Audubon Boys Take Down Tigers in Red Oak

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Audubon Wheelers boys basketball team showed off multiple styles of basketball as they defeated the Red Oak Tigers 68-52 on Monday night. Audubon not only kept up with the three-point shooting of the Tigers but also moved the ball well in transition and scored in the paint. Although Red Oak never backed down the Wheelers pulled away late to move to 4-3 on the season.

Coming into the game it was apparent that Red Oak would shoot the three ball frequently. However, it was Audubon that came storming out the gate with three-pointers. Mason Steckler hit three in the first quarter as a part of Audubon’s five in the first half. Although Carson Roder chipped in a pair of long balls for the Tigers, Carson Wessel chimed in with 3 field goals to help lift the Wheelers to a six-point first quarter lead. Both offensives slowed down in the second but it was the Audubon defense that held Red Oak to just seven points to end the half with a 31-21 lead.

The second half was dotted with runs by both teams. Red Oak went on two separate 8-0 runs with the latter in the final minutes of the game to bring the score to within two. However, each time the Wheelers settled in and found a response. Brody Schultes led the way for the Wheelers knocking down 4 second-half field goals in addition to several free throws to lead the game with 21 points. However, it was Audubon’s depth and ability to play in different ways that pushed them over the top. Wessel and Steckler both finished the game with 18 points as the Wheeler pulled away late for their fourth win of the season.

Head Coach Darran Miller was particularly proud of the way his team responded to the adversity Red Oak provided.

Miller was also happy with Schultes’ but also believes they are coming together as a group.

Audubon’s depth and ability to play multiple different ways was one of Miller’s biggest takeaways.

The Wheelers will look for back-to-back wins as they travel to Logan-Magnolia to take on the Panthers on Tuesday.

DINNEBIER ADDS TO COLLECTION WITH FOURTH STRAIGHT MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by admin

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake’s Katie Dinnebier did it again for the Bulldogs as she led Drake to an undefeated weekend in Des Moines, extending the Dogs’ winning streak to seven games. The senior guard averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals in the Bulldogs’ undefeated homestand.

Dinnebier started the weekend with a quiet 16-point, 9-assist, 6-rebound performance in an 86-63 defeat of UIC and followed that with 31 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals in another blowout win of Valparaiso. Her 31 points marked her fifth 30-plus scoring game of the season, and seventh of her career, marking the second-highest total number of 30-plus scoring games achieved by a player in the NCAA Women’s Division I ranks this year. Dinnebier has scored at least 30 points in three of her last four outings. The senior is one of just four MVC players to score 30-plus in five or more games in a single season since 2002-03 and is one of just four players in NCAA Division I basketball to average at least 20 points and 5.0 assists per game this season.

Dinnebier has now won four consecutive, and five total, MVC Player of the Week honors.

MVC Women’s Basketball Weekly Award Winner – Jan. 6
Player of the Week – Katie Dinnebier, Drake
Newcomer of the Week – Sarah Linthacum, Missouri State
Freshman of the Week – Doneelah Washington, Illinois State

Dinnebier and the Bulldogs will hit the road this weekend for a pair of rivalry matchups at Bradley (Jan. 10) and Illinois State (Jan. 12).

Crooks Earns Second Big 12 Weekly Award

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women’s basketball sophomore Audi Crooks has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time this season and fourth of her career. The 6-3 center became the fastest Cyclone women’s basketball player to score 1,000 career points (49 games) last week and the third fastest Big 12 player to reach the mark.

Crooks averaged 31.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting over 63 percent from the floor last week. In Iowa State’s 78-64 win over Kansas on New Year’s Day, she poured in a season-high-tying 33 points on 13-of-18 shooting (.722) from the floor. The Algona, Iowa native recorded her 400th career made field goal in the game as well. With the 23rd of her game-high 29 points against Utah, Crooks became ISU’s 35th 1,000 point scorer. She reached the mark faster than any other Cyclone women’s basketball player, as Ashley Joens held the previous best in 64 games.

Crooks and the Cyclones travel to Arizona State and Arizona this week, meeting the Sun Devils on Wednesday before making the trek to Tucson for Saturday’s contest with the Wildcats. Tip-off in Tempe is set for 7:30 p.m. while the game against Arizona is slated for 3 p.m.

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Tereza Dejnozkova has been named a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch for the 2025 spring season, it was announced Monday by the league office. During the fall season, the Czech Republic native posted 5-4 overall singles record and a 3-2 mark in doubles. She finished third at the ITA Central Regionals in October – the highest finish by a Hawkeye all-time. The finish earned Dejnozkova a spot in the ITA Sectional Championships, where she posted a 1-1 record. She was also an alternate for the NCAA Singles Championships. Dejnozkova played her first two collegiate seasons at South Alabama, where she was a second-team All-Sun Belt selection as a sophomore. She won 32 singles, and 23 doubles matches during her two seasons.

The Hawkeyes will open the 2025 season on Jan. 20, hosting Illinois State at noon (CT) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.

Iowa men host Nebraska Tuesday night

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s issues on defense need to be fixed in a hurry. After giving up an astonishing 116 points in a 31-point loss at Wisconsin the Hawkeyes host a Nebraska team on Tuesday night that is 12-2 after a win over nationally ranked UCLA.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Better defense begins at the three point line. The Badgers were 21-of-31 from behind the arc on Friday night.

The Husker trio of Brice Williams, Juwan Gary and Connor Essegian has combined to average 42 points per game.

No. 3 Iowa State men host Utah Tuesday night

Sports

January 6th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger wants his team to remain hungry as they get ready to host Utah on Tuesday night. The Cyclones are 12-1 overall and few of the games have been close. Even though it is early in the Big 12 race ISU is considered by many to be a likely Final Four team.

Otzelberger says there are still plenty of room for improvement.

Otzelberger does not feel the Cyclones have played a complete game.

Utah is 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12 after a home loss to Texas Tech.
