ST. LOUIS (AP) – Pitcher Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a $22 million, three-year contract. Lynn gets $7 million this year and $7.5 million in each of the following two seasons.  He can make $500,000 in performance bonuses based on starts in 2016 and $1 million in 2017: $125,000 each for 25, 27, 29 and 31 in 2016 and $250,000 for each of those levels the following year.

Lynn made $535,000 last season, when he was 15-10 with a 2.74 ERA in 33 starts. The agreement was reached Thursday, two days after Lynn filed for arbitration.

CHICAGO (AP) — Christian Thomas scored 16 points to lead Loyola of Chicago to a 50-47 win over Drake Wednesday night. Devon Turk had 12 points and Milton Doyle finished with seven assists for the Ramblers (13-4, 3-2 Missouri Valley). Thomas finished 7-of-11 shooting and Loyola made 21 of 41 from the field (51.2 percent), as Drake shot a mere 38.3 percent from the field.

Gary Ricks Junior finished with 24 points, including seven 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (3-14, 0-5). Drake out-rebounded the Ramblers 28-24. After Jacob Enevold Jensen’s layup gave Drake the one-point advantage with 4:24 to go, Christian Thomas and Milton Doyle connected on consecutive jumpers to put the Ramblers up 48-45 at the 2:29 mark.

A jumper by Jordan Daniels about 30 seconds later cut Drake’s deficit to one, but Thomas converted a layup with 1:32 left and Loyola held on. Ricks missed a potential tying 3 with 2 seconds left.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Kenny Chery made a jumper with 4.7 seconds left and No. 22 Baylor pulled out a 74-73 win over Number 11 Iowa State after blowing a 14-point lead. Rico Gathers had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Bears (13-3, 2-2 Big 12), who had led throughout until Georges Niang made a jumper with 1:54 left in the game for a 68-67 lead.

Lester Medford hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with just over a minute left, but Iowa State (12-3, 2-1) got even on Niang’s high bank shot. Johnathan Motley had a go-ahead putback on a miss by Chery before the Cyclones went back ahead on a 3-pointer by Bryce Dejean-Jones.

Iowa State called timeout after Chery’s last basket, but Niang missed a runner as time expired. Niang scored 10 points, nine over the final 8½-minute stretch to erase Baylor’s 62-48 lead.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Bethany Doolittle scored a career-high 29 points, matched her career-high with 12 rebounds and blocked 5 shots to lead Number 22 Iowa to an 83-70 win in a Big 10 showdown. The Hawkeyes (13-3, 4-1) led 41-38 at halftime against a team only allowing 56.8 points a game and shot 51 percent for the game. Ally Disterhoft had 16 points, Melissa Dixon 13 and Whitney Jennings 10 for Iowa. Samantha Logic had 6 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Maggie Lyon and Alex Cohen had 16 points apiece for Northwestern (13-3, 3-2) with Nia Coffey adding 12 and 15 rebounds. Doolittle, who had 13 points at halftime, got Iowa off to a quick start in the second half with two quick baskets to start an 11-0 run that Coffee ended at 14:29. Doolittle made two baskets to push the lead to 64-44 at 11:27. Northwestern shot 34.7 percent in Iowa City.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz defended his program Wednesday just weeks after the Hawkeyes finished his 16th season in charge on a losing skid. Ferentz met with reporters for the first time since Iowa’s humiliating loss to Tennessee in the TaxSlayer Bowl. The Hawkeyes closed the season with three straight losses to finish 7-6. They were 4-4 in the Big Ten.

Ferentz said he intends to keep his coaching staff intact — including offensive coordinator Greg Davis and defensive coordinator Phil Parker — despite inconsistencies on both sides of the ball last season.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State rookie safety Kamari Cotton-Moya continues to wrap up postseason honors. The free safety was named to the 14th annual Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team, announced today by the FWAA.

The voters consisted of a 10-person panel of nationally-prominent writers representing each of the FBS conferences.

A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Cotton-Moya started 11 games in his freshman season, leading the team in tackles (77) and ranking third on the team in pass breakups (8). He also registered 2.0 TFL and one forced fumble.

Cotton-Moya was named the 2014 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year.
