San Diego Transfer Mia Mack Signs With Iowa Tennis

Sports

October 23rd, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Germany native Mia Mack has signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Iowa tennis team, it was announced Thursday by head coach Sasha Boros.

The Löchgau, Germany, native will join the team in January and have two seasons of eligibility remaining in Iowa City. She spent her freshman season at Miami (Florida) in 2022-23 and her sophomore season at the University of San Diego in 2023-24.

“I’m thrilled for Mia to join our team,” said Boros. “She is a talented and highly experienced player with a wealth of experience and success. We are excited to help Mia reach her high goals on and off the court at the University of Iowa.  Mia will contribute and make a positive impact on our singles and doubles lineup immediately.”

During her sophomore campaign at USD, Mack won a combined 21 singles and doubles matches for the Toreros en route to second-team All-West Coast Conference honors in singles and honorable mention all-league honors in doubles.  She was ranked as high as No. 42 nationally in singles during the spring season.

Mack went 6-4 at No. 2 singles and 4-1 at No. 3 singles, which included a 3-3 record against nationally ranked opponents. In doubles, Mack went 11-8, which included seven wins at the No. 1 doubles line.

Mack won the USTA Intercollegiate Championships in the fall of 2023, cruising to the title.  She entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed and didn’t drop a set until the final where she downed Texas’ Vivian Ovrootsky, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4.

Prior to making the move to the West Coast, Mack was a four-time ACC Freshman of the Week honoree at Miami.  She posted a 20-10 singles record and went 15-10 in doubles, finishing second on the team in combined winning percentage (.636), singles winning percentage (.667) and spring singles winning percentage (.708).

Mack went 17-7 during the spring season, including a 15-6 mark in dual matches and a 9-4 record in ACC play.  She had a pair of singles victories over ranked foes.  A notable win came against NC State’s Chloe Henderson (6-0, 6-2), who was the eventual NCAA runner-up.

During her first fall of collegiate tennis, Mack advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in doubles.

“To me, it’s not about being in the biggest city, but more about being in a place full of the right people that makes it feel like home,” said Mack of her future home in Iowa City. “After getting to know the coaches and teammates, there was no doubt. I am excited to become a part of the Iowa family since the culture, values and personalities aligned with mine immediately. I can’t wait to represent the HAWKEYE on my shirt very soon!”

Mack had a decorated junior career, where she reached as high as No. 850 in the WTA rankings and No. 47 in the ITA rankings, both in August 2022.  She peaked at No. 375 in the ITF Juniors rankings in January 2021.

She won two ITA Juniors doubles titles in 2020, claimed an ITF Juniors singles crown in Norway in 2020, reached the finals of a $15K ITF Tournament in Tunisia in 2021 and won five German championships, including four in doubles in her career.

The Hawkeyes will return to action Nov. 6-10 at the ITA Sectional Championships in College Station, Texas.

Sioux City native Shelby Houlihan eyes 2028 Olympics

Sports

October 23rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Sioux City native and former Olympic runner Shelby Houlihan has her eye on the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The 32-year-old Houlihan finished 11th in the five thousand meter final at the Rio Olympics in 2016 but missed the Tokyo and Paris Olympics after a positive test for a banned substance in 2020. Houlihan says the substance likely came from tainted food.

She tried to prove it was from tainted pork, but the International Olympic Committee rejected that and handed down a four year ban.

Houlihan insisted she had not knowingly done anything illegal.

Houlihan spent 250-thousan dollars to try and prove her innocence and even battled through depression. She returned to the track this past season and finished fourth in the 5,000 meter run at the world championships.

Houlihan is a 13-time US champion.

Brahmer says the BYU defensive line will be a challenge.

Drake’s Joe Woodley previews Marist

Sports

October 23rd, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Drake coach Joe Woodley says quarterback Chase Spellman is questionable as the Bulldogs take a 3-0 Pioneer Football League record to Marist. Spellman has struggled with what Woodley has described as n “upper body” injury and did not play in last week’s 45-0 win over Valparaiso.

If Spellman can’t go freshman Logan Inagawa will get another start. He has appeared in five games and thrown for five touchdowns and rushed for five.

Drake’s success can be traced to a simple combination. The Bulldogs have the second best run game in the PFL and also rank second against the run.

The chore for the Drake defense on Saturday will be slowing down Marist dual threat quarterback Sonny Mannino.

Riverside Volleyball Stays Perfect, Advances to Regional Semis

Sports

October 23rd, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Riverside Bulldogs took another step towards a second straight state tournament appearance as they opened their postseason with a 3-0 win over the Underwood Eagles. The Bulldogs controlled the first two sets with 25-14 and 25-17. Although the sets were close early, Riverside went on runs to pull away, and it seemed like most of the extended rallies went the Bulldogs’ way. However, with their season on the line, Underwood gave the Bulldogs everything they had. The Eagles played with the lead for much of set three. However, Riverside proved to be too much to handle, and the Bulldogs took the lead late and didn’t relinquish it again, cementing their spot in the 2A region 7 semi-final.

Set one was arguably Riverside’s best offense performance. Leading 8-5 Riverside, went on a pair of long runs and never looked back. They dominated the latter part of the set, pulling away for an 11-point win. Lilli Reed and Sydney Somers played well, sharing the team lead with 9 kills each in the match.

Set two was much like set one, just closer for longer. Although the Bulldogs played with the lead for much of the set, Underwood did a great job of limiting Bulldog runs. However, the Riverside defense was once again phenomenal. Sophia Fenner finished with 17 digs, but her play really embodies the defensive look of the Bulldogs: Keep the play alive. There were numerous points throughout the match that the Bulldogs kept plays alive that had no business being kept alive. Although most times you end up ceeding an offensive opportunity, if you keep it alive long enough, the other team will make a mistake or an offensive opportunity will come your way. This is what proved to be a massive difference as Riverside took set two 25-17.

Set three was Underwood’s best performance of the night. With their season on the line, they gave the Bulldogs everything they had. Although they had been competitive for most of the night, they took that next step in the third set. It was the Eagles that played with the lead for much of the set. However, the patience and defensive ability of the Bulldogs prevented them from going on that set-defining run. Eventually, that patience would pay off as Riverside flipped the script late to win 25-21 and secure their spot in the regional semi-final. Head coach Brooke Flathers was pleased with how her team handled their postseason opener.

One thing that was absent from Riverside’s performance was nerves.

The defense plays such a big part of the Bulldogs’ game and Flathers credits the work the group puts in at practice.

Riverside will take on Missouri Valley in their semi-final. The Lady Reds come into the match with a record of 26-14 and a narrow win over Tri-Center in their quarterfinal Matchup. The semi-final match is scheduled for 7 pm on Monday in Oakland.
