IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Bennett Stirtz has been named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Preseason Top 20 Watch List, the announcement was made Monday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Stirtz is the fourth Hawkeye to be named to the Cousy Award Watch List, joining Jeff Horner (2006), Mike Gesell (2016) and Jordan Bohannon (2018).

The Liberty, Missouri, native has also been named a preseason All-American by both CBS Sports (second team) and the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook (fourth team).  He is also a preseason All-Big Ten selection by Blue Ribbon, USA Today Network and in a media vote by the league office.

Stirtz, who is in his first season as a Hawkeye, was an All-American by three outlets during the 2024-25 season at Drake.  He was also tabbed as the Missouri Valley Conference Larry Bird Player of the Year and Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year.

He led the MVC in scoring (19.2), steals (2.21) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.86), while ranking second in assists (5.7).  He also led the NCAA in minutes played, averaging 39:22 per game.

Stirtz is one of four Big Ten Conference players among the 20-player list along with Purdue’s Braden Smith, the 2025 award recipient, Michigan’s Elliot Cadeau and Ohio State’s Bruce Thornton.

The Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year List will be fluid throughout the year before being narrowed to 10 players in late January with the final five finalists being announced in March.  The award winner and presentation details will be revealed at the Final Four in Indianapolis.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team took down the 13th-ranked Wolverines, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

“I think we’ve been playing good field hockey for a couple of weeks now,” head coach Lisa Cellucci said. “It was awesome to see a complete game come together. That was a gritty and resilient win from the whole group. What a fantastic win on senior day to get one for Milly and Mia in our last game at Grant Field. It was a great regional matchup that we needed for the postseason.”

Both teams went scoreless in the first half.

The Hawkeyes were able to find the back of the net in the third period on a penalty corner with a goal from Dionne van Aalsum, assisted by Rachel Herbine and Peyton Shellaway. Despite the Wolverines having a penalty corner in both the third and fourth periods, Iowa’s defense remained strong to keep Michigan scoreless.

Iowa was able to close out the game in the fourth with an empty net goal from Gia Whalen assisted by Lieve van Kessel to finalize the Hawkeye shutout.

The Hawkeyes outshot Michigan 10-to-7 and had three penalty corners on the day. Senior Mia Magnotta collected two saves on the day.

CORALVILLE, Iowa – University of Iowa volleyball notched a reverse sweep of Rutgers on Sunday afternoon inside Xtream Arena. The Hawkeyes improve to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten.

After dropping the first two sets 25-20 and 26-24, Iowa won the final three sets, 25-16, 27-25 and 15-9. It is Iowa’s second five-set victory of the season. The reverse sweep was Iowa’s first since 2022 versus Michigan.

Junior Hannah Whittingstall carried the Hawkeyes with her first double-double of the season, recording 14 kills and a career-tying 10 blocks. The native of San Antonio, Texas, hit a scorching .636 to lead the team. Alyssa Worden followed up her double-double Friday with another against Rutgers. The redshirt sophomore had 10 kills and a team-high 10 digs.

Freshman Carmel Vares smacked 12 kills and added four blocks. Graduate Chard’e Vanzandt finished with 11 kills, six blocks and an ace.

Senior setter Claire Ammeraal stuffed the stat sheet with 43 assists, nine kills, six blocks, six digs, and two aces. Ammeraal also converted on 9-of-12 swings for a .750 hitting percentage.

Although Rutgers registered more kills (62-58), Iowa held the advantage in nearly every other category. The Hawkeyes hit .323, while Rutgers hit .220. Iowa held the Scarlet Knights to a .000 hitting percentage (five kills, five errors) in the deciding fifth set. The Hawkeyes more than doubled Rutgers in blocks, 16.5-8, and set a season-high in the win.

Rutgers won the battle of aces, 10-9, but served 16 errors to Iowa’s 12. Sophomore Jaimie Marquardt notched a career-high four aces for the Hawkeyes.

The match featured 32 ties and 16 lead changes.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 15 University of Iowa women’s soccer team defeated Indiana, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hawkeyes finish the regular season at 11-3-4 overall and 6-2-3 in Big Ten Conference play.

It was a defensive battle through the first 45 minutes, as Iowa outshot Indiana, 3-2, and held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

Graduate student Kenzie Roling and junior Sofia Bush each put a shot on goal for the Hawkeyes, but the match remained scoreless at halftime.

Bush broke the tie in the 73rd minute with an assist from senior Shae Doherty, giving Iowa a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first of the season for Bush.

Junior Millie Greer extended the lead in the 85th minute, finishing a feed from sophomore Iba Oching to give Iowa a two-goal cushion in the closing minutes.

After totaling three shots in the first half, the Hawkeyes outshot Indiana, 12-3, in the second period. The Iowa defense held the Hoosiers to just five shots and one on goal for the match.

The Big Ten Tournament takes place, Oct. 30-Nov. 9. The opening round and quarterfinals will take place in West Lafayette, Ind. with the semifinals and finals being held in St. Louis, Mo. at Energizer Park. Bracket and game time information will be released later today.

The Iowa State men’s basketball team closed out exhibition play with an 80-72 win over Northwestern. Senior guard Nate Heise led the Cyclones with 19 points, including five of seven from three point range.

That’s Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger who feels the exhibition games against the Wildcats and Creighton were good tests. The Cyclones open the regular season a week from Monday night against Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are 6-2 after a 41-3 win over Minnesota. The Hawkeyes begin a bye week and return to action with a November 8th game at home against sixth ranked Oregon. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.
