Bars, restaurants face state shut down order for failing to enforce social distancing

News

July 30th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A state agency will take “additional steps” to enforce social distancing in Iowa bars and restaurants — and that includes shutting a business down for violations. The announcement from the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division includes a warning from its director that businesses need to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 — and bars and restaurants that choose not to will face consequences.

Businesses are to provide six-feet of social distancing between customers and patrons cannot roam, but must be seated to be served. A bar or restaurant that serves liquor faces a thousand dollar fine on a first offense — a business that just serves food will first get a warning. On a third offense, the state will revoke the operating license for the bar or restaurant.

Inquiry finds racial bias, bullying in Iowa football program

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An investigative report has found that the Iowa football program has suffered from racial bias against Black players and bullying by a small number of current and former coaches. University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld says the report from an outside law firm shows that the “climate and culture must and will change within our football program.” Coach Kirk Ferentz, the longest-tenured head coach in college football, is expected to keep his job. The report found that many players believe he has already made several positive changes.

A press conference on the report findings is scheduled to be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas will have season-ending surgery to repair a tendon in his strained right forearm. Mikolas was supposed to start on Wednesday at Minnesota. Right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon took the mound against the Twins instead. The 31-year-old Mikolas missed spring training with the injury, but he ramped up his activity after the virus shutdown and pitched four innings for the Cardinals in an exhibition game last week.
