Hopes are high for the UNI men’s basketball team as Ben Jacobson enters his 20th season at the helm. The Panthers return 11 players from last year’s team that finished 20-13 and played in the NIT.

After appearing in 33 games as a freshman, six-eight Will Hornseth is ready to fill the void in the post.

The Panthers were picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley preseason poll. They open the regular season at home on November sixth against Cal State Northridge.

The schedule gets even tougher for the UNI football team this week. After opening Missouri Valley play with a 35-7 home loss to 15th ranked North Dakota the Panthers visit second ranked South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits have won 32 straight home games.

That’s UNI coach Todd Stepsis, who says South Dakota State is talented and plays with the consistency required of a national title contender.

Stepsis says while the Panthers know they are a decided underdog the game also presents a big opportunity.

Stepsis says they will work this week on handling crowd noise.

Stepsis says the defense needs to do a better job of limiting big plays and iy is small mistakes that are costing them.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Missouri, 15-7, in a scheduled 18 inning game on Saturday night at Duane Banks Field.

Iowa used 15 different arms in the contest. Tyler Guerin got the start on the mound and threw two innings striking out five. In total the Iowa staff struck out 27 Tigers while allowing just five walks.

The Iowa bats totaled 24 hits with Gable Mitchell leading the way tallying four hits and scoring three runs. Caleb Wulf and Miles Risley each recorded three hits. Mitchell, Risley and Brett White each plated two RBIs.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Friday, October 10 at 3 p.m. against Heartland CC.

SEATTLE – University of Iowa volleyball dropped a straight sets match at Washington on Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Iowa fell to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Graduate Chard’e Vanzandt led the team with seven kills and two service aces. Senior Claire Ammeraal tallied 19 assists, seven digs and three kills. Making her first career start as a Hawkeye, freshman Peyton Young recorded three kills, hit a team-high .200 and had one solo block. Redshirt freshman Hallie Steponaitis was impactful in her second start, terminating six kills with one solo block.

Up Next: Iowa continues its road trip, traveling to Michigan State and Michigan. The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, Oct. 10, in East Lansing to play the Spartans at 6:30 P.M. (CDT). IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 10 University of Iowa women’s soccer team tied with Michigan, 1-1, on Saturday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes move to 8-2-3 on the season and 3-1-2 in Big Ten conference play.

The first 45-minutes remained scoreless; however, Iowa controlled the first half. Throughout the first 45 minutes the Hawkeyes fired seven shots while holding the Wolverines to just one. Iowa put two shots on goal while Michigan didn’t put any on goal.

Michigan goalkeeper Sophie Homan had two saves in the first half to keep the Hawkeyes off the board. After 45 minutes it was a scoreless tie between the two Big Ten foes.

Michigan would strike first with Jenna Lang giving the Wolverines a, 1-0, advantage in the 60^th minute. Lang’s first shot attempt was deflected before she was able to convert on her second shot.

Graduate student Miah Schueller was able to tie the match in the 68^th minute on a goal from long distance off a corner kick. It marked the first goal of Schueller’s collegiate career. Junior Abby Skiff was credited for the assist.

Despite the Hawkeyes outshooting the Wolverines, 14-4, in the second half and, 21-5, for the game the match would finish a, 1-1, tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Fernanda Mayrink finished with one save while Homan finished with four.

AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the Cyclone Invitational on Sunday, facing opponents from Minnesota.

Sophomore Sally Xu and freshman Eline Bex teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Minnesota’s Jesselle Ante and Sofia Pinto. The duo went undefeated in doubles throughout the weekend, earning four wins.

In singles play, Xu fell to Ante, 6-4, 6-1, while Bex dropped a close match to Pinto, 7-5, 6-4.

The Hawkeyes will return to action at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor from October 10-12.

“It was a great experience for Sally and Eline to get some quality matches over the weeekend,” said Iowa assistant coach Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell. “They had some quality wins in doubles and learned a lot from each match. We’re excited to get back to work in Iowa City and get ready for Ann Arbor.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell to No. 1 Northwestern, 3-1, on Friday evening at Grant Field.

“It was the little details that hurt us,” head coach Lisa Cellucci said. “They were able to capitalize in transition, and we weren’t. We needed to find a way to have sustained possession up front, and that’s kind of where it hurt us. Our girls made a great effort defensively, and we knew we had to do that. This game is a chance to build on our skills. The race is still wide open with everybody else, so we’re going to work to continue getting better.”

The Hawkeyes struck first when Dionne van Aalsum netted her 17th goal of the season at the 10:56 mark in the first quarter, assisted by Rachel Herbine and Felicia Zonnenberg.

Northwestern responded shortly after halftime, tying the game 1-1 on a rebounded penalty corner goal by leading scorer Ilse Tromp. The Wildcats added two more goals in the fourth quarter to secure the 3-1 victory.

Notables 

• Van Aalsum is now tied for ninth all-time at Iowa with 54 career goals.
• Goalkeeper Mia Magnotta recorded five saves.
