No. 9 Hawkeyes Fall to No. 7 TCU

Sports

August 22nd, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 9 University of Iowa women’s soccer team fell to No. 7 TCU, 3-2, on Thursday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes move to 1-1-0 on the season.

TCU’s Emma Yolinsky netted the first goal of the game in the ninth minute of the first half.

Graduate student Olivia Lebdaoui would score her first goal as a Hawkeye in the 42nd minute to tie the match, 1-1. The score would remain the same for the remainder of the half.

Making her Hawkeye debut, sophomore goalkeeper Fernanda Mayrink had four saves in the first 45 minutes while TCU goalkeeper Kira Ybarra had one save in the first half for the Horned Frogs. TCU outshot Iowa, 8-7, in the first half. Lebdaoui fired two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

TCU was rewarded a free kick after a yellow card was called on the Hawkeyes and TCU’s Seven Castain was able to score off a deflection to give the Horned Frogs the lead in the 54th minute.

Castain struck again in the 64th minute to add to TCU’s lead, 3-1.

Lebdaoui was rewarded a penalty kick for the Hawkeyes after a handball was called on TCU. Lebdaoui converted on the PK in the 88th minute to cut the deficit to, 3-2. Lebdaoui’s two goals on the night marked a career high.

Junior Abby Skiff fired a shot in the 89th minute that was just high as the Hawkeyes fell, 3-2, in their home opener.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“[Lebdaoui’s goal] before the half was massive. I was expecting a better response from our group, but lessons learned. TCU is a top 10 team, and we know what it looks like. Let’s see if we can grow from it.”

MATCH NOTES
– Lebdaoui is the first Hawkeye to have a multi-goal game since Berit Parten’s two goal performance against Wake Forest on Sept. 1, 2024.
– TCU’s three goal performance is the most goals allowed by the Hawkeyes since Georgia also netted three goals in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 17th, 2023.
– The last time Iowa lost a match in which they scored at least two goals also came against Georgia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when they fell, 3-2, on Nov. 17th, 2023.
– Tonight marked the first time Iowa played back-to-back top 10 opponents.
– 90 Tracker: Millie Greer was the lone Hawkeye position player to register 90 minutes.

The Hawkeyes are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 24 when they play host to Western Michigan. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed live on B1G+ (subscription required).

Agrusso’s Heroics Lift Cyclones to 200th Program Win

Sports

August 22nd, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

OMAHA, Neb. – It looked like Iowa State was set to open the 2025 campaign with two straight draws for the first time since 2009. That was until Cyclone defender Isabella Agrusso scored a 40-foot goal in the final two minutes of the contest to break a stalemate and give the Cyclones their first win of the season.
The win marked a milestone for the Cyclone soccer team, as it is the 200th in program history.
Much like their contest last year, the Cyclones (1-0-1) and Bluejays (1-2-0) were playing a tight, physical contest at Morrison Stadium. The keepers would combine to tally 11 saves, as neither side was able to crack the other’s defense.
A late-game push from the Bluejays would be stymied before the ball caromed out to Ella Ciardullo. She’d send a ball crossfield and ahead to Agrusso, who had two Bluejays on her hip. Creighton’s keeper would come out to meet Agrusso nearly 40 yards away from the net, and thanks to the over-aggression, Agrusso had to just loft the ball over her head and into the net as she gave the Cyclones the lead.
Freshman Megan Walters led the team with two shots, while seven others collected one apiece. Five of ISU’s nine total attempts came on goal, though the Cyclones were outshot by the Bluejays, 15-9. Kasye Cannistraro had a career night between the poles for the Cyclones, as the redshirt sophomore had a personal best seven saves and collected her first career clean sheet. Along with Cannistraro in net, Ella Zimmerman and Lucy Froitzheim were the only players to play all 90 minutes in what was a hot night.
For Creighton, Olivia Duray, Brynn Gardner and Ariana Mondiri tied for a game-high three shots, while both Gardner and Mallory Connealy tied for a game-high two shots on goal. The Bluejays had six more shots than ISU but were turned away frequently by Cyclone keeper Kasey Cannistraro. Creighton only had 130 minutes of bench production on the evening. Bluejay keeper Alyssa Zalac corralled four saves in her 90 minutes of work.
How it Happened
The teams would feel each other out early, as the first shot didn’t come until the ninth minute when ISU rattled off a pair. The first half would feature just six more shots, and all of them came from the Bluejays, who tested Cannistraro often.
Speaking of Cannistraro, she and Creighton’s keeper, Zalac, were the stories of the first stanza. Each made various plays, snuffing out runs and preventing attempts. At the break, ISU had just the two shots, and Creighton had six, with Cannistraro saving three of them.
The Bluejays kept pressing the attack at the beginning of the second, as Creighton rattled off a pair of shots in the first five minutes. The Cyclones were able to get a handful of quality looks, as they ripped off four shots in a three-minute span. Zalac and the Bluejays were steady, though, continuing to turn away opportunities.
After the first half saw each team rapidly trade possessions, each side settled in in the second and sustained momentum for longer bits, putting together quality runs.
Following ISU’s four-shot barrage in the 55th minute, Creighton responded with a plethora of shots in the 58th. After the initial attempt from the Jays was saved, two more just missed as the score remained knotted at 0-0.
30 minutes of action would go by and neither side was able to break through. After an Alaina Villa attempt just missed in the 85th minute, Creighton was able to go the other way and earn a corner kick in the 88th minute. After the volley caromed out, Ciardullo would control the ball before sending it ahead to Agrusso, who did the rest. Her clutch goal gave ISU the lead and notched her first career game-winning goal.
Fannon’s Thoughts
“It’s always fun to win in such dramatic fashion, but we were really good throughout the whole match. We did a really good job with the game plan, created a lot of good chances, and executed well. I’m really proud of our women, and they earned that win tonight.”

