Ammeraal, Moisio Named All-B1G Second Team

Sports

December 2nd, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa seniors Claire Ammeraal and Milana Moisio earned All-Big Ten recognition following the 2025 season, the league announced on Tuesday.

Both Hawkeyes were named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.

Ammeraal, a setter from Madison, Wisconsin, concluded her career with her best season yet. Her 1,190 assists were the second-most in the Big Ten. She had 12 double-doubles, which were good for third-most in the Big Ten. Ammeraal brought her own offensive firepower with 179 kills and 1.43 kills per set. She finished third on the team with a .317 hitting percentage. All three marks were career bests. She was the most offensive setter in the league, finishing as the only setter with more than 100 kills and with more than one kill per set on average.

In her final season, Ammeraal added two triple-doubles, including one in Iowa’s win over Northwestern. She averaged a career-best 9.52 assists per set during her senior campaign. While running Iowa’s offense, Ammeraal guided the Hawkeyes’ attack to its best hitting percentage since 2016. Iowa finished the year hitting .243.

Ammeraal was drafted with the sixth pick in the third round and 22nd overall in the 2025 MLV Draft to the Omaha Supernovas.

Moisio, a libero from Waukegan, Illinois, spent her final year of eligibility with the Hawkeyes and produced the best season of her career. Moisio started every match at libero and finished second in the Big Ten with 451 digs. She was sixth in the league with 3.52 digs per set. Both were career highs.

Moisio finished with 10+ digs in 26 matches this season and surpassed 15 digs in 14 contests. She posted her career high against Michigan, where she dug 26 attacks. Moisio went on an impressive stretch of defense in early November, recording an average of 20 digs per match against No. 18 Indiana, No. 9 Purdue, Northwestern and No. 20 Minnesota. Additionally, Moisio added 115 assists and neared a double-double with 14 digs and nine assists against No. 25 Penn State.

Moisio also earned the Big Ten’s Sportsmanship Award as Iowa’s honoree.

This is the first time since 2021 that a Hawkeye has received All-Big Ten postseason recognition when Courtney Buzzerio was named to the second team.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2025 season with a 15-17 record and were 6-14 in the Big Ten.

Atlantic Girls Basketball Falls to Top Rated St. Albert

Sports

December 2nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

In a close, hard fought game, the Atlantic Trojans fell to the St. Albert Saintes 49-45 Monday night in Atlantic. Although the Trojans fell behind early, they fought hard to keep the game in reach. At times throughout the game, but especially early on, the Trojans struggled with ball control as the press from St. Albert caused Atlantic problems. However, they were able to ride the wave and eventually found their stride. Down by four at the half, Atlantic flipped the script and played with the lead in the third quarter. Although they went into the fourth quarter tied, it felt as if the Trojans were in prime position to grab a win. However, St. Albert clamped down in the final quarter and made just one more play than the Trojans as they escaped Atlantic with a win.

The Trojans did not play their best basketball in the opening half, especially early on. However, St. Albert had a lot to do with that. Their full court press was relentless and caused all types of problems for the Trojans. The worst of which were the turnovers. Although Atlantic did have some unforced turnovers, a lot of them were due to the pressure of the Saintes. Despite the Atlantic defense playing well, the number of turnovers played a part in the Saintes controlling the game early. At times, it felt like the Trojans were hanging on by a thread, but they hung on. The Trojans did a tremendous job in the first half of dealing with adversity to keep the game well within reach. As the buzzer sounded at the end of the half, Atlantic trailed by just four.

The defense for the Trojans was solid throughout the game. For as many turnovers as St. Albert, Atlantic caused nearly as many in turn. This played into their game late in the second quarter and into the third as the Trojans eventually took the lead. The limited Avah Underwood to just three field goals while holding the rest of the lineup to under double digits. Offensive, Kirchoff had her best showing of the season. She not only led the game with 17 points, but she was an effective player in various aspects and had particular success driving the lane from the wing. Katrina Williams also had a strong showing with her second consecutive double-digit effort. Unfortunately for the Trojans, when push came to shove, they made just one too many mistakes, and St. Albert was able to take advantage where Atlantic was not. Head coach Dan Vargason was pleased with his team’s effort, especially on defense

The Trojans’ ability to handle adversity was also a positive.

