Iowa opens Big Ten play at Rutgers Friday night

Sports

September 18th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes open the Big Ten race Friday night at Rutgers. The Hawkeyes are 2-1 and coach Kirk Ferentz says there are plenty of challenges heading in.

In Iowa’s first road game two weeks ago at Iowa State it took the offense a quarter and a half before it put together a scoring drive. Ferentz says they will need to do a better job of adjusting if they get looks from Rutgers they were not expecting.

Las week the Hawkeyes missed a P-A-T, a field goal and had a punt blocked. Ferentz says those kinds of mistakes in Big Ten play will be tough to overcome.

Ferentz feels Iowa’s struggling pass game made progress in last week’s win over UMass.

Kickoff is 7:05pm, Iowa time. The game will be televised by FOX. You can also hear the game on KJAN!

Iowa offense prepares for Rutgers

Sports

September 18th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski feels the Hawkeye offense is taking momentum into Friday night’s Big Ten opener at Rutgers. Gronowski passed for two touchdowns, ran for another and Hawkeyes piled up 435 yards of offense in a lopsided win over UMass.

Gronowski says with the start of Big Ten play the Hawkeye offense will need to perform at a consistent level.

Redshirt freshman receiver K.J. Parker got his most extended playing time against UMass and hauled in his first touchdown pass.

While Parker has shown the ability to get open he has dropped several passes this season and is hoping to clean that up.

Upper Iowa prepares to visit No. 24 Michigan Tech

Sports

September 18th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Upper Iowa is on the road this weekend to take on a Michigan Tech team that is ranked 24th in division two. The Peacocks are 1-1 and this will close out a challenging nonconference schedule for coach Jason Hoskin’s team that saw them open with a loss at Drake.

Hoskins says a strength early has been the play of the defensive line and that unit will be counted on to contain Michigan Tech quarterback Alex Bueno, who has passed for 722 yards in a 3-0 start and also leads the Huskies in rushing.

Hoskins says Michigan Tech wants to be balanced anbd it will be about stopping the run game first.

The Peacocks will ride the passing arm of quarterback Darryl Overstreet Jr. He has passed for 580 yards and six touchdowns in two games.

Iowa works to solve special teams miscues

Sports

September 18th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa is looking to clean up special teams mistakes as the Hawkeyes get ready for Friday night’s Big Ten opener at Rutgers. Kicker Drew Stevens missed an extra point and a 38-year field goal and the Hawkeyes had a punt blocked that led to the lone UMass touchdown in a 47-7 win. With an offense that struggles to create big plays the Hawkeyes margin for error is small and special teams mistakes will prove costly in the league race. Sophomore punter Rhys Dakin.

The punt team will need to be sharp. Rutgers has blocked three punts in a 3-0 start to the season.

Dakin says there have been no changes as they get ready for Rutgers.

Stevens hit the upright on a P-A-T attempt before missing from 38-yards.

Stevens did convert from 54 yards against UMass.

Stevens on the mentality of a long field goal attempt versus a short one.

Storm Lake Prepares for Home Contest with Atlantic

Sports

September 18th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Storm Lake Tornadoes host the Atlantic Trojans Friday night as both teams are seeking to get back to even records on the year. The Tornadoes face a two-game losing streak to Thomas Jefferson and MOC-Floyd Valley. Fourth year Head Coach Drake Curry says his team is competitive and looking to become better defensively.

Storm Lake is a pass heavy team with their Senior Quarterback Cameron Boyd. Boyd has thrown for nearly 600 yards through three games with eight touchdown passes. Curry says Boyd’s athletic ability across multiple sports has really helped him lead the Tornadoes offense.

Curry emphasized the importance of playing penalty free football the best they can especially against teams they’ll go wire to wire with.

Storm Lake has a balanced defensive force with five players with ten tackles or more. The Tornadoes believe that opens the door for several players to make big plays throughout the game.

Curry says his defense is going to have to contain Atlantic’s run game if they want to win Friday night.

Kickoff is scheduled from 7 pm and you can catch all the action on KJANTV with coverage beginning at 6:30 pm.
