Media Day at Iowa

Sports

August 9th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

It is Media Day at Iowa as the Hawkeyes enter the new season with lofty expectations. Iowa’s dreadful offense has received much of the attention heading into the season. New coordinator Tim Lester is trying to turn around a unit that only scored 20 touchdowns in a 14 game season. Kirk Ferentz is entering his 26th year as head coach and likes the potential on offense.

Ferentz says Lester’s experience was a plus in the search for a new offensive coordinator.

While there are changes on offense Ferentz says complimentary football remains the goal.

A healthy offense will help. Luke Lachey (luh-shay) returns after missing most last season with a broken ankle. He hopes to be the next in a long line of great tight ends.

Lachey says the Hawkeyes used summer workouts to get familiar with the changes on offense.

Quarterback Cade McNamara returned for summer drills. His season ended in week two of Big Ten play by a torn ACL.

The Hawkeyes open August 31st at home against Illinois State.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will play Washington State in the Quad Cities Hoops Showdown on Nov. 15 at Vibrant Arena in Moline, Illinois. It will be the Hawkeyes’ first game in the Quad Cities in 26 years.

Tickets for the event will go on sale in September. Game time and television information will be announced in the coming weeks. “We are looking forward to playing in the Quad Cities against a strong Washington State team,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. “We’re excited to be able to bring our program back to the venue for the first time in 26 years. I am thrilled for Brock and Owen to be able to play a college basketball game in their hometown.”

Sophomores Brock Harding and Owen Freeman prepped at Moline High School, leading the Maroons to a state title in 2023. Harding was the Illinois Mr. Basketball, while Freeman was an Illinois all-state selection.

The game will be Iowa’s first in Moline since 1998 – a neutral site victory over Western Illinois. It will be the program’s fourth game in the Quad Cities; Iowa faced DePaul in the National Invitation Tournament in 1995. Iowa is 3-0 all-time in Moline.

It will be the program’s second meeting against Washington State. The Hawkeyes won the previous matchup, winning 74-66 in Pullman, Washington, on Dec. 30, 1963.

Iowa State’s Stevo Klotz talks expectations

Sports

August 8th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State tight end Stevo Klotz says the Cyclones are not focused on preseason expectations. With 18 starters back from a team that finished 7-6 the Cyclones are considered by many to be a title contender in the Big 12.

Klotz began his career as a walk-on fullback and his ability to block in the run game at tight end helped him earn second team All Big 12 honors in 2023.

Klotz says the continued growth of sophomore quarterback Rocco Becht gives the offense a lot of confidence.

Iowa State opens the season at home against North Dakota on August 31st.

The Hawkeyes host Media Day Friday afternoon in Iowa City. They open August 31st at home against Illinois State.

Ernst to NCAA: Keep Men Out of Women’s Sports

Sports

August 8th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and 22 of her colleagues sent a letter urging the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) President Charlie Baker to update its student-athlete policy to ensure only biological female students can participate in women’s sports.

“Amid the Biden—Harris administration’s unprecedented assault on Title IX, we write to urge the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to update your student-athlete participation policy to require that only biologically female students participate in women’s sports. The 2024 Summer Olympics are upon us, and the NCAA has boasted about its athletes’ participation. Yet the NCAA has still taken no steps to protect a critical portion of these athletes,” said the senators.

Riley Gaines, Concerned Women for America, Heritage Action, the Independent Council on Women’s Sports, Independent Women’s Forum, the Independent Women’s Law Center, Champion Women, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and the Our Bodies, Our Sports Coalition have endorsed this letter.

Background:

Ernst supports the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which bans recipients of federal funding from operating, sponsoring, or facilitating athletic programs that permit a male to participate in a women’s sporting event.
