Transfer guard Tristan Smith led the way with 16 points as the UNI men claimed a hard fought 65-58 win over South Dakota State. The Panthers improve to 2-0.

Smith joined the Panthers after playing at Concordia of Nebraska.

The 14th ranked Iowa State women raced out to a 32-14 lead at the end of one and crushed Sacred Heart 99-34 in Hilton Coliseum. Audi Crooks led the way with 21 points while reserve forward Lilly Taulelei added 10 as the Cyclones outscored Sacred Heart in the paint 52-14.

Taulelei says the tone is set for interior play ion practice.

A total of 13 players saw action as ISU improved to 3-0.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team continued competition at the ITA Sectional Championships on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

Senior Daianne Hayashida battled Zuzanna Kubacha of Baylor in singles quarterfinals, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-1.

Hayashida will return to action tomorrow, competing in the playoff 5-8 bracket. Play begins at 8 a.m.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University of Iowa volleyball challenged ninth-ranked Purdue, but fell in four sets on Saturday night inside Holloway Gymnasium. Iowa moved to 13-13 overall and 4-10 in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes dropped the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21, before winning the third, 25-17. Purdue won the fourth set, 25-18.

Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Worden led the Hawkeyes in kills for the third time this season, racking up 13. She added nine digs. Junior Hannah Whittingstall tallied 11 kills on 23 swings to lead Iowa with a .348 hitting percentage. Freshman Carmel Vares matched Whittingstall with 11 kills.

Senior Claire Ammeraal notched her eighth double-double of the season with 35 assists and 13 digs. Ammeraal had six kills. Senior libero Milana Moisio wrapped up the night with 21 digs, surpassing 20 for the third time this season. Sophomore Jaimie Marquardt recorded nine digs and contributed a team-high three aces.

The Hawkeyes had more kills (51-46), digs (65-60) and aces (8-7) than the Boilermakers. The eight aces are the team’s most since the Oct. 26 win against Rutgers.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The third-seeded University of Iowa field hockey team punched its ticket to the Big Ten Tournament championship game with a 3-1 win over seventh-seeded Ohio State on Friday night at Deborah Tobias Field.

After an early goal from Ohio State in the game’s first four minutes, it was all Hawkeyes the rest of the way.

“We played a great game of hockey tonight,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “Stuck to the game plan and executed well on our set pieces. I couldn’t be prouder that we’re moving onto the championship. The Hawks deserve this moment.”

Iowa responded with a goal from Frèderique van Cleef at the 12:23 mark, assisted by Lieve van Kessel on a penalty corner. Van Cleef then added what proved to be the game-winning goal in the second period at 20:43, again on a corner attempt, this time assisted by Dionne van Aalsum.

Van Kessel added an insurance goal late in the second period off a rebounded corner attempt.

The second half was scoreless for both teams. Iowa goalkeeper Mia Magnotta stopped a penalty stroke in the third period and finished with seven saves, including four in the second half.

Ohio State outshot Iowa, 12-8, and held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners, but the Hawkeyes converted all three of their opportunities, which proved to be the difference.

Iowa will face top-seeded and second-ranked Northwestern on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in Bloomington.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University of Iowa swimming and diving fell to Purdue, 190-109, on Friday afternoon at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The Hawkeyes collected four individual wins and five season bests during their meet with the Boilermakers.

Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Payton Flowers collected two of the Hawkeyes’ four individual wins. Flowers won the 50 free in 23.20. Her second win was in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 55.47.

Junior Olivia Swalley picked up two individual wins, claiming victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.75) and 400 individual medley (4:20.58) to add to Iowa’s team total.

We’re really proud of how we finished the meet with victories in the last couple of events, including the final relay. The 200 medley relay team of Hope Schimming, Swalley, Flowers and Audrey Olen started the meet off strong with a season-best time of 1:42.13 and finished second in the race. Junior Mallory Kell collected a season-best (2:13.33) in the 200 butterfly.

Junior Jenna Kerr and freshman Ella Jean Kelly turned in strong performances, tallying two more season bests in the 100 free. Kerr placed second with a time of 50.80 and Kelly swam a 51.58 to place fourth overall. In the 500 free, sophomore Nora Kemp earned the final season best (4:59.37) and finished second in the race.

Seniors Lainey Woodward and Geneva Pauly were Iowa’s top divers of the day. In the one-meter dive, Woodward secured bronze with 275.93 points. Pauly placed fifth overall in the three-meter dive with 293.85 points to round out the afternoon.

In doubles consolation play, Tereza Dejnozkova and Hayashida faced Tess Bucher and Alice Xu of Illinois. The Hawkeyes pushed a tiebreaker but fell, 6-2, 4-6 (10-3).

Hayashida will return to action tomorrow with singles quarterfinal play beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – University of Iowa volleyball tested 18th-ranked Indiana in a five-set loss at Wilkinson Hall on Friday night. The Hawkeyes drop to 13-12 on the season and 4-9 in Big Ten play.

The teams traded sets with Indiana winning the first (25-18) and the third sets (25-23). Iowa won sets two (25-18) and four (25-21). Indiana came out strong in the fifth to win, 15-10.

Iowa had four players in double-digit kill figures. Graduate Chard’e Vanandt was the leader for the Hawkeye offense, notching 21 kills. It was her third 20+ kill outing of the season. The Houston, Texas, native also contributed six digs and one block. Junior Hannah Whittingstall terminated 11 out of the middle and hit a team-high .429. She also had a team-high six total blocks. Freshman Carmel Vares and redshirt sophomore Alyssa Worden rounded out the front row talent with 10 kills each. Vares recorded three blocks and Worden had seven digs.

Iowa’s relentless defensive effort kept the Hawkeyes in the match with 71 total team digs, while Indiana only had 65. Senior Milana Moisio led the team with 20 digs and added two assists. Sophomore Jaimie Marquardt also recorded double-digit digs with 11 and had two service aces.

Senior Claire Ammeraal posted her eighth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 13 digs. She terminated two kills.

This was the 11th fifth-set match of the season for the Hawkeyes.
