Jones Tabbed Outland Trophy National Player of the Week

Sports

October 28th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa graduate student Logan Jones was honored Tuesday as the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week for games played during the weekend of Oct. 25, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Jones (6-foot-3, 302 pounds) and the Hawkeyes dominated Minnesota early and continued to pound the ball throughout its 41-3 win to maintain possession of Floyd of Rosedale. Jones anchored the middle of the offensive line that graded as the country’s best last weekend.

The two-time All-Big Ten center from Council Bluffs had the offensive line working well, and fast. The Hawkeyes (6-2, 4-1) had a 128-12 advantage in total yards in the first quarter and 186-44 by halftime. Iowa’s 31 first-half points were the most it has scored in a half since 2021.

Jones, who started his 46th career game and has served as a game captain each week this season, helped the Hawkeyes allow only one pressure against a Minnesota defense that registered nine sacks against Nebraska in its previous game.

Iowa’s offensive line earned the highest grade in the FBS by Pro Football Focus from the game, and Jones is the No. 1-rated center by the service. With Jones in the middle, all five Hawkeye offensive linemen who played at least 40 snaps earned pass blocking grades above 80 percent against Minnesota.

The Hawkeyes have outrushed their opponents in seven of the team’s eight games and have 200 or more rushing yards in four of their eight games.

Jones’ protection along with the rest of the line has helped quarterback Mark Gronowski become a rushing threat. Gronowski rushed for a touchdown against Minnesota, marking the eighth straight game with a rushing score that is a Big Ten single season record for the most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown by a quarterback. His 11 rushing scores this season tie Wilburn Hollis for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in program history.

Iowa has a proud history with the Outland Trophy with four former winners and two previous finalists. Its last finalist was the player Jones replaced as the starting center, Tyler Linderbaum in 2021. Hawkeye defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon was also a finalist in 2020. Iowa’s last Outland Trophy winner was offensive tackle Brandon Scherff in 2014.

The recipient of the 2025 Outland Trophy will be announced Dec. 12. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from finalists who are a part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award.

The Outland Trophy, celebrating 80 years since its founding, is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since. Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1890s, eventually took up practice in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.

The Hawkeyes are idle this weekend. Iowa will host nationally-ranked Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Riverside Volleyball Victorious In Regional Semifinal Matchup

Sports

October 27th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Riverside Volleyball team is one step closer to a return trip to the State Tournament. The Bulldogs defeated the Missouri Valley Lady Red in straight sets to advance to Wednesday’s regional final against Aplington-Parkersburg. Riverside won set one handily 25-12 finished off by a Madison Kelley kill that lands in the middle of the Missouri Valley side of the floor. In the second set, Riverside clawed back after trailing almost the entire set and being down by as many as eight. Riverside used the energy from the second set comeback to jump out to a 12-5 start in the third set, but Missouri Valley wouldn’t go away cutting the Bulldog lead to one late. In the end, a Lilli Reed service ace secured the 38th win of the year for Riverside.

The Bulldogs and Lady Reds squared off for a third time this season, and Missouri Valley had arguably been the toughest test so far for the Bulldogs so far. In the first set, Riverside grabbed the lead and never looked back after the 3-3 tie. Sophomore Vivian Gross highlighted the set with her defense and the ability to pick up three kills early. In the middle of the first, Riverside went on a 6-0 run to take the 11-9 lead into a 16-9 lead forcing a Missouri Valley timeout. Towards the end of the set, Missouri Valley had trouble returning serves allowing Riverside to run away with the 25-12 first set victory.

A much better start for Missouri Valley in the second. Both teams exchange punches early as the set was tied 5-5 early. The duo of Khloee Stoops and Dilynn Myler led the charge giving the Lady Reds the advantage for a majority of the second set. With Riverside playing from behind, it forced Bulldog Head Coach Brooke Flathers to burn both timeouts in the set. After the second timeout, the score was 16-10 Missouri Valley. The Bulldogs were able to spark momentum after the brief timeout and storm back with a few powerful kills mixed with service aces as well. All of a sudden it was a one-point Missouri Valley lead as they used their first timeout at 20-19. The momentum didn’t shift after the break, and the Bulldogs capped off the set with a Madison Kelley kill.

Riverside used the momentum that closed out the second set to fire up a hot start in the third. The Bulldogs quickly led 3-0 and never gave up the lead despite the resilience from the Lady Reds winning the third set 25-21. The 38-0 Bulldogs were led by seven Sydney Somers kills to go with six kills from both Vivian Gross and Arabella Singleton.

Bulldog Head Coach Brooke Flathers was satisfied with the way her team competed against Missouri Valley for a third time this season.

The team never backed down despite trailing a majority of the second set.

Flathers believes the dramatic second set win carried emotion into the third.

Riverside meets Aplington-Parkersburg for a state qualifying match Wednesday night in Van Meter. You can catch all the action on KJAN with pregame at 6:50 P.M. and first serve at 7 P.M.

Whittingstall Named B1G Defensive Player of the Week

Sports

October 27th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior middle hitter Hannah Whittingstall has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

The San Antonio, Texas, native totaled 15 blocks and averaged 1.67 blocks per set across Iowa’s wins over Michigan State and Rutgers. She led the Hawkeyes in blocks in both matches, picking up five against Michigan State and 10 against Rutgers.

Whittingstall recorded the first double-double of her career with 14 kills and matched her career high with 10 blocks in Iowa’s come-from-behind victory over Rutgers on Sunday. The 10 blocks helped lead Iowa to a season-high 16.5 blocks against the Scarlet Knights. She also contributed three digs over the weekend.

Rutgers was limited to a .220 hitting percentage, including .000 in the fifth set on Sunday, due in large part to Whittingstall’s presence at the net. Whittingstall’s weekend catapulted her to second in the Big Ten with 98 blocks and an average of 1.20 blocks per set.

She also hit a blistering .636 against the Scarlet Knights, converting on 14-of-22 swings without committing an error.

This is Iowa’s first defensive player of the week honor since 2013, when Bethany Yeager was recognized. It is also Iowa’s first weekly conference award of the season and first since Malu Garcia was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 30, 2024.

Iowa (12-10, 3-7 B1G) returns to action on Friday night at Northwestern. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT) inside Welsh-Ryan Arena and will be streamed on B1G+ and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Northern Iowa makes a change at QB

Sports

October 27th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

UNI coach Todd Stepsis is making a change at quarterback. Jaxon Dailey will start under center this week when the Panther visit 18th ranked Illinois State. Dailey replaced Matthew Schecklman at halftime of a 31-17 loss at Southern Illinois and had a pair of touchdown passes in the second half.

Stepsis believes Dailey’s mobility in the pocket and his ability to run give the offense an added dimension.

Stepsis says Dailey’s creativity will be a plus for the offense.

The Panthers are 2-6 overall and 0-4 in Missouri Valley play and Illinois State will be the Panther’s fifth ranked opponent in a row.

While disappointed in the results, Stepsis says there is still plenty to be accomplished the final month and set the tone for the future.

October 27th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa field hockey senior Milly Short has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

It is the first career weekly honor for Short and the fifth for the Hawkeyes this season.

The Worcester, England, native anchored Iowa’s defense, playing a team-high 112 minutes as the Hawkeyes shut out Michigan State and No. 13 Michigan.

Iowa’s defense held both teams to a combined 14 shots on the weekend, allowing only three shots on goal.

Short also scored on a penalty corner in Iowa’s win over Michigan State.

The Hawkeyes travel to Columbus, Ohio, to close out the regular season against Ohio State at Buckeye Varsity Field on Oct. 31 at noon (CT).
