January 31st, 2021 by Ric Hanson

Barring another postponement due to the spread of the cornonavirus, RAGBRAI 2021 will take place pretty much along the same route it would have taken in 2020. Organizers of the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa say the ride will take place between July 25 and July 31. The 2021 Route is 426 miles and 11,481 feet of climb making it the 16th flattest in RAGBRAI History.

On Saturday, organizers said it would be the same Le Mars to Clinton route that was scheduled for 2020. However, there are two changes. The ride will go to Sac City and Dewitt instead of Storm Lake and Maquoketa for overnights.

The ride will start in Le Mars and go to Sac City, Fort Dodge, Iowa Falls, Waterloo, Anamosa, Dewitt and Clinton. The weeklong ride costs $175, but non-riders can register for $35, and for riders to get day passes it’s $30.

Iowa lawmaker blames lack of House rules for virus infection

News

January 31st, 2021 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Democratic state lawmaker says she has tested positive for COVID-19 and thinks she was infected with the virus at the Iowa Capitol, where Republicans have refused to mandate masks or require people to disclose positive cases. The announcement by Rep. Amy Nielsen of North Liberty on Saturday night marked the first confirmed case among legislators, but there have been three other positive cases among people associated in the House since the legislative session began three weeks ago.

One of those additional cases was announced by the House’s chief clerk Saturday. House Speaker Pat Grassley says he cannot force members to wear masks. House rules do require men to wear a tie and jacket when in session and blue jeans are prohibited.

Iowa reported a record 250 deaths linked to the coronavirus Sunday, which is the biggest one-day increase the state has recorded. The state reported 4,901 deaths linked to COVID-19 on Sunday morning. That was 250 more than what the state reported Saturday, and the figure is significantly higher than the average of 23.43 deaths reported per day over the past week. But the 250 deaths reported Sunday didn’t occur within the last 24 hours.

One of the Covid deaths recorded on Sunday occurred on October 15th and many happened in November and December and early January, but were just included in the latest batch of data the Centers for Disease Control sent the state. State officials say in some instances, it takes time for the National Center for Health Statistics to confirm a death is caused by or related to Covid.

There were six additional deaths reported in Pottawattamie County, two more in Guthrie, Madison, Montgomery and Union Counties, and one more death in each of Cass and Shelby Counties.

The IDPH says 4,446 of the deaths were attributed to Underlying Cause, and COVID was a contributing factor to 459 deaths. Long-Term Care (LTC) deaths make up for 2,007 of the total deaths.

The Iowa DPH reports there are 55 COVID-19 outbreaks among Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities in the state. Those facilities  account for 1,629 of Iowa’s current positive cases. Health officials say 915 LTC patients have recovered.

Iowa DPH today reports 358 persons are hospitalized with COVID symptoms or condition. Officials say 94 patients are in intensive care units, 50 COVID patients were admitted to hospitals over the 24-hours, and there are 29 people are on a ventilator.  In RMCC Region 4 (Western/southwest Iowa hospitals): 27 are hospitalized w/Covid; 10 are in an ICU; two people were admitted since Saturday, and two people are on a ventilator.

Iowa’s average reported 14-day positivity rate is 9.9%. The past 7-day average is 7.6%.  Of the state’s confirmed cases, 281,524 Iowans recovered. According to the Iowa DPH vaccination dashboard, 236,608 Iowans have received doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The dashboard reports that 132,466 individuals received their first of the vaccine, while 58,183 have completed vaccination. Vaccination data for each county can be found here.

IDPH Launches Vaccine Dashboard and Provider Locator Tool

News

January 30th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Des Moines, IA) The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announces the launch of two new features on the state’s COVID-19 website. A vaccine administration dashboard and vaccine provider locator tool deliver a statewide view of the COVID-19 vaccine effort in Iowa.

Vaccine Administration Dashboard

The dashboard includes data visualizations which include key metrics such as:

  • Number of individuals who have received one dose or both doses
  • Total doses administered by recipient county of residence and by provider county
  • Administration rates by age group, sex, race, and ethnicity

Vaccine Provider Map

Vaccine remains in very short supply. As vaccine supply increases, this tool makes finding local vaccine provider information easily accessible to Iowans. Each provider included manages their own vaccine information and scheduling. We are working with vaccine providers to update websites and phone numbers. Not all vaccine providers listed on this website will have vaccines at this time, as supply remains limited. Please check the facility website before calling.

Updated Allocation Information

After meeting with the Biden Administration this week, and reviewing the current allocation cadence, IDPH has accelerated the timetable to allow for an increase in allocations. Beginning the week of February 1, and continuing through the week of February 15, the state will receive the below allocations (1st Dose) weekly:

  • 19,500 of Pfizer
  • 25,800 of Moderna

IDPH also learned this week that approximately 64,000 doses of vaccine, originally allocated to the Long-Term Care Pharmacy Partnership Program, can be redistributed to the state’s priority populations. These doses will be sent directly to a limited number of stores to vaccinate individuals 65 years and older. We will provide additional information soon.

Phase 1B which includes, persons aged 65 years and over, or tiered populations vulnerable to high risk of exposure or severity of illness, begins on Monday, February 1. Due to the limited supply of vaccines, it will take the State of Iowa many weeks to reach all individuals in Phase 1B before moving to the next Phase, which will include persons under the age of 65 with health conditions at an increased risk of severe illness.

There continues to be a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine in Iowa. We encourage Iowans to remain patient as more vaccine arrives in the weeks and months ahead. It is also critical to continue practicing the mitigation measures that can slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

  • Wear a mask or face covering
  • Practice social distancing with those outside your household
  • Clean your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Stay home if you feel sick
  • Get tested if you are exposed to, or have symptoms of COVID-19
