Froitzheim’s Score in Final Seconds Leads to Senior Day Draw

Sports

August 25th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

AMES, Iowa – It was looking to be a grim Senior Day at the Cyclone Soccer Complex, that was until Lucy Froitzheim netted an equalizer in the 90th minute to force a 1-1 draw with Drake Sunday night.
Iowa State (1-0-2, 0-0 Big 12) fell behind in the 56th minute off a Bulldog header. Drake (1-1-2, 0-0 MVC) would hold that lead up until the final seconds when a frantic Cyclone attack pushed one through to even the score and earn a Senior Day Draw. An Isabella Agruso throw-in found Lauren Hernandez, who headed the ball perfectly to Lucy Froizheim, who used her right boot to knock it past the Drake keeper. The goal is the latest scored by a Cyclone since Thursday when Agrusso scored the game-winner in the 89th minute at Creighton.
The goal for Froitzheim was the first of her career, while both Hernandez and Agrusso moved to three points on the season.
Megan Walters, Hernandez and Ella Ciardullo were tied for the team lead with two shots apiece. Both Hernandez and Ciardullo’s pair of shots came on goal. Agrusso, Ella Zimmerman and Kasey Cannistraro were the only Cyclones to play all 90 minutes. Cannistraro had four saves on the night, while ISU also recorded a team save.
For Drake, Layla Kelbel led all athletes with four shots, placing three on target. Bulldog goal-scorer Angela Gutierrez had three shots of her own, placing two on net. Drake’s keeper, Addie Ford, collected six saves on the night.
Drake held the edge in shots, 12-11, but Iowa State had the advantage in corners, 5-3. Each team had five saves, while Drake recorded more fouls (16-10).
How it Happened
Each side slow-played the start of the match, trading empty possessions throughout the first ten minutes. Drake tallied the contest’s first shots at the 12-minute mark but saw each blocked by an ISU defender.
The Cyclones would fire off five shots in the first half, but saw three of them saved by Ford. At the half, Drake held a 6-5 shot advantage and collected three saves as the teams would go into the break knotted at nil.
Iowa State came out of the half firing, as the Cyclones rattled off a trio of shots in the first seven minutes but saw each turned away. A few seconds following a Drake corner kick, Gutierrez headed in a ball from Snowden to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute of play.
The Cyclones searched for an equalizer the remainder of the contest, seeing solid chances stopped by the Bulldogs multiple times. It wasn’t until a last-ditch push from the Cyclones that a shot broke through the Drake defense.
Throwing the ball in with a little over 30 seconds left, Agrusso lofted a ball into the box right to Hernandez, who headed it forward to Froitzheim. Then, with a defender draped on her hip, Froitzheim poked one past the Drake keeper to knot things up with just under 30 seconds left.
Both sides held firm in the final ticks, as the game went on to a 1-1 draw.
Fannon’s Thoughts
On the game:
“It is a great step that our team has taken to be so tough going into the closing stages of matches. We won’t always play fantastically, so to grind out a late foal again is a top habit to have.”
On his seniors:
“It’s such an eclectic group of seniors, including a couple who are pretty new, and a couple who aren’t able to take their senior year because of injury. But every one of them has served our program with passion and determination and we are very proud that they will always call Iowa State home.”
Goals
Iowa State: Lucy Froitzheim – 90’ (1)
Drake: Angela Gutierrez – 56’ (1)
Assists
Iowa State: Lauren Hernandez (1), Isabella Agrusso (1)
Drake: Izzy Snowden (1)
Up Next
Iowa State will be back in action next Sunday, August 31, when it returns to the Cyclone Soccer Complex to take on Memphis. The Cyclones will take on the Tigers at 6 p.m. in a contest that will be streamed live on ESPN+

Iowa would blank Western Michigan the rest of the game, defeating the Broncos, 2-0.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“Our mentality and our ability to compete for 90 minutes was really great to see. Josie Jones had an excellent goal off a set piece in the first half. The quality of play in the first half, Liana TarascoKenzie RolingJosie Jones, some of the players who played their best soccer. Early in the season but we needed that. Western Michigan is going to win a lot of games in the MAC and they are going to be a top 50 RPI game.

That was important, and a bit of a trap game. I thought our mentality was great. I thought they followed the scout that we won a lot of balls in the midfield which we did not win against TCU. Even when Western Michigan pushed back in the second half, for 15 minutes, we took that. Then we got the second goal that made life a bit easier for us.

Griswold Ready to Host East Mills in Season Opener

Sports

August 22nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Griswold Tigers Football team gets an early start as they are set to host the East Mills Wolverines on Friday Night to kick off the Football season. The Tigers will look to improve upon a 3-6 record from a year ago and will do so with a bit of a new look after graduating 11 seniors. However, with fall camp in the review mirror, head coach Seth Lembke believes the week 0 contest will help the team continue to grow.

The early start, combined with the newcomers, necessitated a slightly different feel in camp, but sometimes less is more.

One of the new faces in new places in the Griswold lineup is senior quarterback Wyatt Silk. Although not new to varsity football, it will be his first year at quarterback after playing behind four-year starter Bode Wyman.  Lembke says his progression through camp has been strong and that he has benefited from his time on the field in other areas as well as from playing behind Wyman.

Arguably, the area most affected by graduation is the receiving corps. The Tigers lost their top six receivers from a year ago, including Connor Bowers and Auden Wilson, who each notched over 500 yards. Although it might take some time to completely develop the pass game, there have been some standouts in camp.

On defense the Tigers will look to senior RJ Dishong to be a leader. Dishong finished sixth on the team in total tackles a year ago with 31.5 adding 5 tackles for loss.

Early season games always come in with a bit of unknowns, but this game could see that exemplified with both squads looking to fill in certain spots. However, similar to the opposition, Lembke expects East Mills to be prepared.

This game could come down to the ability to limit mistakes, and for Lembke the keys to a victory are the basics.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm in Griswold and join KJAN for pregame coverage at 6:30 pm.
