ST. LOUIS (AP) — Creighton, which has four starters back from a team that made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament, was a near-unanimous choice to win the Missouri Valley championship. Preseason All-American Doug McDermott leads the way for the Bluejays, who received 398 of a possible 400 points in a poll of league coaches, sports information directors and media released Monday. McDermott was conference player of the year last season after shooting 63 percent overall and 48.6 percent from 3-point range. Illinois State was picked to finish second, followed by Northern Iowa, defending champion Wichita State and Evansville. Drake was sixth, followed by Indiana State, Missouri State, Bradley and Southern Illinois.
Joining McDermott on the preseason all-conference team were Colt Ryan of Evansville, Jackie Carmichael of Illinois State, Jake Odum of Indiana State and Ben Simons of Drake.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Several corporate sponsors stepped up to help save the San Diego Chargers the embarrassment of having Thursday night’s NFL Network game against the Kansas City Chiefs blacked out locally. The Chargers said the sponsors, including the local CBS affiliate, guaranteed the purchase of enough tickets to lift the local television blackout. Those tickets will be donated to local military bases and military hospitals. The team wouldn’t say how many tickets had to be sold by the deadline of 5:20 p.m. Monday, but it was believed to be approximately 10,000. The NFL Network began showing Thursday night games in 2006 and has never had one blacked out locally. The Chargers have had one game blacked out this season, a loss to Atlanta on Sept. 23. San Diego (3-4) has lost three straight games, including two in which it blew double-digit leads in the second half. Kansas City is 1-6.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The buzz surrounding Iowa State’s ever-changing quarterback situation has obscured the most important development yet for the Cyclones. They’ve played excellent defense so far. Iowa State (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) is one win shy of its third bowl bid in four years heading into Saturday’s game against Oklahoma (5-2, 3-1) because it has played strong defense in a league full of offense.
The Cyclones are allowing 19.8 points per game, good for third in the Big 12. Coach Paul Rhoads says the Cyclones will work hard to pick up the slack after linebacker Jake Knott was lost for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa re-energized its weary fan base last season with 18 wins and a spot in the NIT. The optimistic Hawkeyes are hoping that this will be the year they return to the NCAA tournament. This is the most anticipated season in years at Iowa, which hasn’t won 20 games or reached the NCAA tournament since its infamous first-round exit in 2006.
The Hawkeyes have a promising core of emerging players like Devyn Marble and Aaron White that will be augmented by a standout freshman class. It includes a pair of likely starters in center Adam Woodbury and point guard Mike Gesell. Iowa (18-17, 8-10 Big Ten in 2011-12) opens its season on Nov. 9 against Texas Pan-American.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State senior linebacker Jake Knott is likely out for the season with a torn left shoulder. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads says Knott, the reigning Big 12 defensive player of the week and a first-team All-Big 12 pick in 2011, had surgery Monday in Chicago. Rhoads says Knott might make it back for a potential bowl game. But the Cyclones won’t know more until later in the week. Knott injured his shoulder on Oct. 20 against Oklahoma State, but he returned and had 11 tackles and forced a fumble in Iowa State’s 35-21 win on Saturday over Baylor. Rhoads says Knott was a selfless team player whose leadership will be missed.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn is being evaluated for a possible concussion and his status for Thursday night’s game at San Diego remains uncertain. Coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that Quinn will start against the Chargers if he’s cleared to play. Otherwise, Matt Cassel will be back under center for the Chiefs.
Quinn was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday’s 26-16 loss to the Oakland Raiders, though it’s unclear when the injury occurred. He was sacked by Rolando McClain late in the first quarter and then took another shot while floating a pass that was picked by Matt Giordano.
Crennel said that Quinn wasn’t at the practice facility Monday while he underwent tests, and Cassel would run the first-team offense during a walk-through practice.
