The Atlantic Trojans are looking to rebound after their week one defeat and pick up their first win of the season as they hit the road to face the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs. Despite a 32-7 loss to Glenwood last week, head coach Joe Brummer saw some positives, especially on the defensive side of the ball, that he and the Trojans will look to carry over into week 2.

Despite being in the same conference, the varsity football teams have not seen each other since 2017. Since 2008 the Trojans are 3-7 against the Monarchs with the most recent win coming in 2015. Despite the long hiatus of a varsity game, they have played at the middle school level more recently and both coaches are familiar with each other, which is why Brummer is expecting a hard-nosed challenge.

On offensive, the Trojans will look to make a big step in the run game. Last week, Atlantic was held to 92 rushing yards and Brummer says it starts with what they are doing at the line of scrimmage.

Defensively, they did well against the last week run limiting the Rams to 3.2 yards per carry. However, this week they will face a different style of ground attack.

Ultimately, both teams are in similar situations, looking to rebound from an opening week loss. Both will look to accomplish many of the same things especially on the ground. As the game will primarily feature the run attack, possessions and what you do with them will be extremely important, protecting the football and the ability to control the line of scrimmage will mean all the difference.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (KCRG) – Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark announced on social media Thursday that she will miss the rest of the 2025 WNBA season. Clark played in just 13 games this season, last suiting up on July 15 against the Connecticut Sun. She has battled groin injuries in both legs and also missed time with a left quad injury.

In her statement on the social media site “X,” Clark said “I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season. I spent hours in the gym every day with the singular goal of getting back out there, disappointed isn’t a big enough word to describe how I am feeling. I want to thank everyone who had my back through all the uncertainty. This has been incredibly frustrating, but even in the bad, there is good. The way the fans continued to show up for me, and for the Fever, brought me so much joy and important perspective. I am so proud of how this team has only gotten stronger through adversity this year. Now it’s time to close out the season and claim our spot in the Playoffs.”

The former Hawkeye averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and five rebounds per game this season. Indiana sits at 21-20 on the season and third in the Eastern Conference.

Class 1A eighth ranked Treynor has a tough non-district test on the road tonight (Friday night) at 2A eighth ranked Van Meter. Treynor coach Jeff Casey was impressed with his nearly brand new offensive line in a season opening win over Riverside.

Casey says they will need a great effort against Van Meter.

(Radio Iowa) – The Racing and Gaming Commission has put the horse racing industry on notice that time is running out to set the new race schedule, or they will step in and set it. Racing and Gaming Administrator Tina Eick says they asked the horse racing groups to do something different based a study released last year. “One of the big takeaways from that study that the Commission did was that the status quo of racing horse racing in Iowa wasn’t going to continue to sustain a vibrant industry,” she says.

The commissioners vote on a new schedule during their October meeting and Eick says they got an update last week that there is still no consensus on a 2026 schedule.  “The Commission did strongly again urge the parties, the thoroughbreds, the quarter horses, Prairie Meadows Casino and Racetrack, to come together and find a compromise because they have much greater latitude in. What kind of an agreement they come up with,” Eick says.

Eick says if the Racing and Gaming Commission has to step in, they are confined to what the law says. “And, in all likelihood, the meet that they would be required to set is not going to be favorable to any party, or no party is going to be particularly happy with the results,” she says, “so it’s really in their best interest if they’re able to figure out a compromise.”

Eick says there is still time for the horse racing groups to come up with a schedule before the October meeting in Davenport, and the Commission has let them know they will step in if that isn’t done.

Iowa State tight end Gabe Burkle says expect the unexpected on Saturday when the 16th ranked Cyclones host Iowa in the 72nd meeting in the series. The home team hasn’t won in this series since 2018.

If there is a major advantage for ISU it may be at quarterback. Cyclone junior Rocco Becht is completing 69 percent of his throws and has five touchdowns. In the last two seasons he has been at his best with the game on the line.

Burkle says Becht gives the entire offense confidence.

The Iowa State defense expects to face an improved Iowa passing game when the teams collide for the 72nd time in Ames on Saturday. The Hawkeyes rushed for 310 yards in a 34-7 win over Albany but managed only 48 yards through the air.

That’s ISU linebacker Caleb Bacon, who hopes to experience a victory over the Hawkeyes on the field. He missed last year’s 20-19 win in Kinnick Stadium due to injury.
