Atlantic basketball loses on the road in Glenwood

Sports

January 7th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team lost to Glenwood Tuesday night 77-54. Tuesday’s game was closer than the final score appeared as the Trojans kept the first quarter competitive thanks to Shelton Mualia and Kinnick Juhl’s continuous drives toward the paint. At the end of the first quarter, Atlantic found themselves down only three at 16-13. The second quarter is where Glenwood started to create separation with back to back triples from Cole Staudt. Jack Johnson also played his part in creating an 8-0 run in the second to push Glenwood to a 41-31 lead at halftime.

Atlantic continued to battle in the third quarter with Juhl and Sawyer Tarrell hitting threes trying to close the gap, but Glenwood would always respond immediately with a basket off of a slew of Trojan turnovers. The Trojans would shave the Rams lead down to eight, but never got closer in the third as turnovers continued to pile. In the fourth quarter not much changed for either side as Glenwood continued to have shots fall in from Johnson and Ayden Gibson clearing the boards. The game would end with a final score of 77-54.

Looking back on tonight’s game Atlantic head Coach Dalton Franken liked the fight he saw from his team.

Coach Franken also credited the difference and aggressiveness that Hunter Nelson made with his appearance in the starting lineup.

Nelson finished the night with 12 points, Juhl chipped in 9, and Mualia scored 7. Coach Franken explained that even though his team had the right motivation for tonight, there are still tweaks needing to be made heading into Friday’s contest against Kuemper Catholic.

Glenwood was led in scoring by Johnson with 15 and Colin Steele with 11. The victory improves the Rams record to 9-2 as the Trojans fall to 2-7.

Sports

January 7th, 2025 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State seniors Jarrod Hufford, Stevo Klotz and Myles Purchase will participate in the Hula Bowl this weekend at UCF FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game will be played Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. (CT) and televised on CBS Sports Network.

The trio made an indelible impact on the Cyclone program, playing in a combined 146 games. In 2024, the group helped Iowa State to its first double-digit win season as the Cyclones finished 11-3 and won the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Hufford, a Newark, Ohio native, started the final 47 games of his Cyclone career. In his career, Hufford made starts at four of the five positions on the offensive line (left tackle, left guard, center, right guard).

As a senior, he moved to center and started every game on one of Iowa State’s most successful teams, paving the way for an offense that rushed for 27 touchdowns, the fourth-most in program history. Hufford was twice recognized as an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection.

Klotz, a native of Chaska, Minnesota, was a vital part of the Cyclone offense while playing in the fullback role. The tight end earned All-Big 12 Second-Team honors in 2023 and 2024 at the fullback position. He played in 39 games, making 19 starts, and finished with 15 career receptions with two touchdowns.

Originally a walk-on, Klotz was put on scholarship prior to the 2023 season.

Purchase played in 51 career games and made 34 career starts in four seasons with the Cyclones. The Denver, Colorado native finished his career with 146 tackles, including 11.5 for a loss. He picked off his first career pass as a senior against Texas Tech.

Purchase had 26 career pass breakups, including seven as a senior.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Kaden Wetjen has been named the recipient of the 2024 Jet Award, which honors the most outstanding return specialist in college football. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Jet Award Foundation.
