Iowa passing game struggles in win over Albany

Sports

August 31st, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski says he was happy with the win but disappointed in his performance in a 34-7 win over Albany. The Hawkeyes compiled 310 yards of rushing but the passing game struggled. Gronowski finished 8-of-15 for 44 yards and a touchdown before being listed in the third quarter while dealing with leg cramps.

Gronowski says they hope the passing game can make progress heading into the game against Iowa State.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz felt Gronowski was too anxious.

Ferentz says Gronowski’s ability to run is an added bonus.

Iowa State blasts South Dakota and looks ahead to Iowa

Sports

August 31st, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State will take a 2-0 record into Saturday’s 72nd meeting against Iowa. The Cyclones rolled to a 55-7 win over South Dakota in their home opener and coach Matt Campbell was pleased with the improvement he saw over a season opening win over Kansas State.

The emotions will be high leading up to Saturday’s game.

Campbell has been impressed with the consistency of effort so far this season.

The Cyclones will be in search of their second straight win in the series after a 20-19 victory in Iowa city last year but their last win over the Hawkeyes in Ames was a 44-41 triple overtime victory back in 2011.

Ammeraal, Stojanovic Lead Hawkeyes Past Utah Tech

Sports

August 31st, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

LAS VEGAS – University of Iowa volleyball outlasted Utah Tech in five sets on Saturday night inside the Cox Pavilion. The Hawkeyes improve to 2-0 on the season.

Senior setter Claire Ammeraal notched her second triple-double as a Hawkeye, recording 41 assists, 18 digs and 11 kills. The native of Madison, Wisconsin, posted a triple-double last season against Providence. Sophomore Aleksandra Stojanovic matched freshman Carmel Vares to lead Iowa with 13 kills each. Stojanovic hit .524 and blocked two Trailblazer attacks in the second match of her collegiate career.

Senior libero Milana Moisio posted a career high in digs, recording 16 in the win. Junior Hannah Whittingstall matched her best in blocks with 10.

Four Hawkeyes registered double-digit kills, led by Stojanovic and Vares. Ammeraal’s 11 kills were one away from a new career high. Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Worden drilled 10 kills.

Overall, Iowa hit .178 and held Utah Tech to .162. The Hawkeyes dug 68 attacks and had 13 blocks. The team was even in aces and service errors with four each way.

The Hawkeyes are 2-0 for the second-straight season and have won five consecutive five-set matches.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH JIM BARNES
“In the first weekend of competition, we expected the unexpected. Utah Tech, especially with that many returners, played us really well, and we had to step it up. We found a way tonight. My favorite part of the match was seeing our response in the third set. I took a couple of our starters out and then started them in the third. Claire (Ammeraal) was on fire in that third set. That changed the momentum back to us. But we need to learn to not put ourselves in that position. Early in the season, sometimes we have to find a way to gut it out. Sashka (Stojanovic) really came alive in the fifth set. I am really proud of her.”

MATCH SUMMARY
SET ONE (IOWA 25-18)
After winning the season opener last night, Iowa and Utah Tech met as the lone undefeated teams at the Rebel Challenge. The Hawkeyes started shaky while trying to find rhythm offensively and handed Utah Tech six of its first eight points. The Hawkeyes settled in and won the race to 10 on kills from Worden. Utah Tech called its first timeout at 11-8. The Hawkeyes’ lead was trimmed to 12-11 before Vares sparked the offense with two kills in succession. Worden’s fifth kill of the set gave the Hawkeyes a 16-11 lead. Despite a quick run from Utah Tech, an Ammeraal and Whittingstall block – sandwiched by two Trailblazer errors – propelled Iowa back into control. The Hawkeyes sealed the set on an opponent error. Iowa held Utah Tech to a .030 hitting percentage. The set was tied six times, primarily early on.

SET TWO (Utah Tech, 25-14)
Set two was controlled by the Trailblazers from start to finish. Kills from Ammeraal and Stojanovic, followed by a Worden ace broke the early Utah Tech run and saw Iowa trail, 6-4. The Trailblazers used several mini-runs to expand their lead north of five points by the midway mark of the set, leading 11-6 and 14-7. The Hawkeyes subbed in sophomore setter Jenna Meitzler and junior outside hitter Gabby Deery to provide a spark. Ultimately, set two went to Utah Tech, 25-14, and the script from set one was flipped.

SET THREE (IOWA, 25-15)
Coach Barnes re-inserted Ammeraal and Worden to begin set three. Vares was terminal from the pin on a great feed from Ammeraal to start the set. Ammeraal got on her offense in the third and used two early kills to give Iowa a 4-2 lead. The Hawkeyes blew the set open at 9-2, courtesy of the offense exposing the middle of the Utah Tech defense. Ammeraal notched three kills and a block within the first ten points of the set and Iowa fed off of that effort. A brief Utah Tech rally was thwarted when Whittingstall solo blocked an attack. The next play, Whittingstall teamed up with Ammeraal to stuff Utah Tech again. Vares smacked her 10th kill to win the third set. The Hawkeyes bounced back and hit .310 in the frame.

