Iowa men host Indiana Saturday

Sports

January 10th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeye men take a 2-2 Big Ten record into Saturday night’s game at home against an Indiana team that is 4-1 in the league race. This game will feature two outstanding post players. Iowa sophomore Owen Freeman is averaging nearly 17 points and more than six rebounds per game while Hoosier senior Oumar Ballo is averaging more than 14 points and nine rebounds.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says Ballo puts a lot of pressure on the defense.

The Hawkeyes look to build momentum after rallying from a 15-point second half deficit to beat Nebraska in overtime.

Jarrett Hansen Commits, Signs with Dordt Football

Sports

January 10th, 2025 by Christian Adams

Surrounded by his family, Jarrett Hansen signed his commitment papers to Dordt University for the fall of 2025. After starting the season as a receiver, Hansen ended up playing defense back due to injuries. Not only did he take a liking to it, but he also produced. Hansen accumulated 23.5 tackles and tied for the team lead with 3 interceptions. Now he will be playing defensive back on Saturdays. However, when asked what drew him to Dordt, Hansen said it was about more than athletics.

Hansen was appreciative of what Atlantic has taught and given him throughout his time in high school.

Joining him on stage were his parents Dave and Jean Hansen and his sister Lyndsey Shaw. Jean Hansen commentated on how the proud the family was for all that Jarrett had accomplished.

Much like Hansen’s decision was based on more than football, Dordt defensive backs coach Nathan Kabongo said they felt the same way about Jarrett.

Atlantic head coach Joe Brummer was also proud at what Jarrett had done for the program and stated that he was a key part of the team’s leadership this year.

While training camp for the Defenders starts next august, most freshman commits will report for a week in June. regardless of when it starts, Hansen is excited to get to work.

Hansen will enroll for the Fall of 2025.

January 10th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Thousands of Iowa athletes — from toddlers to senior citizens — will be taking part in the Winter Iowa Games, with some events starting next weekend. All ages and abilities are welcome to compete in sports including alpine ski racing, figure skating, trapshooting, hockey and snowshoeing. Games marketing director Cory Kennedy says this marks the 34th year for the annual winter sports festival, which features a range of indoor and outdoor sports.

The venues are spread across the state in almost as many locations as there are events, and several thousand Iowans will be hoping to medal.

Kennedy says it’s always a treat to see the incredible range in ages of Iowa’s athletes.

The events take place over the next few months, with the first being the pickleball tournament January 18th and 19th at the University of Dubuque. The final event is youth ice hockey at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, March 15th and 16th. Other host communities include: Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Eldora, Harlan, Iowa City, Ottumwa, Peosta and Waterloo.

Riverside Girls Big Winners Over Griswold

Sports

January 10th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Riverside Bulldogs girls basketball rode a strong effort and balanced scoring to a big 50-9 victory over the Griswold Tigers. From the start, Riverside played with good pace, moved the ball well, and had a suffocating defense. Offensively, the Bulldogs were as balanced as can be, with 12 players registering points and three picking up at least 7. Combined with a start-to-finish effort, Riverside cruised to their ninth victory of the season.

One of the highlights for Riverside was their defense. They were quick to the ball, quick to cover, and hard on the press. Throughout the game, Griswold struggled to possess the basketball as the Bulldog defense caused a host of turnovers that Riverside was able to turn into offense. The Bulldogs held Griswold scoreless in the first quarter as Riverside ended the opening frame up 14-0. In the second quarter, the three-ball started falling for Griswold. Although Sophia Taylor and Kayden Schnack both down threes in the first quarter, four of Riverside’s seven field goals in the second quarter came from beyond the arc. Elly Henderson downed two, while Taylor and Adaline Martens added one each. Well into the second frame, Abby Gohlinghorst broke through for the Tigers. However, it would be the lone field goal of the half for Griswold as Riverside went to the locker room with a 30-point lead.

The second half saw playing time for both team’s reserves. Griswold continued to fight as Addison Adams and Zoey Amos each knocked down field goal while Carsyn Adams and Gohlinghorst earned trips to the charity stripe and knocked down free throws. What stuck out the most for Riverside was their complete game effort. From tipoff to the final whistle, the Bulldogs competed. No matter the lead, they hustled back to poke balls free, disrupt plays, and cause turnovers. Although the offense slowed, they stuck to the game plan on their way to victory. In addition to the numerous players that contributed offensively, Henderson and Taylor led the way with a pair of threes and 8 points. Sydney Sommers wasn’t far behind with 7. Head coach Mark Jeppesen appreciated the balanced scoring and said it was part of the game plan.

Jeppesen was also pleased with his team’s complete effort, which is a habit he wants to continue to see.

Riverside will be back in action tomorrow at Treynor, while Griswold will head back home to face Bedford.
