Harry Hillaker, Iowa’s state climatologist for the past three decades, is stepping down this week. “March 22 will be my last day in the office and basically it’s been, gosh, almost 37 years I’ve been working in this office,” Hillaker said. The state climatologist monitors weather activity to compile monthly and annual reports about precipitation totals, shifts in temperatures, and other climate-related data. Iowa’s only other state climatologist, Paul Waite, hired Hillaker. “He hired me to do a little, three-month long research grant,” Hillaker said. “It’s almost 37 years later and I’m still here. That research grant led to one thing and then another, and then another, and I’ve been here all that time.”
Waite was Iowa’s state climatologist from 1976 to 1988, when Hillaker took the job. Hillaker plans to do some traveling, but will keep Iowa as his home in retirement. He’s looking forward to digging deeper into the state’s historical weather data. “There is still a lot of work to be done with that,” Hillaker said. “There’s a lot of stuff I’d like to do that I never had time to do with the regular job, so I’m hoping to do some of that with retirement.” The state climatologist’s office is part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture.

A band of precipitation is moving through the area through the early afternoon. Temperatures have fallen at or below freezing under this precipitation and has led to some icing on cars and other elevated surfaces. Road temperatures have remained at or above freezing and so far no icing on roadways has been reported. However, local icing on roadways and walkways is possible, especially in areas that are typically shaded during the daytime and where subsoil temperatures have not warmed as much as other areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a “Red Flag Warning,” for the southwest corner of Iowa. The warning currently affects Fremont and Page Counties, where potentially dangerous fire weather conditions will exist this afternoon. The warning is in effect from 1-p.m. today until 7-p.m.
Gusty southwest winds (at 15-to 25-mph) combined with low relative humidity values and dry fuels, will result in dangerous fire weather conditions across parts of southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa this afternoon. As temperatures climb well into the 60s today, humidity levels will drop below 20 percent. These low relative humidity values, along with southwest winds gusting to 25 mph, will make any fires that develop difficult to control.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
