowa State finished second to No. 11 Oklahoma State at the conference championship with 116.5 team points.

The Big 12 Championship saw eight Cyclones finish in the top-five at their respective weights, and all eight of those individuals earning spots at the 2020 NCAA Championships. Carr (1st), Parker (1st), Alex Mackall (2nd), Gannon Gremmel (2nd), Jarrett Degen (3rd), Chase Straw (4th), Sam Colbray (4th) and Marcus Coleman (5th) all earned automatic bids to the national championships in Minneapolis, Minn., on March 19-21.

Hansen wins 4th straight National Title to lead Grand View to another Team Title

Exira-EHK alum Evan Hansen accomplished something no other Grand View Wrestler has on Saturday night at the NAIA National Wrestling Tournament, he won his 4th National Championship of his career. Hansen won the 197-pound title for Grand View and helped his team to another team title as well. The Kimballton native capped off his senior season with a 15-0 record.

Grand View won their 9th National Championship in the past ten years. The Vikings scored 157 total points to win it. Menlo (Calif.) was the Runner-Up with 84.5 points.

The tourney was held at Hartman Arena in Park City, KS over the weekend.

Hansen beat fellow Iowan Isaac Bartel, of Montana State in the title match. He’s the 8th athlete in NAIA history to win four national titles and the first for Grand View to win four straight.
