Many people will take advantage of the Memorial Day weekend to get out their boats out for a run on Iowa’s lakes and rivers. Iowa Department of Natural Resources boating law administrator, Susan Stocker, says we’re not expected to see the high water levels we had last year. But she says you should still check on the local conditions before heading out. “What we are advising people is definitely know where you are going to go boating, and make sure you check those rivers levels. Unlike with the Missouri River where you had all of the flooding last year, or course you’re not going to find that, but you might find some hazards that are in the Missouri River now based on that, and or other areas that are low water that have revealed hazards. So know where you are boating and what the water conditions are,” Stocker says.
With warmer weather this spring, you may’ve already had the boat out this year. If not, she says now is a good time to give the boat a safety check before heading out. “Check your trailer, check your wheel bearings, your tire pressure to makes sure you are able to make it to the lake,” Stocker says. “And then of course once you get to the lake, make sure you prepare your boat in the launching area. Make sure you have all of your safety equipment, your life jackets, that is required. Be sure that you have enough life jackets for everyone who’ll be on your boat. “It can’t work if you’re not wearing it, and the Coast Guard has made some tremendous advancements in the making of life jackets, they’re lightweight, they’re more comfortable,” Stocker says. She says anyone under 12 is required to wear a life jacket while the boat is underway. You should also be sure you have plenty of sunscreen and bug repellent on the boat in case it is needed.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Beltran hit his NL-leading 14th home run and the Cardinals beat up on former St. Louis postseason star Jeff Suppan for a 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night and a three-game sweep. Rookie Lance Lynn (7-1) tied the Phillies’ Cole Hamels for the major league victory lead. David Freese snapped a 3-for-34 slump with a homer and RBI single as the Cardinals had more than enough offense minus injured starters Lance Berkman, Jon Jay and Allen Craig. Will Venable hit his sixth career leadoff home run and also doubled and singled for the Padres. San Diego was held to three or fewer runs for the seventh straight game.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa’s football and men’s basketball announcer Gary Dolphin says he’s gotten a clean bill of health after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. Dolphin told The Des Moines Register on Wednesday that’s he’s “ready to go for a great year of Hawkeye football.” He’s entering his 16th season as the play-by-play radio announcer. Dolphin was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year ago. Iowa opens the season against Northern Illinois on Sept. 1 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright was so excited after throwing a shutout for the St. Louis Cardinals, he acknowledged he got emotional. “It was a huge sense of relief,” Wainwright said. “A huge sense of feeling blessed. I’ve worked very hard to get back to where I am. “I told Jake (Westbrook) I think it might be the best feeling I’ve ever had pitching. I’ve done some things that are pretty fun but I can’t remember ever feeling that emotional after a game.” Wainwright threw a four-hitter and the Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 4-0 on Tuesday night. It was his first shutout victory since Aug. 6, 2010, and third in his career. Wainwright (3-5), who missed 2011 with elbow ligament replacement surgery, struck out nine and walked one while throwing 111 pitches. He retired the first eight batters and allowed just one runner to reach third base. Carlos Beltran had two hits and two RBIs and Matt Holliday added two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals. Edinson Volquez (2-4) gave up five hits and three runs in six innings. The former Cincinnati Red remains winless in St. Louis. He is 0-3 in four career starts at Busch Stadium with a 6.50 ERA.
In related news: St. Louis reliever Kyle McClellan said he will not need surgery on his sore right elbow. He said he hopes to begin throwing in six weeks. Cardinals Third-baseman David Freese sat out his second consecutive game. Freese is mired in a 6-for-42 slump over the last 12 games.
