Iowa’s offense gets ready for Minnesota

Sports

September 19th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s offense has made progress in three games but faces a big test in Saturday’s Big Ten opener at Minnesota. It’s early but after ranking at or near the bottom of the country in total offense the past few years Iowa is currently 53rd. Quarterback Cade McNamara.

The Hawkeyes have been much better this season on third down.

One part of the offense that the Hawkeyes hope to get going is tight end. Senior standout Luke Lachey only has nine catches in three games and has yet to score a touchdown.

Iowa State’s defense prepares for Arkansas State

Sports

September 19th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State defensive back Jontez Williams says the Cyclones are not focused on their role as heavy favorite entering Saturday’s game against Arkansas State. The 20th ranked Cyclones are a better than three touchdown favorite against a Red Wolves team that is 2-1 after a 28-18 loss at Michigan.

The task for the defense this week is to slow down Arkansas State dual threat quarterback Jaylen Raynor. The sophomore has passed for more than 700 yards and also has two rushing touchdowns.

It has been next man up at linebacker for the Cyclones at a position that has been hit with injuries. Sophomore Kooper Ebel  made his first start in a 20-19 win at Iowa and finished with six tackles.

Ebel says the injured players are still having an impact.

Wartburg and Central collide in American Rivers Conference showdown

Sports

September 19th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Two of the contenders collide the opening week of the American Rivers Conference football race when 13th ranked Wartburg visits Central. Wartburg is coming off its first regular season loss since 2021 with a 35-13 setback at St. Johns of Minnesota.

That’s Wartburg coach Chris Winter who says the defense will face a similar challenge against Central.

It is always a big game when these two teams meet.

Central coach Jeff McMartin says the Knights have an experienced team.

McMartin says Wartburg has the ability to change the game on special teams.

Riverside Volleyball Continues to Dominate

Sports

September 18th, 2024 by Christian Adams

The Riverside Bulldogs volleyball team is dominating the schedule with hopes at making a run at states. Through 18 games the Bulldogs are ranked number two in class 1A 17-1 with their only loss coming from a tough ACGC team. Riverside is also dominating in the statistics. Riverside players are ranked in the top five in eleven statistical categories. Head coach Brooke Flathers says their dedication and teamwork make this group special.

Defensively, Riverside ranks fifth in the Western Iowa Conference in digs and leads the conference with 101 total blocks. Individually Madison Kelley is tied for first in the conference with 24 while Lilli Reed and Bently Rone are right behind, ranking third and fourth.  Flathers says that being a solid blocking squad is a whole team effort.

As far as the offense is concerned, Riverside knows how to put points on the board. The WIC kill leaderboard features three Bulldogs led by Elly Henderson, who ranks second in Kills and first in kill efficiency. In the service department, it is no different. Ayla Richardson, Rone, and Sophia Fenner all rank in the top eight in aces, with Richarson leading the conference with 32. They have also been extremely efficient, with Fenner, Henderson, and Ashley Kelley ranked in the top 3 in service efficiency. Flathers credits not only her team’s depth but their volleyball IQ for their offensive success.

The Bulldogs have put themselves in a phenomenal spot with just over a month to go in the regular season. Flathers knows that in order to get where they want to be, they will need to continue to have that next game-up mentality.

The Bulldogs will travel to Audubon to take on the 5-7 Wheelers on Thursday with the match set for 7:30 pm.

Iowa players preview Minnesota

Sports

September 18th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Iowa linebacker Jay Higgins says the Hawkeyes don’t need to use last year’s 12-10 loss to Minnesota as motivation heading into Saturday’s game under the lights in the Twin Cities. It is the Big Ten opener for both and Floyd of Rosedale will be on the line.

Iowa center Logan Jones says it will take a complete game to get the win.

Jones says the worst part about trophy games are when the other team carries it off the field.

Jacob Gill leads the Hawkeyes with 12 catches and says the Hawkeyes face a tough challenge.

Gill says it is a big game for both teams.

Drake’s Todd Stepsis previews No. 6 South Dakota

Sports

September 18th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

After posting a shocking upset at Eastern Washington Drake is on the road this Saturday at sixth ranked South Dakota. The Bulldogs were off last week and coach Todd Stepsis says the win provided a confidence boost for his team.

Stepsis says the Bulldogs are not satisfied with that win.

It is a game featuring teams who have had games cancelled. For Drake it was the opener against Quincy and for South Dakota it was last week’s game on the road due to whooping cough at Portland State.

South Dakota’s only loss was 27-13 at Wisconsin and Stepsis says the Coyotes are really good up front.

Stepsis says they key to a game like this is keeping it close into the third quarter.

Iowa State players preview Arkansas State

Sports

September 18th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

The bye week came early for Iowa State but quarterback Rocco Becht says it was productive. The 20th ranked Cyclones are 2-0 after a 20-19 win at Iowa and return to action Saturday by hosting Iowa State. Becht says the bye came at the right time.

Becht says he used the off week to work on fundamentals.

Out of the Sun Belt Conference Arkansas State is a better than three touchdown underdog.

Arkansas State’s defense had three interceptions in a 28-18 loss at Michigan.

Becht on what they will see from the Arkansas State defense.

Cyclone offensive lineman Tyler Miller talks about the off week.

ACGC Volleyball on a Roll, Winners of Seven of last Nine.

Sports

September 17th, 2024 by Christian Adams

The ACGC Chargers Volleyball team is flying high after picking up five wins last week to push their record to 9-3 as they have won seven of their last nine matches. This included handing #2 Riverside their only loss of the season.  They were able to pull off the win in a 2-1 nail-biter, with all three sets being decided by three points or less. Head Coach Barb South praised and credited her team’s attitude for their special performance.

In the match against Riverside and throughout the first 12 games of the season, sophomore Stella Largent has been one of the Chargers’ most dynamic players. She leads the West Central Athletic Conference with 206 kills. That’s 95 more than 2nd place on the leaderboard. She is also second in service aces and fifth in Kill efficiency. South says her drive and dedication are a big reason for her success.

The Chargers are also led by their senior captain Shay Lemke. Lemke is a third-year starter at the setter position and leads the WCAC with 272 assists. She is also the conference’s top server with 32 aces. Her versatility as a setter and range help set her apart, but one can not underestimate the value of leadership when it comes to team success.

In addition to causing havoc to opposing teams, ACGC’s high-powered offense has another purpose besides improving what is already a strong service team. That is, preparing the Chargers defense. ACGC has three players, including Becca Littler and Camdyn Richter, in the top 20 in digs. South says the quality of her servers helps prepare them for what’s to come.

ACGC will be in action next Tuesday When they host the 11-6 East Sac County Raiders.
