Joens’ double-double leads Cyclones over Longwood

AMES, Iowa – No. 14 Iowa State (8-1) got back on the winning track, taking down Longwood (3-5) 94-56 Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The visiting Lancers were briefly able to respond to ISU’s early lead, but a big run to close out the first quarter gave the home Cyclones a double-figure lead. The lead would get to as much as 41 during the contest, as Iowa State began its five-game homestand with an eighth win on the season.

Iowa State had five in double figures, with both Joens sisters recording double-doubles. Aubrey Joens set a new career-high with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including six 3-pointers while grabbing a career-best 14 rebounds for her second career double-double. Ashley Joens, in the 100th game of her ISU career, got 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Emily Ryan tied her season-best with 13 points, while also dishing out five assists and grabbing four steals. Lexi Donarski also notched 13 points (her fourth-straight game in double figures), while Beatriz Jordão had one of her best days as a Cyclone, finishing with a season-best 14 points and tying her career-high with four blocks.

Iowa State is back in Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday for the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series meeting with Iowa. Tip between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes will be at 6 p.m., with ESPNU televising the contest.

Iowa DNR releases name of hunting incident fatality in Marion County

MARION COUNTY, Iowa – Authorities have identified 37-year-old Nathan Allen Sharpnack, of Winterset, as the victim in a fatal hunting incident that occurred in Marion County on Saturday.  According to authorities, Sharpnack was participating in a deer drive on the Whitebreast Arm of Lake Red Rock with a large group of hunters when he was fatally struck in the torso.

The investigation into the hunting related shooting is ongoing at this time.

An autopsy is pending on Sharpnack at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.

Radio Luminary Show today on KJAN

Tune in to hear from those who have helped battle cancer and have fought cancer here within the Cass County area. We will remember those we’ve lost and celebrate those who are fighting. Inspirational music will be part of the show.

NE man arrested Sunday morning in Montgomery County

(Elliott, Iowa) – A traffic stop southwest of Elliott at Highway 48 and 120th Street early this Sunday) morning, resulted in an arrest. According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies arrested 33-year old Lalo Guadalupe Walker, of Omaha, on a felony Theft warrant out of Nebraska. Walker was transported to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and held, pending extradition to Nebraska.

MARY ELLEN [Kluever] LOWDER, 61, of Atlantic, died Friday, Dec. 3rd, at home. Funeral services for MARY ELLEN [Kluever] LOWDER will be held 1-p.m. Wed., Dec. 8th, at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. The service will be recorded and made available on the funeral home’s website by the end of the day, Thursday.

Visitation with the family is on Tuesday, from 6-until 8-p.m., at the funeral home.; Online condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Burial is in the Atlantic Cemetery w/Military Honors by the Atlantic Color Guard.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation to causes that were close to Mary Ellen’s heart.

MARY ELLEN LOWDER is survived by:

Her daughters – Chevonne (Jason) Karol, and Dessa (Wesley) Goodlett.

Her sons – Carl “CJ” James Soglin, and Roy Wayne Lowder, II.

and 12 grandchildren.

Michigan rolls past Iowa in Big Ten Title Game

The Michigan Wolverines hit on two big plays in the first half to build a lead and kept building on it in the second half for a 42-3 win over Iowa in the Big Ten Championship. The Wolverines were dominate in their first appearance in the game and will move on to the College Football Playoff.

Blake Corum started the scoring with a 67 yard touchdown run down the right sideline with 6:38 left in the first quarter.A little over a minute of gametime later Roman Wilson hauled in a trick play pass from Donovan Edwards for 75 yards and a score to put Michigan up 14-0. Iowa got a 22 yard field goal from Caleb Shudak to make it 14-3 at half.

Hassan Haskins scored on two short runs, Erick All hauled in a one handed td catch, and Donovan Edwards added the exclamation point score with 1:25 left. The Wolverines outgained the Hawkeyes 461-279 yards.

Michigan improved to 12-1 on the season and will now await their seeding in the CFP on Sunday.

Iowa falls to 10-3 on the year and will await their bowl destination on Sunday afternoon.

Iowa State picks up road win over Creighton

Iowa State picked up a win in their first true road test of the season 64-58 over Creighton on Saturday night in Omaha. Caleb Grill was a huge spark of the bench for the Cyclones with 16 points including 4-4 from three point range.

Creighton led by as many as 9 in the first half before Iowa State rallied to tie it at half on one of Grill’s threes as time expired. The Cyclones then built a lead up to as many as 9 in the second half and held of the Jays down the stretch.

Ryan Hawkins had his beast game so far at Creighton with 25 points and 5 rebounds. Ryan Nembhard added 10. Creighton falls to 7-2 on the season. Creighton hosts BYU next Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Iowa State also got 12 points from Izaiah Brockington in the second half as the Cyclones improved to 8-0. ISU now preps to host the Cy-Hawk game against Iowa on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m.
