LaVONNE ANDERSON, 89, of Harlan, died Friday, July 31st, at home. Funeral services for LaVONNE ANDERSON will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Aug. 4th, at the First Baptist Church, in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Man from Stuart arrested in Red Oak

Police in Red Oak, Saturday, arrested a man from Stuart on a Dept. of Corrections warrant for Violation of Parole. Authorities say 27-year old Jesse Patrick Beaman was taken into custody at around 7:30-p.m. in the 200 block of W. 3rd Street, in Red Oak. Beaman was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted in his arrest.

Creston man arrested in Montgomery County

A Creston man seen walking in the 2000 block of Highway 34 in Montgomery County early this (Sunday) morning, was questioned and then taken into custody on a Union County warrant for Failure to Appear on a charge of Assault on a person in a certain occupation. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports Anthony Wasson was arrested at around 4:30-a.m., and transported to the Montgomery County Jail, where he was being held on a $1,000 bond. Red Oak Police assisted Deputies in handling the arrest.

Class 1A

Don Bosco, Gilbertville 3, Newman Catholic, Mason City 2

For the first time since 1978, the Dons are state champs. Don Bosco took down Newman Catholic 3-2 in the Class 1A title game Saturday. The Dons denied the Knights’ quest for a four-peat with an offensive boom in the bottom of the sixth. Don Bosco’s Charlie Hogan entered Saturday’s contest with just three hits all season, one of which coming earlier in the state tournament. But on Saturday, the junior connected on a pair of big-time hits, including the go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Hogan finished a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate Saturday.

Class 2A

Van Meter 6, Des Moines Christian 0

For the first time in school history, the Bulldogs are back-to-back state champions. Van Meter defeated Des Moines Christian 6-0 in the 2A championship Saturday, claiming the school’s second title in as many years. This was Van Meter’s third title in school history. The Bulldogs won in 2019 and 2003. Both teams are members of the West Central Conference. Van Meter won the regular-season meeting 1-0.

Class 3A

Norwalk 8, Gilbert 6

Norwalk won its first state tournament in more than 10 years, taking down Gilbert 8-6 on Saturday for the Class 3A title.

Class 4A

Johnston 11, Ankeny 8

Johnston clinched its fifth title in program history with an 11-8 win over Ankeny in the 4A state championship game Saturday night at Principal Park. The Dragons rallied from a 7-3 deficit, outscoring the Hawks 8-1 over the game’s final three innings. Johnston previously won the state tournament in 2017, 2013, 2008, and 1977.

(AP) — Gio Gonzalez made his first start for the Chicago White Sox more than 16 years after drafting him, and the left-hander responded by holding Kansas City scoreless into the fourth inning in an 11-5 victory Saturday night. Eloy Jimenez hit a three-run homer and finished with a career-high four hits, and rookie Luis Robert had four while finishing a triple shy of the cycle, leading a White Sox barrage of 21 hits in all. Leury Garcia also had four hits for Chicago. Whit Merrifield hit a two-run homer and Ryan O’Hearn also had two RBIs for the Royals.

UNDATED (AP) — The coronavirus has forced baseball’s 17th postponement in 10 days, prompting at least two more players to opt out and casting doubt the league can complete the 2020 season. A Cardinals-Brewers game in Milwaukee was postponed for the second straight day after one more player and three staff members with St. Louis tested positive for the coronavirus, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Milwaukee then announced that Gold Glove center fielder Lorenzo Cain will not participate in the rest of the 2020 season. Miami Marlins second baseman Isan Díaz also announced he is opting out.

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas community college has reached a settlement with the New Jersey family of a football player who died of heatstroke after team conditioning drills in 2018. Garden City Community College announced the settlement late Friday with the family of Braeden Bradforth. Details of the settlement were not announced. Bradforth, a 19-year-old from Newton, New Jersey, died after being found unconscious after the first day of football conditioning on Aug. 1, 2018. College President Ryan Ruda said in a news release the settlement was recently approved by a court. He said the school has made several improvements to athletic protocols since Bradforth’s death.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Denzel Mahoney and Damien Jefferson announced they are withdrawing from the NBA draft and returning to Creighton for their senior seasons. Mahoney averaged 12 points and three rebounds after becoming eligible in December. He scored in double figures in 14 of 21 games, helping the Bluejays win 16 of those games. Jefferson averaged better than nine points and five rebounds while starting 29 of 30 games. Creighton finished 24-7, won a share of the Big East title and was ranked No. 7 in the final Associated Press Top 25.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Sioux City police officers could be wearing body cameras by the end of the year. Police Chief Rex Mueller says the city council will be asked Monday to approve spending $260,000 for 120 body cameras. Mayor Bob Scott said he would be shocked if the proposal doesn’t pass unanimously. Mueller said after training, officers could be wearing the cameras late this year. Purchasing cameras is voluntary for Iowa law enforcement agencies, Sioux City has been considering them for several years but Mueller said the financing was never available because of other city priorities.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — One influential pork company has received the vast majority of payments from an Iowa program designed to support farmers who euthanized their hogs after the coronavirus devastated their industry. Newly released data shows that Christensen Farms has received $1.86 million from the Iowa Disposal Assistance Program. That’s 72% of the $2.6 million the program has paid to date. Christensen Farms is one of the nation’s largest family-owned pork producers, The Sleepy Eye, Minnesota-based company has received reimbursement payments for disposing of 46,599 euthanized hogs. The 15 other companies and farmers who have received payments reported euthanizing about 18,000 hogs combined.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A 37-year-old Waterloo man was sentenced to 15 years in prison on gun charges after he shot a man in 2019. Alberto Quinto-Pascual shot Alejandro Franco at a Waterloo apartment and Franco later died from his injuries. Quinto-Pascual was not charged with murder but was sentenced Friday in federal court on gun charges, in a move the increased his sentence. Quinto-Pascual is a citizen of Mexico, and will likely be deported following his prison time. Prosecutors said the two men met at a bar and then went to a house, where Quinto-Pascual shot Franco. Quinto-Pascual told police Franco shot himself.

UNDATED (AP) — Officials from states across the country who are hoping to expand broadband internet to underserved areas with federal money appropriated to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic are scrambling to finish the projects by the end of the year. To comply with the current CARES Act rules, states must have the broadband projects, which can typically take months if not years of planning and construction, up and running by Dec. 30. In Vermont, the Legislature cut back on what lawmakers would have liked to allocate from $100 million to less than $20 million because they didn’t believe they could have spent the larger amount on time, despite the need.

ERNEST CARLEY, 95, of Carson, died Friday, July 31st, at home. Funeral services for ERNEST CARLEY will be 10-a.m. Friday, August 7th, at the Carson United Methodist Church, in Carson.  Loess Hills Funeral Home in Carson has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6th, with Masonic Rites services to begin at 6:45 p.m.
Burial will be in the Carson Cemetery. 

A memorial fund has been established.
