Schull and hot bats lead Clarinda past Atlantic baseball

Sports

June 18th, 2020 by admin

Michael Schull held Atlantic to 1 run in 4 1/3 innings of work and the Clarinda Cardinals racked up 12 hits on their way to a 12-3 win over Atlantic on Thursday night in Griswold.

The Cardinals jumped on top early with 2 runs in the first. Atlantic pushed one across in the bottom of the inning but the Cardinals followed with 4 in the second and 3 more in the third to lead 9-1 after 3. Clarinda cruised to the win from there with the Trojans only threatening a big inning in the 5th when they scored two and left 3 on base.

Schull got the win with 6 strikeouts and never faced more than four batters in an inning. Cooper Neal came on to get the save and finished with 4 strikeouts.

Dayton Templeton took the loss for Atlantic going just two frames before Brody O’Brien came on to finish the rest of the game. Ethan and Grant Sturm had two hits each on the night and Grant scored two runs.

The Trojans fall to 1-2 and will get ready to face a tough St. Albert team on Monday night. We’ll have that game on KJAN.

Clarinda improves to 2-1 on the season and will travel to face Denison-Schleswig Friday.

The “Southwest Iowa Squadron of Heroes” will use the funds to help acquire a trailer for parades, or trading cards to hand out to young people, with whom they strive to have positive interactions.

Their Mission Statement says their goal is to “Affect a positive influence in one person’s life (hopefully a young person), and the efforts/cost/time will all be worthwhile. We may never know the result or the particular person we had a positive contact with and that part of the equation does not matter.” In addition, they formed to let the public know that we have heroes all around us, and sometimes, we have the hero within us.

Iowa Speedway’s IndyCar races to allow fans

Sports

June 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

A limited number of spectators will be allowed at Iowa Speedway each night for IndyCar races July 17-18.

About 5,000-6,000 tickets will be available each night at the facility, which has more than 25,000 permanent seats. Groups of fans will be separated by at least 6 feet in order to align with state guidelines for COVID-19 at the oval track, which is just under a mile long.

All tickets previously purchased for the Iowa races will be honored, including season tickets. But seating will be reassigned for all existent ticketholders in order to follow safe social distancing guidelines. A limited number of tickets are still available for purchase.

IndyCar didn’t allow fans for its first race of this season June 6 at Texas, and no spectators will be at the next race July 4 on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Tickets are already on sale for the two races July 11-12 at Road America in Wisconsin, on the 4-mile, 14-turn road course.

Cedar Rapids police fire officer who shot, paralyzed man

News

June 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A white Cedar Rapids police officer who shot a black man in 2016, leaving him paralyzed, has been fired for violating department rules. Department spokesman Greg Beulow says Sgt. Lucas Jones was dismissed Thursday following an internal investigation. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the investigation was linked to the shooting of Jerime Mitchell during a traffic stop in November 2016.

Jones pulled Mitchell over in November 2016 because the license plate lights on his pickup truck were out. Police video shows Mitchell driving away with Jones caught in the door of his truck. Jones says he ordered Mitchell to stop before shooting him.

Reynolds signs coronavirus lawsuit protection bill into law

News

June 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A bill Republican lawmakers passed that would offer broad protection from coronavirus lawsuits for doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, meatpacking plants, restaurants and other businesses was signed into law Thursday by Gov. Kim Reynolds. The measure, which is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2020, was vigorously opposed by Democrats, who tried repeatedly to amend it to offer protections for meatpacking plant workers and residents of nursing homes.

Republicans defeated those efforts. Similar efforts to curb what supporters consider frivolous lawsuits are underway in Congress and several other states.

Reynolds won’t give timeline for Iowa felon voting order

News

June 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says she has plenty of time to draft and sign an executive order enabling felons to vote in Iowa before the November election. Despite the pressure of advocacy groups and protesters who stood outside her office door Thursday shouting “let them vote,” she declined to say when she’d sign the order.

Reynolds has tried unsuccessfully to get the legislature to pass a constitutional amendment that would restore voting rights after felons complete their sentences. Iowa is the only state to automatically revoke voting rights for felons and to require them to individually petition the governor to get their rights back.
