Atlantic Boys Fall to Split Opening two games of 2025

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by Christian Adams

After picking up a win Friday to open the New Year, the Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team fell to the Creston Panthers  54-41 on Saturday Night. The contest was one of momentum swings in which Creston capitalized on a little more than the Trojans. After a low-scoring first quarter, Creston was able to open up their lead in the second quarter. Although Atlantic grabbed momentum and was able to cut into the lead in the third, it would not be enough. Creston, led by Jake Hoyt who scored a game-high 21 points, would pull away again to claim their second victory of the season.

Offense was at a premium in the first quarter. Both sides managed just a handful of buckets for a combined 7 points in the opening four minutes. Unfortunately for the Trojans, the quarter was marked by a lengthy scoring drought. After the game’s opening field goal from Gavin McLaren, Atlantic did not score again until another McLaren bucket with 2:58 left to go in the quarter. Atlantic would hit just one more field goal in the quarter as Grant Petty hit his first of six as Creston finished the opening frame with an 11-6 lead.

The second quarter was Creston’s most complete period of the ball game. They moved the ball well and they rebounded well. Even when they didn’t get outright rebounds they made it difficult for Atlantic to clean up on the defensive glass. The Panthers also moved the ball around the Atlantic press, giving them several easy buckets around the basket. The Trojans again had difficulties finding points in part due to the Panthers’ defense as Creston would take a 28-16 lead into the locker room.

While the Panthers played some of their best basketball in the second, Atlantic played their best in the third quarter. Kinnick Juhl got the momentum started for Atlantic, completing back-to-back three-point plays. Throughout the third quarter, Atlantic was able to cause more turnovers, possess the ball more, and force Creston into some foul trouble. With some help from two three-pointers each from Petty and Hunter Nelson (including a buzzer-beater from Nelson to end the quarter), Atlantic was able to bring the deficit to seven.

Despite the momentum being with the Trojans to start the final frame, Creston grabbed it back and never relinquished it. The Panthers were able to keep Atlantic to at least a 10-point cushion until the final buzzer. The win for the Panthers moved them to a 2-5 record, while Atlantic fell to 2-6. Head coach Dalton Franken said the lack of offense and solid defense from Creston led to other mistakes from the Trojans.

One of the bright spots for Atlantic was Nelson, who finished the game with a pair of three-pointers and 8 points and Franken liked what he saw.

Petty was also crucial to the Trojans’ efforts. He finished the game with 15 points while knocking down three triples to lead Atlantic in scoring. Franken said that Petty along with Nelson kept Atlantic in the game and is proud of the work Petty continues to put in.

The Trojans will be back in action Tuesday when they visit Glenwood.

Murray State snaps Drake’s home court win streak

Sports

January 5th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Drake’s 28-game home court winning streak was snapped by Murray State. The Racers scored the final seven points of the game for a 66-59 victory. The Bulldogs had rallied from a 12 point deficit to take the lead with just over two minutes remaining. It was Drake’s second straight loss after a 12-0 start.

That’s Drake coach Ben McCollum. Murray State shot 62 percent in the second half and made the key shots down the stretch.

With starting guard Isaiah Jackson sidelined with an injury, freshman Isiah Howard stepped in and scored a season high 13 points and added six rebounds.

Atlantic Girl’s Basketball holds on to win against Creston

Sports

January 4th, 2025 by admin

The Atlantic Girls basketball team held on to win a close 51-47 game at home on Saturday afternoon against the Creston Panthers. The Trojans offensive looked smooth as they had a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to Makenna Schroeder hitting three triples and scoring 11 points. Atlantic tried to keep up the high percentage shooting in the second quarter but only managed to score seven with help from Lila Wiederstein as the Trojans would be up 30-18 going into the half.

In the second half Creston stuck to their zone defense and managed to make things interesting in the fourth quarter by going on a 14-4 run. Slicing an 18-point deficit into eight. A large part of that run was sparked by Panther Kadley Bailey who had back-to-back steals and layups. Creston continued to chip and forced the Trojans to take contested shots on the perimeter. Suddenly it was only a four-point lead for Atlantic with less than a minute to go. The Trojans next possession resulted in a heavily guarded Katrina Williams two point shot to ultimately give Atlantic a six-point buffer and the win.

Trojan head coach Dan Vargason was proud with the overall effort from Schroeder and Zoey Kirchhoff throughout the afternoon.

It was a balanced team effort for Atlantic with four players finishing in double figures. Schroeder led the Trojans with 15 points. Wiederstein added 10 points, Paytn Harter collected 10, and Williams chipped in 10. Regardless of the final score, coach Vargason acknowledged that a win is still something to be pleased with.

Atlantic improves to 6-4 on the season. Next up is a trip to Glenwood on Tuesday and it’s a game where Vargason expects his team to be fierce in finding ways to win.

The Panthers were led in scoring by Bailey with 16 points and fall to 2-7 on the year. The Panthers will stay on the road and head to Clarinda on Tuesday to take on the Cardinals.

Tri-Center Boys looking to Keep Chariot Rolling Along in the New Year

Sports

January 4th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Tri-Center Trojans boys basketball team is off to their best start in recent memory and has every intention of keeping it going in the New Year. The Trojans have rolled out of the gate to a perfect 6-0 record. In addition to their record, they sport one of the most prolific offenses in the state. Tri-Center averages 76.5 points per game which ranks fourth amongst 2A schools and has scored at least 70 points in all but one game.  Head coach Chad Harder credits his team’s success to his group’s mindset and coachability.

What makes the numbers even more incredible is the time frame in which they had to prepare.

Given the Trojan’s significant offensive production, it should come as no surprise that their leaders are producing at a high level. Tyler Baatz is currently the fourth-leading scorer in 2A averaging 23.8 points per game. He is also making his presence felt on the glass, contributing over 10 rebounds per game. Sophomore AJ Harder isn’t far behind. He sits just outside the top eight in 2A, averaging 22.5 points per game while leading the Trojans in steals and assists. Coach Harder stated their dedication to the game contributes to their success.

However, it’s not just Baatz and Harder that the Trojans rely on.

Despite all the success, coach Harder thinks the best is yet to come and that his team has room to grow.

Work ethic, self-evaluation, and a will to win are all hallmarks of successful teams and Tri-Center checks them all.
