Red Oak woman injured after being ejected from motorcycle in crash

A woman from Red Oak suffered suspected serious injuries during a car vs. motorcyle accident on Friday afternoon. Red Oak Police were called to the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North 4th Street in Red Oak at 3:36 p.m. for the accident.

It was determined that a 2009 Honda Accord driven by 18-year-old Skylar Kathryn McGarry of Omaha was traveling southbound in the wrong direction of the one way 400 block of North 4th Street. McGarry failed to stop at the intersection with East Washington Avenue and struck an eastbound 2015 Triumph T Bird Storm motorcycle driven by 50-year-old Scott Allen Demont of Red Oak. Demont was taken to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Demont’s passenger 57-year-old Norma Jean Demont was ejected from the bike during the crash and suffered suspected serious injuries. Norma Jean Demont was treated by Red Oak Rescue at the scene and then airlifted to UNMC in Omaha. McGarry and her passenger in the car were uninjured.

McGarry was cited for Failure to Yield on the right at an uncontrolled intersection. Damage to the Accord was estimated at $8,000 damage to the motorcycle was estimated at $15,000.

The Red Oak Police Department was assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Red Oak Fire Department.

Public Notice of a Special Election for District 1 Montgomery County Board of Supervisor

Montgomery County Auditor & Commissioner of Elections, Stephanie Burke, Friday, said that on Friday, November 6, 2020, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisor’s held a special meeting to call for a Special Election for District 1 Montgomery County Board of Supervisor. Burke said “There will be a Special Election held on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 to fill the vacancy of District 1 Montgomery County Board of Supervisor.”

In accordance with Iowa Code, the citizens of Montgomery County, requested a special election to fill the vacancy by filing a petition with the Montgomery County Auditor containing 80signatures of eligible electors within 14 days after the appointment was made.The seat will go on the Special Election Ballot as Board of Supervisors District 1 –To Fill A Vacancy.

The winner on December 15, 2020 is elected for the remainder of the term. The seat will be up for election in 2022 cycle. Delegates to the party’s county convention (Democratic and Republican) who represent District 1, who shall be convened as appropriate by the county chairperson in accordance with the Iowa Code.

Candidates will need to file a convention certificate and an affidavit of candidacy. Candidates may also file a nomination by petition with at least 15 signatures from eligible electors in District 1 and an affidavit of candidacy.Filing deadline is November 20, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. at the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office.

Police seek suspect in Sioux City apartment complex shooting

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police have identified a suspect in the weekend shooting of a man at an apartment complex in Iowa. The the Sioux City Journal reports that police said Friday that they have a warrant for the arrest of 36-year-old Roderick D. Banks of Sioux City on a charge of first-degree murder. He is wanted in Sunday’s shooting of Solomon Blackbird at Park Place Apartments near Grandview Park.

Officers found Blackbird suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Sioux City Police Department says the shooting may have been motivated by a drug deal between the two men.

 

Virus outbreak infects half of inmates at Anamosa prison

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa prison officials reported a coronavirus outbreak has infected nearly half of the inmates at an Iowa prison in Anamosa. Cord Overton, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Corrections, said Friday that testing this week revealed 476 inmates among 985 at the prison tested positive for the virus.

A report provided by the department indicates 37 staff members also tested positive. Across the nine institutions the department manages, 601 inmates are currently infected as of Friday afternoon.

 

Traer man sentenced to prison on child porn charge

(Radio Iowa) – A man who distributed child porn videos online will spend more than twenty years in federal prison. Thirty-one-year-old Kelby Fowler of Traer pleaded guilty to distribution and possession of child pornography. Fowler admitted he distributed and possessed child pornography, including a depiction of a minor who was under 12 Prosecutors say Fowler possessed multiple videos showing children being sexually assaulted or raped.

In an interview with law enforcement, Fowler also admitted to previously sexually assaulting a young child for whom he babysat. Fowler was sentenced to 252 months in federal prison.

Iowa hospital questioned about releasing 97-year-old woman

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The family of a 97-year-old Iowa woman who died of the coronavirus is questioning why a Davenport hospital released her while she was still sick and did not inform her family that she had been sent home. The Quad-City Times reports that Helen Lowery died two days after she was found unconscious in a chair in her apartment on Oct. 21 by a maintenance worker.

Grandson Michael Lowery says her family had no idea she had been sent home, even though he had asked to be informed. A hospital spokesman did not immediately return phone and email messages seeking comment.

 

NE Iowa woman shot by her 2-year-old

(Radio Iowa) – Authorities say a woman was accidently shot by her two-year old child in Dyersville on Wednesday night. Dyersville police say a 911 call came in around 6:15 pm about a shooting that happened on 4th Avenue Northeast. Authorities say a 21-year-old woman was accidentally shot by her child with a handgun that was left unsecured. The woman was transported to Finley Hospital in Dubuque and later airlifted to Iowa City.

Authorities have not released her name and her condition was not available. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

Ringgold County woman injured in Union County crash

A woman from Ringgold County suffered suspected minor, non-incapacitating injuries last Sunday morning, during a rollover accident in Union County. The Union County Sheriff’s Office reports 19-year old Autumn Rose Marie St. Onge, of Diagonal, was driving a 2007 Kia Sorento northbound on P-27/The High and Dry Road at around 6:40-a.m., when an animal ran in front of her vehicle.

When St. Onge swerved to miss the animal, she over-corrected and lost control, causing the car to roll over on the road.  The car came to rest on its wheels, in the west ditch. St. Onge was transported by EMS Ground to the Greater Regional Medical Center, in Creston.  The vehicle was a total loss ($5,000 damage). No citations were issued.

2 thefts reported in Union County

(12-pm 11/6) – The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Friday (today), said a West Des Moines man reported on Nov. 2nd, that sometime recently, someone broke into his machine shed in rural Union County, by damaging a window. The thief or thieves took several items, including: An Indestro wrench set; SK ½” drive socket set; Two KT grinder wheels; an axe; a lighter; a 50’ extension cord, and a tub of rags. Estimated value of the damage and items taken is $380.

And, a man from Shannon City reported to the Union County Sheriff’s Office on November 4th, that sometime in last two days, someone damaged the door to his shed and took miscellaneous tools, DeWalt battery, and Napa jump starter. The items were valued at $500 altogether.

Atlantic Parks and Rec offers Turkey Hunt..well, sort of

Bryant Rasmussen and his crew with the Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department are offering you a chance to hunt for turkeys…but not real ones. Rasmussen says “This thanksgiving, we are extremely thankful for this wonderful community we have. Between our projects, people rallying to find vandals, and the #StrongAsSteel supporters, we decided it’s time for us to give a little something back.” This year, he says, “We are doing a Turkey Hunt.” They’ve placed 10 wood turkeys hidden around the parks, and if you can find all 10, Parks and Rec will put your name into a drawing for a free Thanksgiving Turkey. The hunt is going on from now (Nov. 6th) through November 22nd.
