Riverside Volleyball Victorious In Regional Semifinal Matchup

Sports

October 27th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Riverside Volleyball team is one step closer to a return trip to the State Tournament. The Bulldogs defeated the Missouri Valley Lady Red in straight sets to advance to Wednesday’s regional final against Aplington-Parkersburg. Riverside won set one handily 25-12 finished off by a Madison Kelley kill that lands in the middle of the Missouri Valley side of the floor. In the second set, Riverside clawed back after trailing almost the entire set and being down by as many as eight. Riverside used the energy from the second set comeback to jump out to a 12-5 start in the third set, but Missouri Valley wouldn’t go away cutting the Bulldog lead to one late. In the end, a Lilli Reed service ace secured the 38th win of the year for Riverside.

The Bulldogs and Lady Reds squared off for a third time this season, and Missouri Valley had arguably been the toughest test so far for the Bulldogs so far. In the first set, Riverside grabbed the lead and never looked back after the 3-3 tie. Sophomore Vivian Gross highlighted the set with her defense and the ability to pick up three kills early. In the middle of the first, Riverside went on a 6-0 run to take the 11-9 lead into a 16-9 lead forcing a Missouri Valley timeout. Towards the end of the set, Missouri Valley had trouble returning serves allowing Riverside to run away with the 25-12 first set victory.

A much better start for Missouri Valley in the second. Both teams exchange punches early as the set was tied 5-5 early. The duo of Khloee Stoops and Dilynn Myler led the charge giving the Lady Reds the advantage for a majority of the second set. With Riverside playing from behind, it forced Bulldog Head Coach Brooke Flathers to burn both timeouts in the set. After the second timeout, the score was 16-10 Missouri Valley. The Bulldogs were able to spark momentum after the brief timeout and storm back with a few powerful kills mixed with service aces as well. All of a sudden it was a one-point Missouri Valley lead as they used their first timeout at 20-19. The momentum didn’t shift after the break, and the Bulldogs capped off the set with a Madison Kelley kill.

Riverside used the momentum that closed out the second set to fire up a hot start in the third. The Bulldogs quickly led 3-0 and never gave up the lead despite the resilience from the Lady Reds winning the third set 25-21. The 38-0 Bulldogs were led by seven Sydney Somers kills to go with six kills from both Vivian Gross and Arabella Singleton.

Bulldog Head Coach Brooke Flathers was satisfied with the way her team competed against Missouri Valley for a third time this season.

The team never backed down despite trailing a majority of the second set.

Flathers believes the dramatic second set win carried emotion into the third.

Riverside meets Aplington-Parkersburg for a state qualifying match Wednesday night in Van Meter. You can catch all the action on KJAN with pregame at 6:50 P.M. and first serve at 7 P.M.

Whittingstall Named B1G Defensive Player of the Week

Sports

October 27th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior middle hitter Hannah Whittingstall has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

The San Antonio, Texas, native totaled 15 blocks and averaged 1.67 blocks per set across Iowa’s wins over Michigan State and Rutgers. She led the Hawkeyes in blocks in both matches, picking up five against Michigan State and 10 against Rutgers.

Whittingstall recorded the first double-double of her career with 14 kills and matched her career high with 10 blocks in Iowa’s come-from-behind victory over Rutgers on Sunday. The 10 blocks helped lead Iowa to a season-high 16.5 blocks against the Scarlet Knights. She also contributed three digs over the weekend.

Rutgers was limited to a .220 hitting percentage, including .000 in the fifth set on Sunday, due in large part to Whittingstall’s presence at the net. Whittingstall’s weekend catapulted her to second in the Big Ten with 98 blocks and an average of 1.20 blocks per set.

She also hit a blistering .636 against the Scarlet Knights, converting on 14-of-22 swings without committing an error.

This is Iowa’s first defensive player of the week honor since 2013, when Bethany Yeager was recognized. It is also Iowa’s first weekly conference award of the season and first since Malu Garcia was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 30, 2024.

Iowa (12-10, 3-7 B1G) returns to action on Friday night at Northwestern. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT) inside Welsh-Ryan Arena and will be streamed on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Northern Iowa makes a change at QB

Sports

October 27th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

UNI coach Todd Stepsis is making a change at quarterback. Jaxon Dailey will start under center this week when the Panther visit 18th ranked Illinois State. Dailey replaced Matthew Schecklman at halftime of a 31-17 loss at Southern Illinois and had a pair of touchdown passes in the second half.

Stepsis believes Dailey’s mobility in the pocket and his ability to run give the offense an added dimension.

Stepsis says Dailey’s creativity will be a plus for the offense.

The Panthers are 2-6 overall and 0-4 in Missouri Valley play and Illinois State will be the Panther’s fifth ranked opponent in a row.

While disappointed in the results, Stepsis says there is still plenty to be accomplished the final month and set the tone for the future.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  – Iowa State point guard Tamin Lipsey has been named to the Bob Cousy Award Preseason Watch List. Lipsey is among 20 point guards in the country named to the list.
Earlier this month, Lipsey was named to the 10-person All-Big 12 Preseason Team. Lipsey has missed both Iowa State exhibition games with an injury but is on track to be back for the season opener next week.
The annual Bob Cousy Award, named after the Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard, celebrates its 23rd year by highlighting the top point guard in Division I men’s college basketball.
Last season, Lipsey was a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award and a finalist for the Nolan Richardson Award, presented to the player that is the heart and soul of a winning team. Lipsey earned All-Big 12 honors for the second-straight season, being named to the third team last season. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.
Lipsey hit a pair of career milestones last year. On Feb. 22 he broke Monté Morris’ career steals record with the 226th swipe of his career. He became the 35th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points against BYU on March 4. Lipsey is one of just 26 players in men’s college basketball to play 100 games and average 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game since 1947-48. Lipsey averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 steals last year.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, October 31. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2026 Bob Cousy Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee, where the winner will be selected. The Selection Committee for the Bob Cousy Award is composed of top men’s college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2026 Cousy Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the four other members of the Men’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center).
