Cardinals recall two pitchers from Triple-A

Sports

May 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals attempted to bolster their pitching staff Tuesday by recalling left-hander Sam Freeman and right-hander Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Memphis. Freeman, 26, has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Cardinals, appearing in 37 games. He was 0-1 with a 3.78 ERA in 13 games for Memphis, though he had allowed just two earned runs over his last 10 appearances.

Rondon, also 26, will be looking to make his Major League debut after spending the past eight seasons in the minors. He was 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in 11 games at Memphis. The Cardinals optioned reliever Eric Fornataro to Memphis and placed Tyler Lyons on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. Lyons started Monday’s game with the Chicago Cubs and allowed seven runs in two innings.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Pinch-hitter Greg Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the 12th inning, sending the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs 4-3 Tuesday night. Jhonny Peralta led off the 12th with a single for his third hit. Justin Grimm retired Matt Holliday on a popup, but walks to Allen Craig and Yadier Molina loaded the bases for Garcia.

Seth Maness tossed a scoreless 12th for the win. Both teams used seven pitchers. Trailing 3-2 going into the ninth, Chicago rallied to tie it off closer Trevor Rosenthal on Emilio Bonifacio’s RBI single with two outs.

NASCAR-owned Iowa Speedway opens season on Sunday

Sports

May 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Speedway is set to reopen just six months after being bought by NASCAR. New president Jimmy Small is among those eager to see how Sunday’s Nationwide race will set the tone for the future of the short track. NASCAR took the rare step of purchasing the track for a reported $10 million in November.

The 28-year-old Small is the third person to run the Iowa Speedway in less than three years. He inherited a track that has remained popular with fans and drivers despite patches of instability. NASCAR plans to kick start the track’s new era this weekend with country music duo Montgomery Gentry in concert Saturday night after the K&N Pro Series race.

Points leader Chase Elliott, Trevor Bayne and Ty Dillon headline the list of drivers.

Lake homers, drives in 6, Cubs rout Cardinals 17-5

Sports

May 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Junior Lake homered, doubled twice and drove in six runs as the Chicago Cubs broke loose, routing St. Louis 17-5 Monday night and forcing the Cardinals to finish with infielder Daniel Descalso as a relief pitcher. The Cubs had totaled just four runs while getting swept in a three-game series at Atlanta over the weekend, and had lost seven of eight overall. Chicago has the worst record in the league at 13-24, but is 4-3 against the defending NL champions.

The Cubs hit for the cycle in the first five batters — Emilio Bonifacio doubled, Anthony Rizzo singled, Starlin Castro tripled and Mike Olt’s two-run homer capped a four-run first inning. Bonifacio had four of Chicago’s 20 hits and scored five runs, once on a play overturned by video review.

Descalso made his first pro pitching appearance and retired the only batter he faced, getting Olt on a fly ball.

Chiefs pick med student in sixth round of draft

May 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There are few players in the NFL draft who have a better fallback plan than Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, the offensive tackle taken by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round. After all, he only needs one more year of medical school before he becomes Doc Larry.

The 23-year-old Canadian from McGill University is planning to put those career aspirations on hold to play football for the Chiefs. He was supposed to fly to Kansas City this week and immerse himself in an orientation program, with a rookie minicamp beginning May 24.

Duvernay-Tardif first turned heads at the East-West Shrine Game, and then impressed the Chiefs enough at a personal pro day that they drafted him on Saturday.
