Pate predicts preliminary election results in Iowa ‘before 10 o’clock tonight’

News

November 3rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Secretary of State Paul Pate says his survey of county auditors indicates voter turn-out today (Tuesday) is pretty strong — and he says there’s no doubt Iowa will set a significant record for voter participation this year after the massive number of early ballots that were cast. “Most certainly with over 996,970 absentee ballots in as of yesterday — clearly we’ll be over a million on that side alone and then you haven’t seen a dip today as far as the turnout,” Pate says.

“Usually you have highs and lows. Early in the morning — a lot of voters, then it kind of dips and then you come back up for lunch, but it’s stayed consistent.” Pate says some of the best news he’s gotten today is that election officials in Iowa’s largest counties were able to tabulate all the absentee ballots that were delivered to the county auditors’ offices by the close of business Monday.

“Of course they have new ones that might be straggling in, but the big one, the big lift is pretty much all done in Scott County and Polk County,” Pate says. “And a lot of the other smaller counties have all reported all of theirs are counted as well.” None of those results will be announced until after the polls close at 9 p.m., but Pate says getting a million absentee ballots tabulated allays fears about delayed results.

“It takes away some of that concern people had about: ‘Will we have the results tonight?’ Well, clearly we will,” Pate says. “When you have the biggest counties that have already tabulated theirs, it’s a pretty good sign because in smaller counties, their lift is a little easier to attain and so I’m pretty confident they’ll all have their tallies done, so before 10 o’clock tonight, we’ll have those preliminary results.”

In 2012, one-million-589-thousand ballots were cast in the state, which is the current and, according to Pate, about to be broken voter turn-out record.

Gov. Reynolds announces $28 million in direct relief to hospitals, local health departments

News

November 3rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds announced today (Tuesday), that she is allocating an additional $28 million in direct relief to Iowa’s hospitals and local county health departments to help manage increased needs due to COVID-19. The funding comes from the $1.25 billion in federal CARES Act funds allocated to the state.

“As COVID-19 continues to impact Iowans, it is putting strain on both staffing at our hospitals as well as local public health departments,” Gov. Reynolds said. “These added funds will provide much-needed relief to hospitals to support their staffing needs in this critical time. They will also support Iowa’s county health departments, which are facing continued and ongoing increases in workload.”

Of the direct relief announced today, $25 million will be allocated to hospitals to address staffing needs. The funds will be allocated prorated based on average hospital census over the months of September and OctoberAn additional $3 million will be distributed to local county health departments based on a per capita basis.

“All across the northern United States, we are seeing a consistent uptick in new cases of COVID-19,” said Gov. Reynolds. “It’s especially important that Iowans take every precaution possible to slow the community spread of COVID-19, whether that means wearing a mask in public, social distancing or simply staying home. We all need to do our part to curb that spread.”
