Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews Rutgers

Sports

September 16th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz expects running back Kamari Moulton to play in Friday night’s Big Ten opener at Rutgers. Moulton was injured in the Hawkeyes season opening win over Albany. On the down side, redshirt freshman running back Xavier Williams will miss the game after getting injured against UMass.

Moulton’s big play ability will be a plus for an Iowa offense that has struggled creating explosive plays in the first three games.

Ferentz feels the passing game is making progress but dropped passes remain an issue.

Iowa’s defense has given up only 30 points in three games but Ferentz says there have been too many missed tackles.

Iowa missed a P-A-T and had a punt blocked against UMass. Ferentz says with the start of Big Ten play those kinds of breakdowns will be costly.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says the Scarlet Knights face a big challenge on Friday night when they host Iowa in their Big Ten opener, The Scarlet Knights enter the league race with a record of 3-0. Schiano says Kirk Ferentz has developed one of the most consistent programs in the country.

With injuries at running back, receiver and left tackle, Schiano says he Iowa defense may be even tougher to solve.

Rutgers has averaged more than 46 points in three games but the challenge becomes much tougher this week.

Schiano says this would be a big win to open Big Ten play if they can get it.

Schiano says the running ability of Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski gives the Hawkeye offense an added dimension.

Friday night is a black out at Rutgers and Schiano says they need the home field to be an advantage.

Van Aalsum Earns 2nd Straight Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Honor

Sports

September 15th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa field hockey junior Dionne van Aalsum has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference office announced Monday.

This marks her sixth career Offensive Player of the Week honor, tying Barb Weinberg and Anthe Nijziel for the most offensive or defensive weekly awards by a Hawkeye.

Her 10 total weekly honors (six offensive, four freshman) are the most in Iowa field hockey history and are tied for third-most all-time among Big Ten players — trailing Northwestern’s Chelsea Armstrong (13) and Bente Baekers (11), and she is tied with Michigan’s Sam Swenson (10).

Van Aalsum scored three goals and added two assists, totaling eight points across two games as Iowa defeated No. 20 Miami (Ohio) and Louisville. She now has 14 goals on the season, tied for the most in the nation.

The Castricum, Netherlands, native leads all active Division I players with 51 career goals in 43 games. She is the only player in the top 10 with fewer than 45 games played.

Iowa (5-1) travels to Bloomington, Indiana, this weekend to face Indiana on Friday at 3 p.m. (CT) in its Big Ten opener and Sunday at 11 a.m. in a nonconference competition.

Wetjen Named B1G Special Teams Player of the Week

Sports

September 15th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior return specialist Kaden Wetjen has been named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in the Hawkeyes’ 47-7 win over UMass. The announcement was made Monday by the Big Ten Conference office.

Wetjen (5-foot-9, 196 pounds) finished with a career-high 216 return yards (182 punt and 34 kickoff) and a career-high 236 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns against the Minutemen. The 182 punt return yards are the fourth-most in a single game in Big Ten history, trailing Maryland’s William Likely (233 in 2015), Iowa’s Nile Kinnick (201 in 1939) and Iowa’s Kevonte Martin-Manley (184 in 2013).

Wetjen made history returning a punt 95 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter in the 40-point victory. The return tied a Big Ten and Iowa record (Michigan State’s Al Brenner at Illinois, 1966, and Iowa’s Bill Happel vs. Minnesota, 1984) and was the longest punt return in Kinnick Stadium history, besting Bob Longley (94 vs. Oregon in 1949). It was his second career punt return for a touchdown and his third career return touchdown (two punt, one kickoff). Wetjen is now tied for second in school history with two punt return touchdowns (with Kahlil Hill and Martin-Manley). Wetjen and Tim Dwight are the only players in school history with multiple 80+ yard punt return touchdowns (Dwight 3, Wetjen 2).

Wetjen also had a 20-yard touchdown run on a reverse in the first quarter for his first career rushing touchdown. The Williamsburg, Iowa, native is believed to be the first player in Iowa history to have a rushing, receiving, punt return and kickoff return score in his career.

Wetjen is the first Hawkeye to earn a Big Ten weekly accolade this season. Wetjen has earned Big Ten Special Teams weekly honors twice in his career (Sept. 15, 2024).

Iowa (2-1) returns to action on Friday at Rutgers (3-0). Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. (CT) in Piscataway, New Jersey. The game will be televised on FOX and broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Board of Education sets final rules for high school conference realignment

News, Sports

September 15th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The State Board of Education has updated the rules for a new law that establishes a state conference realignment committee for schools wanting to be in a activities conference. Board lawyer Thomas Mayes says the listened to public input and changed the original plan that would have selected the nine activity directors on the committee from the nine Area Education Agencies.

He says that gives the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union more flexibility in selecting the members. Mayes says they want to find a conference for every school that wants to be in a conference.

Mayes says the new committee will have much more flexibility to achieve that goal.

The rules update also includes the terms of the committee members which Mayes says was inadvertently left off in the updated rules. He says the members will serve four-year terms and are eligible for reappointment once. The executive directors of the girls’ Union and the boys’ Association will make appointments to the committee, including filling vacancies.

Each group will contain at least one representative of a nonpublic school. There will be a public hearing on the updated rules on October 21st from 8:00 a-m to 9:30 a-m in Room B-50 of the Grimes State Office Building in Des Moines.