Kichoff led the way on offense with 17 points and had particular success driving of the wings.

However, the Trojans will need to fix some things, including the turnovers.

The Trojans, now 1-2 will head out on the road Friday to take on Glenwood. You can catch all the action on KJANTV with coverage beginning at 5:50 pm. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.

Atlantic Boys Basketball Falls on Opening Night to North Polk

Sports

December 2nd, 2025 by Christian Adams

For the second consecutive year, the Atlantic Trojans dropped their opening game of the season to the North Polk Comets, who pulled away for a 77-51 win on Monday night in Atlantic. A quick start made a big difference for the Comets, who dominated the game early. They played well in nearly every facet on their way to a 19-6 lead after one, and had a lead as large as 21 well into the second quarter. However, the Trojans battled back. Led by Kale Jensen, the Trojans trimmed the deficit to 14 at the half and trailed by as little as 10 in the third. However, despite playing their best stretch of basketball, it was not enough to overcome the lead the Comets had built as North Polk started to pull away late in the third.

Although the Comets played a good team game, it was two guys who did much of the damage. Jayson Slings led the charge (and the game) with 24 points, 17 of which came in the first half. Tommy Spieker wasn’t far behind, picking up 17. Both Slings and Spieker hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half in what was a good shooting half for the Comets. Despite the three-point shooting drying up later in the game, the production they had in the first half helped them survive a push from the Trojans.

On the flip side, Atlantic struggled early on offense. North Polk defended the interior very well and prevented the Trojans from getting inside. Jensen was the only Trojan to knock a field goal in the opening frame. The Trojans also struggled with turnovers from time to time; however, Atlantic started to find a rhythm in the second quarter. Their best stretch of basketball was from the halfway point of the second quarter until the halfway point of the third.  Jensen started to heat up on his way to a team leading 17 points, while Sawyer Terrell and Grant Petty combined for a trio of three-pointers. The Trojans were able to take a 21 point second quarter deficit and bring it down to as little as 10. However, they could never get over the double-digit hump as North Polk eventually found the momentum again. Head coach Dalton Franken was pleased with how his team battled, but also knows there is a lot of room for improvement.

This also holds true on defense.

Now 0-1 on the season the Trojans will be back in action on Friday when they head out on the road to face Glenwood.

Bacon Named Big12 Defensive Player Of The Week

Sports

December 1st, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State linebacker Caleb Bacon has been named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after becoming the first Cyclone to record three sacks in a game since 2020.

Bacon, a Lake Mills, Iowa, native, led the Cyclone defense in the regular-season ending victory at Oklahoma State, ISU’s first in Stillwater, Oklahoma since 2018.

Bacon finished with seven tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble against the Cowboys as the ISU defense allowed just 229 yards of total offense. He was the first Cyclone since JaQuan Bailey in 2020 to record three sacks in a game.

The redshirt senior, who will return for another season in 2026 after receiving a medical redshirt for his injury shortened 2024, also had a quarterback hurry against OSU.

Iowa State concludes the season having won 10 Big 12 Player of the Week honors, while also earning Defensive Line of the Week honors twice and Offensive Line of the Week accolades once.

Riverside Girls’ Basketball Wins Nailbiter over Exira-EHK

Sports

December 1st, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Riverside Girls’ Basketball team pulled out a nail-biting win on the road at Exira-EHK Monday night in a 50-45 victory. Riverside led by two at the end of the first quarter by two but was followed up with a pressurizing full court press Exira-EHK put on causing Riverside havoc. The defensive pressure resulted in the Spartans taking the lead into the locker room. In the third quarter, Riverside was able to get the ball down low and involve the posts more in the second half. Foul trouble, cold shooting and offensive miscues gave Riverside a lead back they never lost. Riverside iced the game down the stretch with a pair of made free throws from Junior Guard Sophia Fenner gave Riverside the five-point victory.

