Donation fund set up to support Iowa Lakes Community College players, their families after bus crash

News, Sports

February 20th, 2026 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A relief fund has been set up for members of the Iowa Lakes Community College Baseball team and their families. One player was killed and a dozen other players were hospitalized when a bus carrying the team and coaches crashed February 11th. Estherville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lexie Ruter says the chamber has set up an account for donations and will send the money to the college to distribute.

Ruter says it may be used to help cover families’ travel costs to get to the 12 players who were hospitalized or to attend the funeral for Carter Johnson, the 19-year-old outfielder who was killed in the crash.

Johnson’s funeral was held Wednesday in Rapid City, South Dakota. There’s a link on the Iowa Lakes Community College website to make donations.

The Iowa men take a 9-6 Big Ten record on the road to Wisconsin on Sunday. The Badgers are 10-5 in the league race and have posted several impressive wins.

McCollum says guarding the dribble will be a big part of their plan on defense.

Wisconsin has won six of the last seven games in the series and eight of the last 10 in the Kohl Center.

ATLANTA  – University of Iowa senior Bennett Stirtz has been named to the 2026 Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year Late-Season Team, the announcement was made Thursday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Stirtz, who has also been named to the Wooden Award Late Midseason Top 20 and to the Bob Cousy Point of the Year Midseason Top 10, is third in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 20.5 points to go along with 4.6 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in leading Iowa to a 19-7 overall record.

In league-only games, the Liberty, Missouri, native, is second in the conference with 23.4 points, while also averaging 3.9 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals with a .515/.389/.838 shooting clip.  He has three 30-point and 10 20-point contests in league games.

In Iowa’s win over Northwestern on Feb. 8, Stirtz had a career-best 36 points, making 12-of-20 field goals, 4-of-6 3-pointers and all eight free throws.  His 36 points were the most by a Hawkeye since Luka Garza in 2021 and they are tied the fourth-most points by a player in Carver-Hawkeye Arena history.

Stirtz, who ranks in the top seven in the Big Ten in scoring, assists and steals, is the only player in the nation with 530+ points, 120+ assists, 65 rebounds, 60 3-pointers and 35+ steals. He is looking to become the first Hawkeye in 26 years to lead the team in points, assists and steals.

Stirtz is one of 31 players on the list, which includes seven from the Big Ten Conference.

Iowa returns to action Sunday, traveling to Madison to face No. 24/25 Wisconsin at 3 p.m. (CT) from the Kohl Center.  The game will be televised on FS1.

Jefferson Named to Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Late-Season Team

Sports

February 20th, 2026 by Clayton Wollner

Feb. 19, 2026
ATLANTA, Ga.  – Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson has been named to the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year Late-Season Team. Of the 30 players, nine of them are from the Big 12 Conference, the most of any conference in the country.
Jefferson has once again been Mr. Do-It-All for the Cyclones this year. He’s averaging 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He’s the only Power Conference player in the country to average those numbers. Only six players have done so in an entire season in the country going back to 1974-75, with no one in the Big 12 having accomplished it. He turned in triple-doubles against West Virginia and UCF, becoming the first player in Big 12 history to have multiple triple-doubles against league opponents in a career, while doing so in the same season.
In the last couple of weeks, Jefferson has also been named to the Wood Award Late Midseason Top 20 and the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Top 10. In ESPN’s Top 50 Midseason Players list, he was ranked the No. 3 player in the country.