SET FOUR (Utah Tech, 25-22)
Set four was the most competitive and back-and-forth set that the match had seen to this point. Ammeraal and Vares continued to lead the Iowa offense, while Utah Tech gifted the Hawkeyes a few points early. Iowa led 10-6, but the Trailblazers forced an Iowa timeout after a 4-0 spree. The teams could not gain separation until late in the set. Trailing 20-18 and coming out of a timeout, Whittingstall and Ammeraal went back-to-back in the middle and tied the set at 20. In the end, Utah Tech forced a deciding fifth set on a pair of kills and an Iowa error. The set saw 12 ties and seven lead changes.

SET FIVE (IOWA 15-11)
Worden sparked the Hawkeyes to begin set five with a kill and a block. Utah Tech responded with a 3-0 run, as the tug-of-war began in the decider. Utah Tech built its lead to 7-4 before Iowa ripped off a 4-0 run to take the lead as the teams switched ends. Ammeraal and Vanzandt led the way with two kills each during that run. At 10-9, Vanzandt approached the service line. The Trailblazers attacked in system and sent a ball Moisio’s way. A phenomenal sprawling dig from Moisio was passed to Ammeraal, who set up Worden’s terminal swing. Iowa secured momentum at that point and secured the win moments later behind kills from Stojanovic and Whittingstall.

Up Next: Iowa concludes the Rebel Challenge at 4:00 p.m. (CT) against CSU Bakersfield. The match will be streamed on the UNLV Athletics YouTube channel and broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network with John Evans on the call.

Glenwood Strikes Early, Rolls to Win Over Atlantic

Sports

August 29th, 2025 by Chris Parks

The Glenwood Rams scored on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Ben Carlo to Kaden Crouch on the second play of the game and never looked back in a 32-7 win over Atlantic in both teams 2025 season opener.

Atlantic played a mistake prone game, turning over the ball 7 times and committing over 10 penalties. The Rams took advantage of those mistakes and dominated time of possession in the contest.

The Rams expected to use a two-quarterback system but Ben Carlo took control of the snaps with a solid outing, throwing for three scores on the night. Jack Johnson and Ethan Eisman were the other two recipients of Carlo’s touchdown tosses.

Glenwood built a 26-0 halftime lead and the Trojans didn’t get on the board until a 33-yard touchdown run by Landon Hagen late in the fourth quarter.

Aaron Christian had a big night with three field goal makes. Christian booted kicks from 39, 35, and 43 yards to bolster the Rams’ victory.

Glenwood moves to 1-0 on the season and will travel to face the Harlan Cyclones next Friday night.

Atlantic drops to 0-1 and will try to bounce back next week with a trip to face Denison-Schleswig. Christian Adams and Jack McGonigal will have the call of that one on KJAN and KJANTV with pregame at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m. next Friday night.

Hawkeyes Roll UNLV in Season Opener

Sports

August 29th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

LAS VEGAS – University of Iowa volleyball rolled UNLV in a sweep inside Cox Pavilion to open the 2025 season on Friday night.

Iowa is 4-0 in season openers under head coach Jim Barnes. This was the first meeting between Iowa and UNLV.

Senior newcomer Chard’e Vanzandt led the team with 11 kills, while hitting a .222 clip. Junior Hannah Whittingstall and freshman Carmel Vares created a wall at the net with eight and seven blocks, respectively. Senior Claire Ammeraal spread out her 28 assists and hit a team-high .462. Senior Milana Moisio anchored the defense with 11 digs.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH JIM BARNES
“The team was able to pull together and we showed a lot of toughness tonight. We executed well on defense tonight, which allowed us to stay in the game. Claire (Ammeraal) was a difference maker throughout the match and was able to give us some momentum by putting a few balls away. Carmel (Vares), Hannah (Whittingstall) and Chard’e (Vanzandt) stayed consistent for us offensively, and helped to close out each set.”

MATCH SUMMARY
SET ONE (IOWA 25-22)
Iowa started the match on a 4-0 run with kills from redshirt sophomore Alyssa Worden and Vares, and a block from Whittingstall and Vares. Back-to-back blocks by Worden pushed the Hawkeyes up 7-1 and the Rebels called a timeout. Iowa sprinted out to 9-1 lead before UNLV answered with four consecutive points. UNLV settled into the set, trading points before it pulled within one at 13-12 and Iowa called a timeout. The set was tied at 15 all before a Worden block gave Iowa the lead. Despite an unsuccessful challenge from Iowa, back-to-back UNLV service errors put the Hawkeyes up 21-18. Two blocks from Vares and Whittingstall closed out the set for the Hawkeyes.

