Hawkeyes Send 14 To Soldier Salute Quarterfinals

CORALVILLE, Iowa — Fourteen University of Iowa wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Soldier Salute on Sunday morning at Xtream Arena.

The Hawkeyes have multiple quarterfinalists at four different weight classes, including three Hawkeyes at 149 pounds. Iowa posted 14 bonus point victories during the first session, including six technical falls and two pins.

Stepehen Buchanan needed just 1:06 to dispatch Kennedy Wyatt (Bellarmine) at 195, and at heavyweight Ben Kueter pinned Thad Huff of Bellarmine, in 1:07.

Session II of the Soldier Salute will begin at 3:30 p.m. (CT). The action will be streamed live on BTN+.

No. 3 Iowa State men visit Colorado tonight (Monday night)

The third ranked Iowa State men open Big 12 play at Colorado tonight (Monday night). These teams met in Maui and the Cyclones pounded the Buffaloes 99-71.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. Colorado is 9-2 and unbeaten at home.

The Cyclones are 10-1.

Iowa men host New Hampshire Monday night

The Iowa Hawkeye men play their final non-conference game at home tonight (Monday night) against New Hampshire. The Hawkeyes are 9-3 and have been off since a December 21st win over Utah.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who is not concerned about the layoff.

No. 24 Iowa women beat Purdue

The 24th ranked Iowa Hawkeye women jumped out to a 27-13 lead at the end of one in an 84-63 win over Purdue in Iowa City.

That’s Iowa coach Jan Jensen. Addison O’Grady led the way with 12 points as 12 different Hawkeyes scored.

The Hawkeyes are 11-2 overall and visit Penn State on New Year’s Day.

Drake men beat Belmont to stay unbeaten

Drake used a 13-0 run in the opening half to take command in 65-46 win over Belmont in Des Moines. The Bulldogs held Belmont to a season low in points in moving to 12-0.

That’s Drake coach Ben McCollum. The game was played in front of Drake’s largest home crowd of the season.

Bennett Stirtz led Drake with 20 points.

Northern Iowa men beat Southern Illinois

The UNI men shot better than 55 percent and beat Southern Illinois 78-67 in the McLeod Center. The Panthers improve to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the Missouri Valley.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson who defense helped the Panthers take control.

Jacob Hutson led the Panthers with 20 points. Tytan Anderson added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Iowa plays Missouri in Music City Bowl Monday

Iowa plays Missouri Monday afternoon in the Music City Bowl in Nashville. With star running back Kaleb Johnson opting out the Hawkeyes will depend on the combination of redshirt freshman Kamari Moulton and sophomore Jaz Patterson. Moulton is second in the team in rushing with 377 yards and two touchdowns.

Moulton says the Iowa run game will be tested by the Tiger defense.

After deciding to return after last season’s Citrus Bowl loss to Tennessee Hawkeye safety Quinn Schulte prepares for his final game in an Iowa uniform.

Iowa return special Kaden Wetjen earned All American honors this season. He says Missouri has done a good job against returns.

Iowa’s defense will be tested by a Tiger offense led by quarterback Brady Cook.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz who says one of Cook’s biggest strengths is his experience.

Iowa State rallies to edge Miami in Pop Tarts Bowl

A Rocco Becht touchdown with 56 seconds remaining was the game winner as Iowa State rallied for a 42-41 win over Miami in the Pop Tarts Bowl. The Cyclones finish the season with a record of 11-3, It is the program’s first ever 11-win season.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell who says a key to the season was leadership.

With so many key players returning the expectations will be massive heading into next season.

Campbell has built a consistent winner at ISU.

Former Iowa star previews Viking-Packers

The Minnesota Vikings are still in the hunt for home field advantage in the NFC playoffs as they get set to host the rival Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Vikings Tight end and former Iowa star T.J. Hockenson.

Hockenson says the atmosphere is already playoff like.

Hockenson says the Vikings have adopted the “one game at a time” mentality of head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Iowa State plays Miami in the Pop Tarts Bowl Saturday

Iowa State will try to slow down the nation’s top offense in Saturday’s Pop Tarts Bowl in Orlando. Miami’s offense averages 528 yards per game and 44 points in posting a 10-2 regular season record. Cyclone defensive back Jontez Williams.

Williams says the Cyclones are enjoying the challenge that the Hurricanes provide.

Williams says they would love to send the seniors out with a victory.
