Riverside Girls Take Home Big Win Over East Mills

Sports

December 19th, 2024 by Christian Adams

The Riverside Bulldogs girls basketball team started Thursday night’s doubleheader with a big win over the East Mills Wolverines. The Bulldog defense was excellent and although the offense started slow, Riverside was able to adjust and cruise to a 53-24 win.

When the players took the floor to start the game, they did so not for a tipoff but for free throws. Due to East Mills failing to bring their lineup to the scorers by the appropriate time, the Wolverines started the game with a technical foul. This allowed Karlie Miller and the Bulldogs to put the first point on the board before the game even began.

With the awkward start out of the way, the game was tipoffed. However, it took a while for both teams to get going. The first quarter was slow offensively for both teams. However, a 3-pointer from Adaline Martens and a field goal from Sydney Sommers allowed Riverside to end the quarter with a slim 8-4 lead.

The biggest story of the game for Riverside was the play of their defense. They were aggressive, physical, and quick. Throughout the night, they were able to force East Mills into mistakes consistently. The Wolverines scored all 4 points in the first quarter via the charity stripe and did not make their first field goal until the halfway point of the second quarter. Riverside allowed less than 10 points in every quarter.

Meanwhile, the Bulldog offense started to heat up. Before the end of the first half, Martens would hit her second three while Sommers added four more points in the second quarter. Leading 22-10 at the half the Riverside offense would continue to push the pace. The third quarter was the Bulldogs’ most productive quarter scoring 22 points. Sophia Taylor led the second half in scoring for Riverside as they would cruise to their fifth victory of the season.

Ultimately, the Bulldogs were the better team. Sommers led the charge for Riverside, finishing the game with 12 points, while three other Bulldogs had over five points. Despite the slow start head coach Mark Jeppesen was pleased with the way his offense was able to make adjustments.

As far as the Bulldog’s stifling defense, Jeppesen says that the fruits of their labor on their new defense system are starting to show.

Riverside moves to 5-1 with the win and will be back at home on Friday when they take on Logan-Magnolia.

Riverside boys basketball wins close one against East Mills

Sports

December 19th, 2024 by Christian Adams

The Riverside Bulldogs boys basketball team had a hard fought victory Thursday night winning 52-48 in Oakland over the East Mills Wolverines. The first quarter set the tone for the high energy and gritty game as it contained four lead changes and two ties with the first quarter ending with a 12-12 score. In the second quarter the offense output slowed down for both sides as neither side could score score until minutes into the frame. Riverside was first to break the tie, thanks to Owen Fenner. Still, East Mills was able to answer with constant perimeter scoring by Mason Camden as he was able to give his team the lead at halftime going up 23-22.

In the second half is where things started to heat up for Riverside as Peyton Amdor hit two triples to spark his team in the third to ultimately give them the lead at 37-33. In the fourth quarter East Mills had a response to Amdor’s sudden offensive outpouring in Mason Camden and Jackson Embree who both could not be stopped when trying to score inside the paint. The game then came down to mere seconds left in the fourth and Riverside being only up by two, Dawson Henderson was sent to the free throw line after being fouled while grabbing an offensive rebound and he proceeded to make back to back free throw shots ultimately sealing his teams win.

The Bulldogs leading scorer with 15 points was Amdor and Fender was close behind with 11. The late game grit and 11 point performance by Henderson, did impress Riverside head coach Nick Kroon.

Coach Kroon also commented how well East Mills defense performed all four quarters.

The Wolverines were led in scoring by Mason Camden with 17 and Embree with 11. The loss puts East Mills at 3-2 on the year as they head home to face Lourdes Central Catholic on Saturday. Riversides victory puts them at 3-1 and their next contest is Friday at home against Logan-Magnolia.

No. 22 Iowa women host Northern Iowa Friday night

Sports

December 19th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

The Big Four women’s basketball series resumes on Friday night when 22nd ranked Iowa hosts UNI. The Hawkeyes are looking to sweep the instate series after wins over Drake and Iowa State. Iowa coach Jan Jensen.

Jensen says the instate games carry added emotion and she hopes they will continue.

Jensen says key for the Hawkeyes will be defending the Panther guard duo of Maya McDermott and Kayba Laube. McDermott is averaging a shade under 22 points per game and Laube ranks third in the country in three point shooting at 52 percent.

UNI is 5-5 after a 68-53 loss on the road to a South Dakota State team that is receiving votes in the AP Poll.

That’s UNI coach Tanya Warren. The Panthers shot on 37 percent in that loss and were only one of 15 from three point range.

The Hawkeyes are 9-2 after a loss to Michigan State in their Big Ten opener. It’s a 6:30p.m. tip-off in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Missouri’s Eliah Drinkwitz previews Iowa

Sports

December 19th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Missouri coach Eliah Dinkwitz says Iowa will provide a tough challenge in the Music City Bowl. The Tigers take a 9-3 record into the December 30th game in Nashville against a Hawkeye team that is 8-4.

Drinkwitz says the Hawkeyes have been a model of consistency under Kirk Ferentz.

Drinkwitz says the Hawkeyes have a veteran coaching staff.
