Perdue defends federal farm payments for trade disruption, Covid

Ag/Outdoor

September 4th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A new U-S-D-A estimate indicates federal payments will account for more than a third of farm income this year as the agency spends at least 37 billion dollars extra to make up for losses in the ag economy. During a news conference on a farm near Radcliffe, Iowa, yesterday (Thursday), U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue was asked if that level of government spending is sustainable.

“No farmer in the country wants to work for a government check,” Perdue said. But Perdue says the president promised farmers new federal payments when trade tensions with China escalated and commodity prices dropped.  “They’d much rather have crops or a check coming from the scales at the elevator than coming through the mailbox,” Perdue says, “but I can tell you one thing, that President Trump is committed to not to let China, through retaliation, interfere with that. He’s not going to allow Covid to interfere with that and that’s where these funds are coming from.”

In January, President Trump announced he’d reached “phase one” of a trade deal with China. It cut some U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, with the expectation that the Chinese would buy 80 billion dollars in agricultural products by the end of 2021. Perdue points to the announcement earlier this week that China had signed agreements to buy one-point-seven million metric tons of U.S. corn and 120-thousand tons of U.S. soybeans.

“They got off to a slow start, but it looks like to me that China’s trying to do what it can to fulfill those ag import obligations under phase one,” Perdue says. “…They’re got to keep their foot on the pedal all the way. We’ve got to have week-by-week good numbers, but they’ve been there the last few weeks.” Perdue visited an engineered wetland, a fish farm and two other agribusinesses during his trip to Iowa.

During remarks at a farm near Radcliffe, Perdue publicly signed a document so farmers in 42 Iowa counties who had crop or property damage from last month’s derecho may apply for emergency federal loans through the Farm Service Agency.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert’s 458-foot home run capped a second five-run inning of the night for Chicago as the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 11-6. Robert was one of three White Sox to homer in the contest, joining Edwin Encarnacion and Tim Anderson. The White Sox pulled within a half-game of the idle Cleveland Indians for the lead in the American League Central. They lead the third-place Twins by one game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — As college and professional sports teams resume or begin their seasons, hoping to allow at least some fans into their facilities, they are faced with the same question: How many can safely attend? It’s a question the Chiefs answered by settling on 22% of capacity for Arrowhead Stadium, where the Super Bowl champs will open the NFL season against Houston next week. But that seemingly random number is not random at all. Numerous factors went into settling on the roughly 17,000 fans, including input from local and state health officials, the layout of the stadium and the ability to properly conduct contact tracing should an outbreak occur.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Terence “Bud” Crawford is looking for a fight. The undefeated WBO welterweight champion has never fought less than twice in a calendar year as a professional. He faces the possibility of being idle all of 2020. The 32-year-old said he’s using the time off to rest his body and spend time with his family. He also continues to train. Crawford hasn’t had a fight since he stopped Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the ninth round at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is trying to line up a fight against Kell Brook before the year is over.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — OG Anunoby grabbed a crosscourt inbounds pass from Kyle Lowry and drained a 3-pointer at the horn to give the Toronto Raptors a 104-103 triumph over Boston. It came just a half-second after Daniel Theis dunked to give the Celtics a two-point lead. Lowry played virtually the whole way, finishing with 31 points, eight assists and six rebounds as the Raptors pulled within 2-1 in the NBA’s Eastern Conference semifinals.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Kawhi Leonard scored 29 points and the Los Angeles Clippers shot 57% from the field in a 120-97 trouncing of Denver in Game 1 of the NBA Western Conference semifinal series. The Clippers took charge in the second quarter, outscoring the Nuggets 38-20 to take a 69-51 lead. Paul George scored 19 points and Marcus Morris added 18 for Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams’ drive for her 24th major championship continues at the U.S. Open. The 38-year-old Williams has advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Margarita Gasparyan. Williams improved her career record to 20-0 in the second round at Flushing Meadows and will play Sloane Stephens in the next round.

Kron says the man eventually emerged from the home’s garage and pointed a rifle at officers. One officer fired two rounds, striking the man. He was taken to an Iowa City hospital. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A judge says she’ll try to rule next week on whether to block Gov. Kim Reynolds’ mandate for schools to return to in-person learning, despite the coronavirus pandemic. Judge Mary Chicchelly heard arguments in a lawsuit brought by the Iowa City school district and the Iowa State Education Association. She said that, barring “unforeseen circumstances,” she would issue a written ruling next week. Lawyers for the Iowa City district and the teachers’ union asked her to impose a temporary injunction that would allow local school boards to decide when it’s safe to reopen classrooms to students and teachers. Many school districts begin classes on Tuesday in Iowa, where the virus is spreading faster than almost any other state.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem got some extra air time on Fox News last week during the Republican National Convention, after the state ran a $819,000 taxpayer-funded ad promoting tourism. Purchasing the Fox News ad while millions of people tuned into the RNC was Noem’s idea, her spokesman Ian Fury said. In the 30-second ad narrated by the Republican governor, she describes how the state is “open for opportunity,” alluding to how she has leveraged her decision to forego coronavirus restrictions to attract tourists and businesses to the state.

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans (0-1) football team heads to Carroll on Friday night to face the Kuemper Catholic Knights (0-1) and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. Both teams are looking to break into the win column after facing tough top-ten ranked opponents in week one. The Trojans fell to the Underwood Eagles 39-0 and the Knights lost to South Central Calhoun 14-0. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said execution just needs to get sharper this week for his squad. Despite the lopsided scoreboard in week one Coach McDermott thought his defense played pretty well.

Coach McDermott expects Kuemper Catholic to be a hungry, tough opponent.

The Knights struggled to find offensive production in their opener as well with only 188 yards gained. Knights first-year head coach Ryan Steinkamp said he saw some good things from his team but they just need to sustain drives.

Coach Steinkamp said the Knights will need to play good assignment football on Friday night and be prepared to face a fast Trojan team.

You can hear more from both head coaches during our game coverage on Friday night. Catch Trojan Preview with Coach McDermott at 4:45 p.m. Our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? will air at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith with the call from Carroll Stadium on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com and you can watch the game as well on KJANTV.