It was a matchup that hadn’t happened in seven seasons. Both teams searching for their first wins of the season. Riverside fell short to St. Albert last week, while Exira-EHK was opening their season up. It was back and forth for 32 minutes. Both teams started out slow but began getting more comfortable as the game went on. Senior Guard Harlow Miller began the game scoring on the post just before Riverside’s Karlie Miller answered with a three. The matchup between leading scorers Kadyn Schnack and Taryn Petersen was the matchup to watch as both could shoot from well beyond the three-point line.

After the first quarter ended 8-6, Schnack hit two threes in the second and Petersen hit a triple deep from three followed up by three drives to give herself a nine-point second quarter. The full-court pressure in the second quarter really got to the Bulldogs as the two three pointers by Schnack were all the Bulldogs could get in the frame. At the half, Exira-EHK led 17-14.

Riverside exploded out of the gate in the third quarter as they came out firing from three. Schnack made two more threes while Fenner had two more as well. Riverside’s defense held Exira-EHK in check as the Spartans only had eight third quarter points. It was 32-24 Riverside after the third quarter.

In the fourth, the intensity grew and the crowd grew louder. The Bulldogs really worked hard to get the ball in the post to Junior Sydney Somers more which resulted in a massive and-one she was able to complete. Somers ended up with eleven second-half points. Sophomore Zoey Rasmussen kept the Spartans in the game with a pair of threes in the fourth, but the effort wasn’t enough for Exira-EHK as the Bulldogs pulled out the 50-45 win to improve to 1-1.

Riverside and Exira-EHK both have home games tomorrow, as Riverside hosts Missouri Valley and Exira-EHK hosts Ar-We-Va.

Riverside Boys Basketball Wins Big over Exira-EHK

Sports

December 1st, 2025 by Jack McGonigal

The Riverside Boys Basketball team beat the Exira-EHK Spartans 70-26 Monday night to win their first game of the season. The Bulldogs had three players finish in double figures and ten total players on the roster score. Riverside never trailed in the game and had the ability to turn offense into defense all night long. Exira-EHK was unable to keep up with the tempo of the Bulldogs front court and control the basketball due to the stifling Riverside defense. A 24-point lead at halftime ended in a 44 point with both team’s entire rosters entering the game.

Right from the get-go, Riverside turned steals into easy layups. Within the first minute, Junior Cole Jeppeson had two steals and finishes at the rim to give the Bulldogs the early lead. Senior Dane Martens led the scoring column with eight first quarter points which included two three pointers. Senior Guard Austin Rasmussen was consistent throughout the game for Exira-EHK, hitting one of his three three-pointers in the first quarter. The Bulldogs led 20-5 after the first.

In the second, Senior Brody Henderson got going on the offensive side knocking down a pair of threes early to begin the quarter. Martens and Jeppsen followed up with a pair of threes of their own shortly after. Only two Bulldog points in the second weren’t from beyond the arc and took a 34-10 lead into the half.

As the second half began, the ferocious defense returned for Riverside and caused trouble for Exira-EHK. Riverside just like the first quarter, fed off of the turnovers the defense was able to create and turn it into offense. Exira-EHK almost the entire night ran a zone defense, preventing the Bulldogs to get much inside resulting in many three pointers taken. Fortunately, enough, for Riverside they were hitting them. Riverside hit four third quarter threes and took a 54-19 lead into the fourth.

In the fourth, both teams emptied their benches, and the reserves played a majority of the fourth quarter. Junior Guards Peyton Amdor and Owen Fenner led the way for Riverside and Exira-EHK’s Austin Rasmussen had 13 for the Spartans in the 70-26 game.

Riverside Head Coach Nick Kroon was pleased with the start and noticed the three-point attempts increase in the second quarter.

Kroon wants to see the same level of intensity on defense night in and night out.

Tempo is the name of the game for the Bulldogs.

Riverside is back in action Tuesday night in a home game with Missouri Valley while Exira-EHK hosts Ar-We-Va.
