KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Le’Veon Bell once carried the ball a league-leading 321 times in a single season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He doesn’t figure to get nearly as many chances with the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s just fine with the two-time All-Pro running back, though. Bell has been the focal point of defenses for the majority of his career, whether that was in Pittsburgh or during his short stint with the New York Jets. But now Bell’s on a team with so much offensive firepower that he could only marvel while watching them beat the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. “I was just like,’ This is unbelievable,'” Bell said.

UNDATED (AP) — The game of the week in the Big Ten has No. 18 Michigan at No. 21 Minnesota on Saturday. The Wolverines’ last four seasons have ended with consecutive losses and fans are getting antsy as Jim Harbaugh enters his sixth year. Michigan is breaking in a new quarterback, presumably Joe Milton, in the Little Brown Jug game. Iowa will have a new quarterback for the first time in four years, with Spencer Petras making his starting debut on the road against Purdue. No. 5 Ohio State is a 26-point favorite for its home game against Nebraska.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 17 Iowa State is looking to improve to 4-0 in conference play for the first time in school history _ in any league, not only the Big 12. The Cyclones play at well-rested sixth-ranked Oklahoma State. The Cowboys, who are 2-0 in the Big 12, are coming off consecutive bye weeks after their scheduled open date was followed by their game last Saturday at Baylor being pushed back to December due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Bears program. The Bears are back to play at Texas. No. 20 Kansas State, the only other Big 12 team without a league loss, hosts instate rival Kansas.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A lawsuit says the son of a former University of Nebraska official is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy three years ago. The lawsuit filed Wednesday by the mother of the boy alleges that Jack Eichorst assaulted the victim at a sleepover at the Eichorsts’ home in October 2017. The Omaha World-Herald reports the lawsuit names Jack Eichorst and his parents. It seeks unspecified damages for emotional distress, pain and suffering of the alleged victim, as well reimbursement of medical and mental health counseling bills. Eichorst attorney Vince Powers says the allegations did not happen. Jack Eichorst was convicted of child pornography possession last year.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brandon Lowe (low) homered twice and Tampa Bay hurlers combined for 15 strikeouts in a 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lowe was hitting just .107 in 56 postseason at-bats before going deep in the first and fifth innings, helping the Rays even the World Series at a game apiece. Blake Snell no-hit the Dodgers for 4 2/3 innings but was lifted after allowing the next four hitters to reach base, preventing him from picking up the win.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A split Iowa Supreme Court is upholding a new Republican-backed law that will bar county elections commissioners from mailing absentee ballots this week to thousands of people who omitted information on their applications. The 4-3 ruling means voters who want to cast ballots by mail for the Nov. 3 election must complete their absentee ballot applications before Saturday’s deadline in order to qualify. Auditors will not be allowed to use the state’s voter registration system to fill in any blanks on submitted applications. Dissenting justices contend that the ruling will “likely cause thousands of voters to not receive their ballot in time to use it.”

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says her administration will try to convince federal auditors to allow its plan to spend $21 million in coronavirus relief funds on a long-planned information technology system. Reynolds says the state believes spending federal virus aid to purchase and implement a new accounting and human resources system for the executive branch is “an allowable expense.” State Auditor Rob Sand has said the use of federal funds for the Workday project is inappropriate. He warns that Iowa will be on the hook to repay $21 million to the federal government if it’s not diverted to an allowable use.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The number of Iowa residents dying from the coronavirus is quickly rising again after weeks of increasing hospitalizations and outbreaks at nursing homes. The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 31 new deaths from the virus Wednesday, the most confirmed in a 24-hour period since the beginning of the pandemic. That does not mean that 31 people died in one day. Instead, it means that the state received 31 new reports of confirmed COVID—19 deaths through medical examiners and death certificates. Many of the deaths happened a few or several days ago.

Dense Fog Advisory until 11-a.m. (10/22)

The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 11-a.m. for the following area Counties: Cass-Adair-Adams-Dallas-Guthrie-Pottawattamie-Madison-Mills-Montgomery-Union-Fremont-Page-Taylor and Ringgold.

  • Visibility in the fog will drop to one-quarter of a mile or less.
  • If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

Stanton races past CAM to reach Regional Semifinals

The Stanton Viqueens volleyball team ripped off some big runs and ran away from the CAM Cougars in a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday night in Stanton. The Viqueens jumped out to a 6-1 advantage to begin the first set but CAM was able to battle back and eventually knot things up at 13 points apiece. Then the Viqueens ripped off the final 12 points of the set and won the opener 25-13.

