Branstad’s back on the campaign trail

News

October 12th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is back on the Iowa campaign trail. Branstad resigned as U.S. Ambassador to China. He and his wife, Chris, returned to Iowa LAST Monday after a little over three years and three months in the role. “Longer than the three previous ambassadors and frankly, we wanted to get back to Iowa,” Branstad says. “I wanted to get back to Iowa before it got too cold.” Branstad returned last Monday and his first campaign event was a rally with Joni Ernst in Carroll on Saturday. “I’m just really excited to be back and really proud to be part of the team,” Branstad said.

Branstad touted President Trump’s trade pact with China.  “It was a tough battle and it took a long time, but now we’re seeing record purchases of corn, pork, soybeans, beef,” Branstad said, “and that’s making a real difference.” The so-called “phase one” trade with was signed in January and, so far this year, China’s ag commodity purchases are about half of what China promised. During an interview with Radio Iowa and The Des Moines Register, Branstad discounted polls showing President Trump and Joe Biden tied in Iowa. “The only poll that counts is the one taken on Election Day. You’ve heard me say that before,” Branstad says. “The situation is a little different now because of so much early voting and all of that…I’m a big believer that you need to finish strong.”

Branstad’s oldest son, Eric, is senior advisor to Trump’s reelection campaign. Donald Trump, Junior is scheduled to campaign in Iowa Tuesday and President Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in Des Moines on Wednesday. The Iowa Democratic Party’s chairman denounced the idea, saying it’ll be led by a person who may still be contagious and the event might end up being a “super spreader” of Covid.

US Senate candidates on the trail this weekend

News

(Radio Iowa) – Republican Senator Joni Ernst hosted a motorcycle ride across the state this weekend, with rallies in five different cities. It started Saturday in Sioux City, then a stop in Carroll where many in the crowd were waving Trump flags. Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, made his first appearance after resigning as U.S. Ambassador to China. “Donald Trump, our great American president,” Branstad said, to cheers. “…I also want you to know that Joni Ernst was there to support the president all the way.” Ernst told reporter her fate isn’t tied to Trump’s and she’s running her own race. “I think we’re on a great path,” Ernst said. “I mean I feel the enthusiasm and the energy out there and that’s what’s going to take us over the finish line.”

On Sunday morning, seven-term Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Ernst greeted several dozen motorcyclists before Ernst led the group to stops in Cedar Rapids and Davenport. Grassley criticized the money being spent by outside groups touting Ernst’s opponent. “Joni and I have been a team now for six years,” Grassley said. “…We’ve got to re-elect Joni to keep the team in place.”

Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield campaigned in northern Iowa this weekend, touring a farm near Buffalo Center and visiting with small groups at stops in Estherville and Lake Mills. “We’re working hard in our campaign to follow public health guidelines…and encourage people to mask up,” she told Radio Iowa. Greenfield raised nearly 29-million dollars in the third quarter — an all-time record for an Iowa senate campaign “There’s a lot of excitement in this campaign,” Greenfield says. “…I stay focused on the basic issues. The things that really affect people’s lives, in places like this.” November 3rd, Election Day, is 22 days away.

Here is the latest sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Derek Carr threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, outplaying Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes along the way, and the Las Vegas Raiders nearly shut out the potent Kansas City offense in the second half to rally for a 40-32 victory that ended the Chiefs’ franchise-record 13-game winning streak. The Chiefs trailed 40-24 before a late TD pass, but Josh Jacobs ran for a first down and Carr sneaked for another on fourth-and-1 to clinch the Raiders’ first win at Arrowhead Stadium since October 2012. The Chiefs had won 28 of their last 30 games against the AFC West.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has quickly earned a reputation for pulling off the seemingly impossible, whether it’s a no-look pass or a 70-yard heave or merely leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory when all hope seems lost. But it was the Chiefs’ inability to execute the simple stuff that hurt them against the Las Vegas Raiders. They blew coverages, were penalized at the most inopportune times and were unable to get the kind of crazy plays late in the games that have bailed them out in the past.

SEATTLE (AP) — Russell Wilson capped a 94-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf on fourth-and-goal with 15 seconds left to give the Seattle Seahawks a 27-26 triumph over the Minnesota Vikings. Wilson finished 20 of 32 for 217 yards and three touchdowns as the Seahawks improved to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. Alexander Mattison rushed for a career-high 112 yards but was stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Seattle 6 with 1:57 left, setting the stage for yet another Wilson comeback.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sustained a dislocation and compound fracture of his right ankle during a 37-34 win over the New York Giants. Prescott has never missed a start in four-plus seasons with the Cowboys and was on track to have a career year until he suffered the injury late in the third quarter. Backup Andy Dalton led a drive that ended with Greg Zuerlein’s 34-yard field goal as time expired.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have won their 17th NBA championship with a 106-93 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 6. LeBron James delivered 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to secure his fourth career NBA title and the Lakers’ first in a decade. L.A. took command by outscoring the Heat, 36-16 in the second quarter to carry a 28-point lead into intermission.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Blake Snell worked the first five innings before four relievers completed a combined nine-hitter in the Tampa Bay Rays’ 2-1 win over Houston in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. Randy Arozarena (ah-rah-zah-RAY’-nah) tied it with a fourth-inning homer and Mike Zunino singled home the lead run in the fifth. Diego Castillo closed out the victory after getting Yuli Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) to ground into a double play to end the eighth inning.
