Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews Arkansas State

Sports

September 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

It is rare when a power four conference team makes a road trip to a group of five school but that is what Iowa State faces when the 14th ranked Cyclones visit Arkansas State out of the Sun Belt Conference on Saturday. It was two years ago ISU visited Ohio out of the Mid-American Conference and lost 10-7.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell, who does not believe the Cyclones will take the Red Wolves for granted.

The Cyclones are 3-0 and with a bye week approaching Campbell wants his team to remain hungry.

Campbell says the goal this week remains improvement.

Iowa TE Addison Ostrenga lost for the season as Hawkeyes prepare for UMass

Sports

September 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says senior tight end Addison Ostrenga will miss the remainder with an Achilles injury suffered in Saturday’s loss at Iowa State. Ostrenga underwent surgery on Monday.

With Ostrenga out, Zach Ortwerth becomes the starter at tight end. Redshirt freshman and former Carroll Kuemper standout D.J. Vonnahme will also get playing time.

As the Hawkeyes prepare for their final non-conference game against UMass they continue to search for some kind of passing threat. Through two games quarterback Mark Gronowski has only 131 yards of passing, including 83 in a 16-13 loss at Iowa State.

Ferentz says improvement will come as they tailor the passing game to the strength of their players.

Ferentz says there were several factors that contributed to the loss, including dropped passes.

McGroarty Named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

Sports

September 9th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer student-athlete Kelli McGroarty was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the Big Ten office announced on Tuesday.

The Voorhees, N.J. native broke a program record in No. 11 Iowa’s, 5-0, victory over Missouri State on Sunday when she netted four goals. Two of her goals came within just over a minute of each other in the first half (42:18 & 43:14).

McGroarty’s four goals tied for the second most goals in a game this season in D1, only trailing Alivia Scott of Tennessee who netted five. The graduate student became the 10th Hawkeye in program history to record a hat-trick prior to netting her fourth goal in the 89th minute. Her hat-trick marked the second hat-trick of her collegiate career and the first hat-trick by a Hawkeye since Meike Ingles on Oct. 17, 2021 vs. Illinois.

McGroarty’s eight points also marked a new single game program record, breaking the previous record of seven. Her nine shot attempts on the night tied for the sixth most shots in a single game in program history.

McGroarty becomes the 11th Hawkeye in program history and the fifth player in head coach Dave DiIanni’s tenure to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. The last time an Iowa player won the award was Hannah Drkulec on Sept. 17, 2019.

The Hawkeyes are back in action when they play host to Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at the Iowa Soccer Complex in the teams Big Ten opener. Friday’s match will be streamed live on B1G+ (subscription required).

Konrardy Receives Pair of National Nods

Sports

September 9th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State kicker Kyle Konrardy was named the Burlsworth Trophy Walk-On of the Week and was named a Lou Groza Award “Star of the Week” for his performance in ISU’s 16-13 victory over Iowa on Saturday.

Konrardy hit a 54-yard game-winning field goal to put Iowa State in front of rival Iowa with 1:52 remaining in the final quarter. It was the same distance as his game-winner against the Hawkeyes last season in Kinnick Stadium.

Already named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for the second week in a row, Konrardy’s 54-yard field goal Saturday came on the heels of his 63-yard make against South Dakota last week, which is the longest in nation this season. The Dubuque, Iowa native is the only FBS kicker with two makes from 50-plus yards this season and owns two of the 10 longest made field goals nationally this year (63, 54).

Konrardy is now 2-of-2 on kicks from 50-plus yards this season and 4-of-5 in his career.

Saturday against the Hawkeyes, he tied a career-best with a 3-of-3 mark on field goal attempts, hitting from 44, 27 and 54 yards. He also handled kickoff duties, sending 2-of-5 kicks out of the end zone for a touchback.

No. 14 Iowa State hits the road to Arkansas State in Week 3. Kickoff from Jonesboro is set for 3 p.m. (CT) on ESPN2.

The Kansas City, Missouri native played a vital role in a defensive effort that held Iowa to just 83 yards passing and 214 yards of total offense.