Iowa State will kick off the college football season on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland, when the 22nd ranked Cyclones play 17th ranked Kansas State. ISU enters the season with high hopes after posting a school record 11 wins and coach Matt Campbell says they will find out where they are at in a hurry.

Campbell says one of the keys will be handling adversity.

Klieman says in-game adjustments will be crucial.

East Mills Ready to Battle Griswold in Week 0 Matchup

Sports

August 21st, 2025 by Christian Adams

The football season has arrived, and for the East Mills Wolverines, that means an early start to the season as they prepare to travel to Griswold for a week zero matchup with the Tigers. Coming off a 5-4 season a year ago, things will look a little different for the Wolverines. East Mills graduated 8 seniors from last year’s roster. This included quarterback Caleb Urban (who threw for more than 2,000 yards), their top rusher in Sheldon Vandenberg, their top two receivers, and the leading tackler in Jackson Embree. Despite the departures, head coach Trenton Turney is confident in his group, but expect to see a more evenly distributed play sheet in the season opener.

Junior Mason Camden will get the nod in week zero at quarterback. Although making his first varsity start, he does not come in with a lack of experience and has benefited from playing behind Urban.

Other playmakers will need to step up for the Wolverines, and they have guys at each position that could be ready for a breakout year. At receiver, sophomore Jhalil Reed will serve as the team’s utility knife, as a freshman, he hauled in 18 receptions for 308 yards and a touchdown. Senior Quinn Poorker was not far behind him with 11 receptions for 211 yards. On defense, Senior Cooper Hagen was third on the team in tackles last season with 35 and Turney feels confident in him and his front four.

Last year’s matchup between the two was a shootout. The squads combined for 114 points while East Mills had 378 yards of total offense as they slipped by Griswold 58-56. Of course, with game being moved to week zero, Turney is expecting a lot of unknowns but also knows that Griswold will be prepared.

Although East Mills lost a lot in the offseason, the Wolverines are excited to get back on the field and prove what type of team they can be. KJAN will have the coverage with the pregame show at 6:30 pm with kickoff schedule for 7 pm.

Red Oak School Board accepts Western Iowa Conference invitation

News, Sports

August 21st, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Red Oak school officials have formally taken the next step towards changing athletic conferences within the next two years.

During its regular meeting Wednesday evening, the Red Oak School Board unanimously approved accepting an invitation to join the Western Iowa Conference no later than the 2027-28 school year. WIC officials invited 10 schools earlier this year, including Red Oak and Shenandoah–both of which were founding members of the Hawkeye 10 Conference over 90 years ago. The move also comes after school officials held a community forum on the potential switch Sunday evening.

The next steps include the WIC Board of Control officially voting both schools in on August 21st. Additionally, the move would need to be approved by a state conference realignment committee established by House File 783. However, at Sunday’s forum, Lorenz said the committee had yet to receive any official guidance from the state’s department of education.

Atlantic Volleyball Set to Begin 2025 Season

Sports

August 20th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Atlantic Volleyball team has begun official practice and Head Coach Alyssa Boltz said she noticed lots of improvement in the summer and the team focused on building a team foundation the first week.

The Trojans come off a 7-25 season last year and graduated four seniors. Boltz says outside of the four seniors, there was minimal experience on the court.

Atlantic’s top returners include Senior Jaycee Reed who posted 84 kills in 2024 ranking second on the team. On the defensive side of the volleyball, Senior Taylee Hagen recorded 168 digs as well as Senior Zoey Kirchhoff leading the team last year with 24 service aces. Boltz emphasized the familiarity the players have one another across all sports believing that will make the team stronger.

The Trojans will play one regular season and then hit the road all day for a tournament on August 30th which Boltz believes is extremely beneficial.

Atlantic looks to improve in the 2025 season with much more experience on the court.
