Iowa rally falls short at Minnesota

Sports

January 7th, 2026 by Ric Hanson

A furious rally by 19th ranked Iowa fell short in the Twin Cities. Jaylon Crocker-Johnson’s three pointer with a minute remaining gave Minnesota the lead for good in a 70-67 win. The Hawkeyes rallied from a late 14-point deficit to take a brief lead and missed a trio of three pointers in the waning seconds.

That’s Iowa coach Ben McCollum. A dreadful opening half proved costly. The Hawkeyes made only 11-of-29 shots in the first half and trailed 31-24 at the break.

Langston Reynolds led Minnesota with 22 points as the Gophers improve to 3-1 in the Big Ten.

Iowa is 2-2 in the Big Ten.

Sports

January 6th, 2026 by Christian Adams

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Eight University of Iowa football student-athletes were named College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District selections, it was announced Tuesday by the association.

The Hawkeye honorees include junior Jack Dotzler (3.78, finance), senior Gennings Dunker (3.59, human physiology), sophomore Bryce Hawthorne (3.92, elementary education), graduate Mark Gronowski (3.67, non-departmental), sophomore Zach Lutmer (3.57, exercise science), graduate Jaxon Rexroth (3.50, interdepartmental studies), junior Jayden Montgomery (3.89, enterprise leadership) and senior Jonah Pace (3.53, interdepartmental studies).

Dunker and Gronowski have earned CSC Academic All-District accolades three times, while Lutmer and Rexroth are two-time recipients of the award.

Dunker, Gronowski and Lutmer are CSC Academic All-America finalists. The trio of Hawkeyes will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on Jan. 27, 2026.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a 3.50 grade point average or higher and have one year completed in college. On the field, student-athletes must have played in 90 percent or started 66 percent of the total games played.

Nationally-ranked Iowa finished the season 9-4 overall and won the ReliaQuest Bowl.

No. 3 Iowa State men visit Baylor Wednesday night

Sports

January 6th, 2026 by Ric Hanson

The third ranked Iowa State men face their first Big 12 road test Wednesday night with a visit to Baylor. The Cyclones are 14-0 and opened conference play with a win at home over West Virginia. The Bears are 10-3 overall and opened the league race with a loss at TCU.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger, who says rebounding will be a crucial part of the game.

Otzelberger says Baylor will mix it up on defense.

It will be ISU’s second road game. The first one could not have gone better as the Cyclones crushed then top ranked Purdue 81-58 back in early December.

Northern Iowa men host Belmont Wednesday night

Sports

January 6th, 2026 by Ric Hanson

The Northern Iowa men look to stay unbeaten in the Missouri Valley Conference race on Wednesday night when they host Belmont. The challenge for the Panthers on defense will be slowing down Belmont guard Tyler Lundblade. He averages nearly 17 points per game and is shooting better than 43 percent from three point range.

That’s Panther coach Ben Jacobson who says experience has been a plus for Belmont. They are 13-3 overall and 3-2 in the Valley.

Jacobson says Lundblade’s ability to shoot from distance opens up the Belmont offense.

The Panthers are 4-0 in the Valley and 12-3 overall.

Drake men prepare for Wednesday night’s visit to Bradley

Sports

January 6th, 2026 by Ric Hanson

Drake takes a 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference record on the road to Bradley on Wednesday night. First year coach Eric Henderson says the Bulldogs are adjusting to the physical style of play it takes to compete in the Valley.

With junior forward Will Junior Exacte sidelined by a foot injury the Bulldogs lose a physical presence along the front line.

Henderson believes the Bulldogs are doing a better job of handling adversity.

After starting Valley play 3-0, Bradley has dropped two straight games to Southern Illinois and Belmont.
