The Atlantic Trojans moved one-step closer to clinching a postseason berth with a dominant 46-7 win over the Greene County Rams Friday night. It was a near perfect performance for Atlantic. Outside of a single turnover and a few penalties, there was very little to critique. The run game continued to make explosive plays while the defense was not only shut down but was able to force turnovers. In a game many thoughts would be competitive, the Trojans made a statement and are now a win away from a potential postseason berth.

For all the points the Trojan offense put up, the offense was a little slow to start. The saving grace was that the Atlantic defense was able to stop the Rams. Over the Rams’ first two possessions, the Trojans turned it over on downs and forced a three and out as the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.

Although Atlantic fumbled on their second possession, the Trojans took it right back by forcing a fumble of their own. After the fumble recovery it took just four plays for Atlantic to open the scoring on an Ethan McNeal 13-yard touchdown run, and the Trojans never looked back.

By the time the clock hit zero Atlantic had put together their best performance of the season. They accumulated 453 rushing yards led by McNeal who finished with 256 yards and 4 touchdowns including one from 71 yards out. Zander Killion also continued to establish himself in the run game with a pair of touchdowns in addition to his 100+ yards. On defense, the Trojans held Greene County scoreless into well into the third quarter. Two of their three turnovers led to scores including Jake Wailes interception at the end of the first half. Even the special teams got involved as Donovan Hedrington ran back an onside kick recovery for a touchdown after Greene County’s lone touchdown. It was a complete effort as the Trojans seem to be hitting their stride at the right time. Head coach Joe Brummer was very pleased with the way his team executed, especially on defense.

In addition to the linebacker core, the secondary was very good, especially Hunter Nelson.

The win marks four in a row for the Trojans and during that stretch the offense, in particular the run, game seems to be hitting its stride at the right time.

The win also brings Atlantic to within one game of reaching the post season and will have a chance to clinch at home against rival Harlan next week.

The game next Friday will be the biggest game of the year for the Trojans. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm at the Trojan Bowl.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell to No. 12 Maryland, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.

“We have a long history with Maryland, so we knew this was going to be a battle for three or four quarters,” head coach Lisa Cellucci said. “We were a little bit slow with our timing and our execution on the penalty corners unfortunately. As for defense, Mia had a lot of great saves today in goal. We are going to get back on the horse and keep going here, because that’s the only option in front of us.”

The first half was scoreless for both teams.

The Hawkeyes struck first with an unassisted goal from Lieve van Kessel — her third of the season — at 40:35 in the third period.

Maryland responded shortly after, tying the game at the end of the third period with a goal from leading scorer Jordyn Hollamon. The Terrapins added another goal early in the fourth period to secure the 2-1 victory.

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened competition at the Michigan Invitational on Friday, posting a victory in both singles and doubles play.

In singles action, the Hawkeyes took on opponents from Michigan. Sophomore Emma Tothová recorded her first win as a Hawkeye, defeating Gabriella Lindgren in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Pia Kranholdt fell to Reese Miller, 6-0, 6-2, while Nikita Vishwase dropped a close match to Jessica Bernales, 6-3, 6-4. Eline Bex battled before falling to Laura Rahnel, 6-3, 7-6 (9). Sally Xu forced a third set against Laura Maser, but ultimately came up short, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Kranholdt and Xu teamed up for a hard-fought 7-6 (1) victory over Matilde Parriera and Sabrina Tolstova of Eastern Michigan. Vishwase and Tothová were edged by Matilde Morais and Ellie Blackford of Michigan State, 6-4.

The Hawkeyes will continue play at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday.

“Today we had some strong, competitive matches,” said Iowa assistant coach Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell. “We came up on the short end of a few matches but are continuing to make progress. It was great to see Emma get her first win as a Hawkeye and celebrate her. We are excited for another day of competing tomorrow.”

EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Iowa volleyball eyed a reverse sweep, but fell in five sets to Michigan State inside the Breslin Center on Friday night. The Hawkeyes dropped to 10-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten.

Freshman Carmel Vares led the team with 13 kills, while graduate Chard’e Vanzandt contributed 12. Vanzandt also added a team-high three aces. Redshirt freshman Hallie Steponaitis blasted a career-high 11 kills in the defeat. Senior setter Claire Ammeraal picked up her fourth double-double, racking up 43 assists and 10 digs. She also nailed eight kills.

Sophomore Aleksandra Stojanovic tallied seven kills on 14 swings and hit a team-high .429. The native of Belgrade, Serbia, added six digs. Fellow middle hitter Hannah Whittingstall converted on 7-of-18 attacks. She led the team with seven blocks. Senior libero Milana Moisio had 14 digs and recorded four assists.

Michigan State had more kills, 67-58. The Hawkeyes were out-hit, .293 to .245. The Spartans won the battle from the service line. Michigan State had eight aces and five errors. Iowa had three aces and nine errors.

Iowa visits Wisconsin under the lights in Camp Randall Stadium. A year ago, the Hawkeyes piled up 329 rushing yards in a 42-10 win over the Badgers but coach Hawkeye Kirk Ferentz does not expect a repeat of those numbers. The Wisconsin defense is giving up only 75 yards of rushing per game.

Ferentz says the Badger’s front seven is much better against the run.

Ferentz says every road game in the Big Ten is a challenge and the Hawkeyes will need a complete effort.

Iowa State looks to rebound after a loss at Cincinnati with a visit to Colorado. The Cyclones face another dual threat quarterback. Colorado’s Kaidon Salter has passed for more than 900 yards and also has five rushing touchdowns.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell who talks about Salter’s strengths.

The Cyclones have won at BYU and Utah the past two years so Campbell is not concerned with playing at altitude in Boulder.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 7 University of Iowa women’s soccer team defeated Maryland, 2-0, on Thursday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes move to 9-2-3 on the season and 4-1-2 in Big Ten Conference play.

Graduate student Kenzie Roling broke the tie in the 33^rd minute finding the goal off a loose ball. The goal marks Roling’s third of the season and her first since the, 3-0, victory over Saint Louis on Aug. 31.

Iowa outshot Maryland, 9-2, in the first 45 minutes. Despite the wide shooting margin, Iowa was only able to find the back of the net once in the first half. At the break, the Hawkeyes led Maryland, 7-0.

Graduate student Kelli McGroarty expanded the Hawkeye lead in the 74^th minute off an assist from junior Sofia Bush. McGroarty leads Iowa on the season with five goals while bush leads the team in assists with five.

Iowa would hold on to their, 2-0, lead and win the game. The Hawkeye offense was in full attack throughout the game, outshooting Maryland, 27-3. Iowa fired 11 shots on goal while allowing just one shot on goal.

Maryland goalkeeper Faith Luckey had nine saves to limit the Iowa scoring while graduate student Taylor Kane had one save to post her fifth shutout of the season.
