Griswold Volleyball Looks to Reload After Losing Nine in Offseason

Sports

August 19th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Griswold Volleyball team will feature many new faces in new positions after graduating nine seniors in the offseason. Head Coach Jody Rossell says the summer conditioning program was figuring out what kind of team they would like to be this fall.

For the Tigers, the first week of practice was about trying out new schemes, formations and lineups to see what works best.

Griswold is seeking a fourth-consecutive winning season and will look to lone Senior Kate Tischer to fall into the leader roll.

Rossell says playing in the Corner Conference will speed up the potential growing pains they may have.

The Tigers compete in several scrimmages leading up to the 2025 regular season opener Tuesday, August 26th against Southwest Valley.

Tarasco Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Sports

August 19th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa soccer freshman Liana Tarasco was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the Big Ten conference announced on Tuesday.

Tarasco earns the award after netting her first career goal in Iowa’s, 3-2, victory over No. 6 Arkansas last week. Tarasco was awarded a penalty kick after a handball was called and then scored off a deflection. The true freshman’s goal in the seventh minute gave the Hawkeyes an, 1-0, lead. Iowa would hold the lead for the rest of the game.

Tarasco becomes the first Hawkeye to win the award since Berit Parten, who did it twice last season. The Montreal, Canada native becomes the sixth player in head coach Dave DiIanni’s tenure and the 10th Hawkeye in program history to win the award.

Tarasco was named a Big Ten Player to watch this season after spending time on the Canadian National Team.

No. 7 Iowa is back in action Thursday night when they host No. 16 TCU in their season opener. The match is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. (CT) and will broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

Becht on Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List

Sports

August 19th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list Tuesday, presented annually to the top upperclassman quarterback who is on track to graduate with their class.

Becht was among the top arms in the country last season with 3,505 passing yards, which ranked No. 11 nationally. He threw for 25 touchdowns and added 318 yards and eight scores on the ground.

His on-field play directly translated to the win column as he led Iowa State to its winningest season in program history. The Cyclones won 11 games, made a Big 12 title game appearance and earned a Pop-Tarts Bowl victory over No. 15 Miami last season.

The Wesley Chapel, Florida native was at his best when it mattered the most, leading Iowa State on four game-winning drives where ISU took the lead with under 2:00 remaining in the game (at Iowa, UCF, at Utah, vs. Miami). In his career, Becht has led the Cyclones to five wins where ISU trailed in the fourth quarter.

Becht has thrown a touchdown pass in a school-record 18 consecutive games, the nation’s longest active streak entering the 2025 season.

Becht has quarterbacked the Cyclones through one of the most fruitful periods in program history, having helped Iowa State to 18 wins over the last two seasons, the best two-year stretch in ISU history. He is one of two quarterbacks in Iowa State history with multiple 3,000-yard passing seasons (Brock Purdy).

Iowa State opens the 2025 season August 23 in Dublin, Ireland against Kansas State in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Season tickets are on sale, here. Single-game tickets and mini-packs are also available now.

Exira-EHK Football Looking for Bounce Back Season in 2025

Sports

August 18th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Exira-EHK Football team is looking to get back on track after a 3-6 2025 season. Head Coach Drew Buckholdt says it has been a great summer for the Spartans.

For the Spartans, it’s about getting better and better each and every day.

Buckholdt says the work ethic and dedication to improvement has been substantial.

Exira-EHK lost five starters on offense in the offseason, but Quarterback Bryce Brabham returns for his senior season after throwing for seven touchdown passes and running for over 1,100 yards in 2024. Alongside, Brabham are a few more impactful seniors.

Kilworth was a utility playmaker for Exira-EHK ranking second in receiving yards racking in 227 yards and catching four touchdown passes. Buckholdt says these players are completely focused on their preparation for their week zero matchup and playing cleaner football.

The Spartans will travel to Sidney Friday to open up the 2025 season.