Stanton then grabbed another early lead in the 2nd and used a pair of five point runs to take control of the set and win 25-15. Confidence seemed to fade at that point for the Cougars and they continued to make mistakes throughout the third and final set. Stanton scored the first 12 points of the set and pulled away for a 25-7 win to seal their victory.

Tara Peterson and Jenna Stephens were strong all night long at the net for the Viqueens. Stanton improved to 24-5 on the season and advance on to the 1A Region 4 Semifinals against Grand View Christian on Monday. That match is set to be played at Orient-Macksburg Community School with a 7:00 p.m. first serve Monday.

Zoey Baylor led the Cougars with 3 blocks and a kill on the night. CAM has their season come to a close with a record of 22-6.

Halloween still on for Oct. 31st in Atlantic

While some cities, including Audubon, have cancelled Halloween this year over fears of spreading the Coronavirus, Atlantic still plans to hold trick-or-treating on Oct. 31st, from 4:30-until 6-p.m.  Atlantic Mayor Dave Jones said during Wednesday’s City Council meeting, things will be a little different this year, however, than in years past.

(Updated) Trick-or-Treating in the downtown business district is from 2-until 4-p.m., Oct. 31st.  In other business, the Atlantic City Council passed by a vote of five-to two, the second reading of an Ordinance amending the City’s Code of Ordinances, with regard to the expansion of a two-way stop at 22nd and Olive to a four-way, and from a two-way stop at 32nd and Chestnut, to a three-way stop. The proposed changes is to encourage traffic to slow down before entering the city. Councilpersons Casady and Somers voted against the measure.

Atlantic residents Dale Gross and Dale Retallic spoke out against the plan, which the Mayor contends will prevent accidents from happening at those intersections. Gross said there’s no evidence or records he could find, of 22nd and Olive being a hot spot for accidents. He says the 35 mile per hour speed limit is enough to prevent any crashes.

Retallic reiterated his statement from the last Council meeting two weeks ago, in agreeing that if the City’s goal is to reduce speeding, increase the number of tickets, and/or install speed bumps. Councilman Pat McCurdy who voted to approve the second reading, said he’s spoken with four people who live in the area are in favor of the 4-way stop at 22nd and Olive, because of what is perceived to be increased truck traffic, especially from the new rock quarry. McCurdy also pointed out that snow plows have a tendency to knock out speed bumps. The third and final reading of the ordinance will take place in two weeks.

In other business, the Atlantic City Council, Wednesday, approved the third and final reading of an Ordinance vacating and conveying an alley between Hemlock and Sycamore Streets, south of E. 18th Street. The lot will be divided equally among the four adjacent property owners. The also passed a Resolution setting November 4th as the date for a Public Hearing on vacating a Right of Way for a stub (non-connecting) section of road, just east of 9th and Plum Streets.

Atlantic’s Becker, Berg, and McCreedy advance to State Cross Country

Trojan LogoAtlantic will send three runners to the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge next Friday. The Trojans competed at the Winterset State Qualifying Meet site on Wednesday night. Both boys and girls teams finished in 5th place.

In the boys race Craig Alan Becker finished 4th overall with a time of 16:16 and Zane Berg finished 10th with a time of 16:58. Both advance on to the State Meet with their Top-15 finishes. Nate Mueller of ADM was the overall champion and Aiden Ramsey of Dallas Center-Grimes was runner-up.

In the girls race Taylor McCreedy finished 4th in a time of 19:40. Geneva Timmermann of ADM was the champion and Kami Smith of Dallas Center-Grimes was runner-up.

BERNICE BISSEN, 94, of Harlan, died Wed., Oct. 21st, at the Elm Crest Assisted Living Facility. A Private Family Mass of Christian Burial for BERNICE BISSEN will be held Saturday, Oct. 24th, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan is assisting the family.

Burial is in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Defiance.

BERNICE BISSEN is survived by:
Her daughters – Betty (Gail) Foxhoven, of Earling, & Barb Doran, of Dallas, TX.
Her son – Bill Bissen, of Defiance.
Her sister – Elaine Staley of Denison
Her brothers – Joe Ray (Loretta) Kenkel ,of Earling, & George (Bonnie) Kenkel, of Harlan.
6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

MARDYL ROSE CARLSON, 89, of the Lewis/Lyman areas, died Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at the Hansen House in Harlan. A Memorial service for MARDYL CARLSON will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Oct. 27th, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, south of Lyman. Rieken-Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold has the arrangements.

An open viewing will be held at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Monday, October 26, 2020, from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM. The family will not be present at any specific time.

A Private family interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery.

Her sons – Jeff Carlson, of Griswold, and Jerry (Karen) Carlson, of Atlantic.

1 step-granddaughter, 4 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