SET TWO (IOWA 25-21)
UNLV got two quick points before the Hawkeyes responded with three kills to tie the set at 3 all. After trading points with the Rebels, Iowa won the race to 10 and led by three. UNLV responded with a 7-1 run to go in front, 14-11. The Hawkeyes remained resilient after a timeout and pulled within one at 16-15 off a block by Vares and Whittingstall and a Worden kill. UNLV called a timeout after a Vanzandt kill tied the set at 17 all. Both teams went kill-for-kill, until Iowa was able to pull away at 23-20 on Worden and Vares kills. Iowa halted a Rebel comeback and finished the set on a Vares kill and block by Vares and Whittingstall.

SET THREE (IOWA 25-21)
Neither team was able to find much separation through the first 20 points. A Vares kill and a pair of hitting errors from the Rebels pushed Iowa to a 12-9 lead. UNLV inched closer at 12-11, but Iowa responded with a 3-0 run to go up 15-11. Iowa’s first ace of the match came from sophomore Jamie Marquardt to build Iowa’s lead to 17-12. Regardless of any UNLV run, Iowa responded and kept its distance from UNLV in the third set. A spurt from UNLV was answered by back-to-back Ammeraal kills. Two powerful swings from Vanzandt moved the Hawkeyes within position of securing the win. UNLV saved a couple of match points but Iowa stayed composed and finished the match with a kill from Vanzandt. The Hawkeyes’ defense held UNLV’s offense to only a .028 hitting percentage in the final set.

Up Next: The Hawkeyes are back in action Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. (CT) against Utah Tech. The match will be streamed on the UNLV Athletics YouTube channel and broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network with John Evans on the call.

Audubon Cruises to 64-18 Victory over Remsen-St. Mary’s in Season Opener

Sports

August 29th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

It was a firework start to the season for the Audubon Football team as they cruised to a 64-18 win over the defending state champion Remsen-St. Mary’s Hawks. A 40-point first quarter put the Wheelers in the driver’s seat almost immediately. A two play 50-yard opening drive for the Wheelers with a turnaround scoop and score gave Audubon 16 points in the game’s first few minutes. It was a collection of big play scores for the Wheelers all night long and the ability to pressure the Hawks’ offense all night were the keys to the lopsided victory. Sophomore quarterback Aiden Kjergaard led the way for Audubon rushing for nearly 200 yards and finding the end zone with his feet four times all in the first half. The second half provided the opportunity for many younger players to see more snaps that ever before in their careers, including Sophomore Paxton Beane who put the cherry on top for the Wheelers with a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Early in the first quarter, Audubon’s defense stood out with a three and out stop to get the ball right away from the Hawks. It only took a 22-yard run by Sophomore Mason Kasperbauer and a 28-yard Aiden Kjergaard touchdown run to put the Wheelers ahead 6-0. On the two point try, Burks reaches into his bag of tricks and a handoff to Junior Karson Obermeier turns into his pass to the big man Hayden Larsen for the full eight points.

Sophomore Dalton Klein started at quarterback for the Hawks and completed a pass to his receiver but was fumbled and scooped up by Kasperbauer for a 15-yard fumble recovery for the touchdown followed by a successful two-point conversion. Audubon was ahead 16-0 just a few minutes in.

Another defensive stop by the Wheelers, gave themselves the ball right away again. Kjergaard copied the result of the first drive and finds the end zone a second time from 28 yards out and all of a sudden it was 24-0 Audubon halfway through the first quarter.

Remsen St. Mary’s quickly down three scores caps off their first touchdown drive of the night with a Klein 24-yard connection to Sophomore Beau Johnson for the score. Unlike, Audubon Remsen-St. Mary’s was unable to succeed on a two-point attempt.

After the Hawks score, Kjergaard gets the football back and doesn’t need much time. The sophomore quarterback split the gap, busted to the outside and dashed to his third touchdown run of the night but this time from 44 yards out. After that, the Wheelers defense wasn’t done scoring as they intercept Klein for the first of two times on the night. The pass was intercepted by Kasperbauer and taken to the house from 20 yards out.

Remsen St. Mary’s down 40-6 late in the first quarter catches a spark on a deep ball from Klein to Johnson again from 58 yards out. The first quarter ended at 40-12.

In the second, Audubon didn’t slow down as Kjergaard proved he has an arm too. He hits Senior Tight End Brody Weber over the middle for 45 yards followed by Kasperbauer sprinting to the end zone from 24 yards out to give Audubon a 48-12 advantage. Kjergaard capped off the half with another rushing touchdown from 46 yards out and took a 56-12 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the teams emptied their benches as the running clock was utilized. Both teams exchanged touchdowns as the game ended at 64-18.

Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks was thrilled with the start of the game.

Birks believes he will utilize both Kjergaard and Wessel in the quarterback position throughout the season.

The pressure was where it needed to be according to Burks.

Audubon improves to 1-0 after the 64-18 victory while the Hawks drop to 0-1. Audubon will head south to Griswold next week as Remsen-St. Mary’s travels to GTRA.
